Book excerpt: The Symposium and Annual Meeting of the International Society for Ceramics in Medicine, known as Bioceramics, provides a valuable forum where scientists and clinicians working in the dental and medical fields can discuss the exciting advances made in basic and applied research, and promote new technologies and applications of ceramics in medicine. These proceedings comprise 174 papers presented at the 23rd Symposium and Annual Meeting of the International Society for Ceramics in Medicine (ISCM) held on November 6-9th, 2011 in Istanbul, Turkey. In Bioceramics 23, the papers have been categorized into 21 of the most topical and essential themes of ceramics in medicine: including characterization, design and processing technologies, tissue engineering, nanotechnology, surface modification, composites, drug delivery and interdisciplinary studies. The work will thus be of great help in taking advantage of the merits of ceramics, and overcoming their weakness in various applications involving polymers and metals.

Prof. Hench has condensed his Sosman Lecture into the keynote paper of this volume. In addition, this proceedings draws together research in the different aspects of bioceramics and illustrates its unifying themes. Apatites and active bone substitute materials are well represented, with extended analyses of processing effects and variations in making these materials more functional. Included in this volume are a series of papers on interactions between ceramics and biological environments with some much needed analysis of why ceramics succeed or don't in vivo. Proceedings of a symposium to honor Larry Hench at the 105th annual meeting of The American Ceramic Society, April 27-30, 2003, in Nashville, Tennessee; Ceramic Transactions, Volume 147.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue contains the proceedings of the “Porous Ceramics: Novel Developments and Applications” and “Next Generation Bioceramics” symposia, which were held on January 24-29, 2010 at the Hilton Daytona Beach Resort and the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida, USA. The interaction between ceramic materials and living organisms is a leading area of ceramics research. Novel bioceramic materials are being developed that will provide improvements in diagnosis and treatment of medical and dental conditions. In addition, bioinspired ceramics and biomimetic ceramics have generated considerable interest in the scientific community. The “Next Generation Bioceramics” symposium addressed several leading areas related to the development and use of novel bioceramics, including advanced processing of bioceramics; biomineralization and tissue-material interactions; bioinspired and biomimetic ceramics; ceramics for drug delivery; ceramic biosensors; in vitro and in vivo characterization of bioceramics; mechanical properties of bioceramics; and nanostructured bioceramics. The “Porous Ceramics” symposium aimed to bring together engineers and scientists in the area of ceramic materials containing high volume fractions of porosity, in which the porosity ranged from nano- to millimeters. These materials have attracted significant academic and industrial attention for use in environmental applications, an area where ceramics, particularly porous ones, play a key role because of their suitable properties. Therefore, a significant number of contributions, of which some are present in this volume, was devoted to the fabrication and characterization of porous ceramics for gas purification (e.g., H2 separation and CO2 separation) as well as to particulate filtration (e.g., diesel engine soot). A leading area of ceramics research involves the development of porous ceramics for medical, dental, and biotechnology applications. For example, porous ceramics are under development for use as bone substitutes because a porous structure may enhance tissue ingrowth. Therefore, tailoring of porosity to give specific characteristics, in terms of the amount of interconnecting cells and of the cell and cell window size is required. A joint session involving participants from bioceramics and porous ceramics symposia was therefore held in order to stimulate discussion and productive interactions between the two scientific communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomaterials are produced in situ and in vivo in the body using mainly hydration reactions, that is, reactions between phosphates, silicates or aluminates, and water. The nanostructural integration of these biomaterials in the body is controlled by six mechanisms. The biomaterial interaction with body liquid results in bioactivity and total closure of the contact zone between the biomaterial and hard tissue. This book describes the new biomaterials based on nanostructural chemically bonded bioceramics and discusses their general and specific properties. It presents an overview of the nanostructural chemically bonded bioceramics, including their processing aspects, properties, integration with tissues, relation to other bioceramics and biomaterials, and nanostructural integration in different dental and orthopaedic applications. The book also describes the potential application areas for these new chemically bonded bioceramics.
