Book excerpt: With just two fingers from each hand, the healing process can begin. Bio-Touch: Healing with the Power in Our Fingertips is the story of the scientifically-proven, touch-based healing technique proven to alleviate pain, stress, the symptoms of disease, and depression. Debra Schildhouse, an initial skeptic, is drawn to Bio-Touch after feeling helpless to do anything for her daughter’s agonizing headaches from viral meningitis. Her search for a method to heal other’s physical pain gradually becomes an inner journey of personal healing as she opens her mind, expands her self-awareness, and eventually becomes a certified instructor and practitioner of Bio-Touch. In tandem with her own story, Schildhouse recounts Bio-Touch founder Paul Bucky’s story, following the many twists and turns his spiritual path takes him from childhood to adulthood and finally to the discovery of Bio-Touch. Throughout the narrative Schildhouse relates miraculous stories of healing. Touching and often funny, Bio-Touch draws together the many invisible bonds of the universe linking us all together. BIO-TOUCH is made up of seventeen sets of points, each designed to address a particular condition by encouraging the body’s natural healing abilities. It is a complimentary therapy that can be used in conjunction with mainstream medicine. Ability to pay is not a criterion for receiving sessions and it is easy to learn—no special talents or beliefs are required. Bio-Touch comes with several diagrams illustrating how to find correct “touch points” on the body.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transfers of natural mechanisms and structures into artificial, technical applications are successful approaches for innovation and become more important nowadays. The concept of Biomechatronics provides a structured framework to do so. Following these ideas, this work analyses a novel tactile sensor inspired by natural vibrissae. The sense of touch is an indispensable part of the sensory system of living beings. In, e.g., rats, the so-called vibrissal system, including long sensory hairs around the muzzle of the animals (vibrissae), is an essential part of tactile perception. Rats can determine the location, shape, and texture of an object by touching it with their vibrissae. Transferring these abilities to an artificial sensor design, the interaction between the hair/sensor shaft and different objects are analyzed. The sensor/hair shaft fulfills different functions in terms of a preprocessing of the captured signals. Therefore, by knowing and controlling these effects, the captured signals can be optimized in a way that particular information inside the captured signals is pronounced.

Still another, from thousands of miles away, regenerates the nerves of an injured spine for a patient on whom the doctors had given up. These sound like tabloid stories but could they be true? They are just three out of millions of instances in which healers have claimed to manipulate energy fields to cure the body. Books on vibrational medicine, prayer, and spiritual healing present readers with an array of historical and current discoveries and techniques. But so far nobody has addressed the reality of healing through comprehensive scientific research. The Energy Healing Experiments fills that void. Harvard- educated Dr. Gary E. Schwartz provides scientific experiments and evidence to reveal the truth about the existence of energy fields and unlocks their potential for enhancing your health.

Book excerpt: Touch is the first sense to develop in the womb, yet often it is overlooked. The Senses of Touch examines the role of touching and feeling as part of the fabric of everyday, embodied experience. How can we think about touch? Problems of touch and tactility run as a continuous thread in philosophy, psychology, medical writing and representations in art, from Ancient Greece to the present day. Picking through some of these threads, the book 'feels' its way towards writing and thinking about touch as both sensory and affective experience. Taking a broadly phenomenological framework that traces tactility from Aristotle through the Enlightenment to the present day, the book examines the role of touch across a range of experiences including aesthetics, digital design, visual impairment and touch therapies. The Senses of Touch thereby demonstrates the varieties of sensory experience, and explores the diverse range of our 'senses' of touch.

Book excerpt: Touch matters. It is fundamental to how we know ourselves and each other, and it is central to how we communicate. Digital touch is embedded in many technologies, from wearable devices and gaming hardware to tactile robots and future technologies. What would it be like if we could hug or touch digitally across distance? How might this shape our sense of connection? How might we establish trust or protect our privacy and safety? Digital Touch is a timely and original book that addresses such questions. Offering a rich account of digital touch, the book introduces the key issues and debates, as well as the design and ethical challenges raised by digital touch. Using clear, accessible examples and creative scenarios, the book shows how touch – how we touch, as well as what, whom and when we touch – is being profoundly reshaped by our use of technologies. Above all, it highlights the importance of digital touch in our daily lives and how it will impact our relationships and way of life in the future. The first work of its kind, Digital Touch is the go-to book for anyone wanting to get to grips with this crucial emerging topic, especially students and scholars of Digital Media and Communication Studies, Digital Humanities, Sensory Studies, and Science and Technology Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the vital importance of the emerging area of biotechnology and its role in defense planning and policymaking, no definitive book has been written on the topic for the defense policymaker, the military student, and the private-sector bioscientist interested in the "emerging opportunities market" of national security. This edited volume is intended to help close this gap and provide the necessary backdrop for thinking strategically about biology in defense planning and policymaking. This volume is about applications of the biological sciences, here called "biologically inspired innovations," to the military. Rather than treating biology as a series of threats to be dealt with, such innovations generally approach the biological sciences as a set of opportunities for the military to gain strategic advantage over adversaries. These opportunities range from looking at everything from genes to brains, from enhancing human performance to creating renewable energy, from sensing the environment around us to harnessing its power.
