Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER The first new work of fiction since 2013 from one of Canada's most successful, idiosyncratic and world-defining writers, Douglas Coupland. He's called it Binge because it's impossible to read just one. Imagine feeling 100% alive every moment of every minute of the day! Maybe that's how animals live. Or trees, even. I sometimes stare at the plastic bag tree visible from my apartment window and marvel that both it and I are equally alive and that there's no sliding scale of life. You're either alive, or you're not. Or you're dead or you're not. Thirty years after Douglas Coupland broke the fiction mould and defined a generation with Generation X, he is back with Binge, 60 stories laced with his observational profundity about the way we live and his existential worry about how we should be living: the very things that have made him such an influential and bestselling writer. Not to mention that he can also be really funny. Here the narrators vary from story to story as Doug catches what he calls "the voice of the people," inspired by the way we write about ourselves and our experiences in online forums. The characters, of course, are Doug's own: crackpots, cranks and sweetie-pies, dad dancers and perpetrators of carbecues. People in the grip of unconscionable urges; lonely people; dying people; silly people. If you love Doug's fiction, this collection is like rain on the desert.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recurrent binge episodes, marked by the consumption of a large amount of food and the experience of loss of control, are the hallmark feature of binge eating disorder (BED). A stronger desire to eat when experiencing negative affect is associated with higher levels of binge eating, and is a hypothesized pathway to BED. Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), with the goal of improving the interpersonal context in which binge eating occurs, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), with the goal of altering cognitions associated with eating, shape, and weight, have both demonstrated efficacy for the treatment of BED. These treatments result in similar outcomes, but typically half of all patients fail to improve. Investigating the relation of high and low negative affect subtypes to treatment outcome may shed additional light on our ability to predict response to treatment and lead to improved treatment planning and outcome. Through the use of cluster analysis, the subtyping of BED participants along a negative affect dimension was examined as was its relation to treatment outcome in the short- and long-term within a sample of 159 female and male patients receiving group IPT or CBT for BED. At pretreatment, participants within the high negative affect subtype experienced greater levels of eating disorder psychopathology, higher levels of emotional eating, poorer social adjustment, and more current psychopathology and personality disorders, but not weight cycling or efficacy controlling overeating across situations. High negative affect predicted a poorer overall response to treatment due to more difficulty maintaining treatment gains and a correspondingly higher risk for relapse by 1-year follow-up. Although there were no significant treatment-specific findings, results suggest that perhaps a longer or more intensive course of treatment, subsequent maintenance treatment, or alternative treatment specifically targeting high negative affect may be beneficial for this subset of BED patients. Future directions may also include designing a pretreatment screen using the negative affect dimension in order to implement the most effective course of treatment for patients with BED.

Book excerpt: At the tender age of 15, Verona van de Leur took the gymnastics world by storm to become the greatest gymnast the Netherlands had ever produced. Her remarkable talent brought her gold medals, money, and fame. Although she seemed like a young woman on top of the world, Verona's life soon spun out of control. Abused and exploited by those closest to her, when her gymnastics career came to an end, Verona suddenly lost everything that she had worked so hard to achieve. Living on the streets of Holland, the one-time world champion gymnast was homeless, penniless, living out of her car, arrested and jailed, and contemplating taking her own life. But from the depths of her despair, Verona emerged to rediscover herself and to become a successful, albeit controversial, entrepreneur. She returned to gymnastics, entered the world of adult entertainment and modeling, and went on to start successful business ventures that ultimately turned her life around. Now, for the first time, the controversial international gymnastics star, Verona van de Leur, tells her true story to the world in this no holds barred autobiography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first issue of Behaviour Research and Therapy (BRAT) appeared in 1962. This collection of outstanding articles from the journal, defining the development of behaviour therapy since the journal's launch, has been put together to celebrate thirty five years of publication. The selections cover three main areas: Theory, Methods and Treatment. Articles that were topical ten or twenty years ago but have been superseded by new collections of facts were not chosen. Hence, the many articles on the treatment of phobias were omitted, as were treatment outcome trials that are without historical interest, and ideas/methods that failed (e.g. aversion therapy). Instead, six papers on theory are included: Professor Eysenck's statement of his theory of neurosis, Clark's heavily quoted landmark paper on the cognitive theory of panic, the correspondingly important paper on OCD by Salkovskis, Teasdale on depression, Philips on a cognitive view of pain, and a model of emotional processing. From a wide range of papers on method, two stand out because of their widespread adoption (in modified forms)-Freund's plethysmographic method and Velten's mood-induction technique. On the treatment side, preference has been given to innovative techniques such as Vic Meyer's treatment of OCD, Fordyce on pain control, Azrin on habit reversal, Turk on cancer pain and new approaches to the treatment of bulimia and of bereavement.
