Book excerpt: This volume presents a timely recognition, warning and mapping of the fast approaching wave, or “bio-tsunami”, of global socio-technical transformation, built by a much wider spectrum of converging powers, including biotechnology, new agriculture, novel foods, health, quality of life, environment, energy, sustainability, education, knowledge management, and design of smart applications. The book contains eight sections corresponding to different clusters of bioeconomic and socio-technical change, as identified by the editors’ “Scanning the Horizon” foresight research; it also offers an integrated view of the future bioeconomy landscape though the convergence of several technologies that affect everyday life. The clusters offer methodologies for forecasting the future bioeconomy, and how these predictions can affect target-setting and the orientation of policies and actions to manage cultural and societal change, and achieve sustainable development in less developed areas. The book will be of interest to researchers, producers, logistics experts, policy makers, regulators, business and financial institutions, and biotechnologists (e.g. geneticists, food experts, etc.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this timely new 2-volume treatise, experts from around the world have banded together to produce a first-of-its-kind synopsis of the exciting and fast moving field of plant evolutionary genomics. In Volume I of Plant Genome Diversity, an update is provided on what we have learned from plant genome sequencing projects. This is followed by more focused chapters on the various genomic “residents” of plant genomes, including transposable elements, centromeres, small RNAs, and the evolutionary dynamics of genes and non-coding sequences. Attention is drawn to advances in our understanding of plant mitochondrial and plastid genomes, as well as the significance of duplication in genic evolution and the non-independent evolution among sequences in plant genomes. Finally, Volume I provides an introduction to the vibrant new frontier of plant epigenomics, describing the current state of our knowledge and the evolutionary implications of the epigenomic landscape.

The fourth part presents the mechanisms of polyploidization and its biological consequences and significance for land plant evolution. The fifth part deals with genome size evolution and its biological significance. Together with Volume I, this comprehensive book on the plant genome is intended for students and professionals in all fields of plant science, offering as it does a convenient entry into a burgeoning literature in a fast-moving field.

Book excerpt: The aim of this compilation has been to provide a comprehensive, non-criti cal source of information concerning organometallic compounds. The scope is limited to the compounds containing at least one carbon-metal bond. The in formation includes methods of preparation, properties, chemical reactions, and applications. The First Edition comprised the literature from 1937 to 1958. The Second Edition is completely revised and extended through 1964. The literature prior to 1937 was thoroughly covered by E. Krause and A. von Grosse in I~ie Chemie der meta11-organischen Verbindungen, " Verlag von Gebrueder Borntraeger, Berlin, 1937. Our work consists of three volumes. Volume I contains derivatives of the transition metals of Groups III through VIII of the Periodic Table. Volume II contains derivatives of germanium, tin, and lead. Volume III contains derivatives of arsenic, antimony, and bismuth. The compilation is based on searches through Chemical Abstracts. The col lection of references for 1964 was completed before the Subject Indexes to Volumes 60 and 61 of the Abstracts were available; thus some omissions in the coverage of that year are possible. We have attempted to make the coverage of the literature complete in order that the compilation may have best utility to the chemist, chemical engineer, patent attorney, and editor. In the interest of brevity, certain numerical data are omitted, but references to the original literature are given. Yield data are rounded to two significant figures. Wherever possible, tables have been used. The entries in the Bibliography section include references to Chemical Abstracts.

Book excerpt: France is often held up as a bastion of gastronomic refinement and as a model of artisanal agriculture and husbandry. But French farming is not at all what it seems. Countering the standard stories of gastronomy, tourism, and leisure associated with the French countryside, Venus Bivar portrays French farmers as hard-nosed businessmen preoccupied with global trade and mass production. With a focus on both the rise of big agriculture and the organic movement, Bivar examines the tumult of postwar rural France, a place fiercely engaged with crucial national and global developments. Delving into the intersecting narratives of economic modernization, the birth of organic farming, the development of a strong agricultural protest movement, and the rise of environmentalism, Bivar reveals a movement as preoccupied with maintaining the purity of the French race as of French food. What emerges is a story of how French farming conquered the world, bringing with it a set of ideas about place and purity with a darker origin story than we might have guessed.
