Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years before and after World War II, there were no bigger voices than those of the Andrews Sisters. Maxene, LaVerne, and Patty charted more top ten Billboard hits than Elvis or the Beatles and went on to become the top-selling female vocal group of all time, selling approximately 100 million records. They recorded such instant hits as "Beer Barrel Polka," "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," "Don't Fence Me In," and "I Can Dream, Can't I?" They dominated the music scene for fifteen years with some 600 recordings, appearances in seventeen films, cabaret performances, and countless radio and television appearances. Swing It! is the first published biography of this incredibly popular trio. The book includes many rarely published photos and features extensive career data, including a detailed discography, filmography, and listing of their radio and television appearances between 1938 and 1967. The Andrews Sisters had their big break with the 1937 release of the Yiddish tune "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon (Means that You're Grand)," which sold 350,000 copies in one month and established the trio as successful recording artists. The sisters are now probably best remembered for their work entertaining troops in World War II. They traveled across the U.S. and to Italy and Africa, and their recording of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" for the film Buck Privates became synonymous with the war effort. Part of the reason for the success of the Andrews Sisters was their ability to perform so many different types of music. They repeatedly achieved major hits with melodies derived from many different countries, becoming the first and most prominent artists of their time to bring ethnic-influenced music to the forefront of America's hit parade. The Andrews Sisters separated for two years in the 1950s as the strain of constantly living, working, and playing together for over four decades took its toll. They reunited in 1956 and continued to perform together until LaVerne's death from cancer in 1967. The Andrews Sisters remain the most successful and enduring female vocal group in the history of show business. Theirs are the voices that defined an era.

Book excerpt: "The best thing to happen to Bing Crosby since Bob Hope," (WSJ) Gary Giddins presents the second volume of his masterful multi-part biography. Bing Crosby dominated American popular culture in a way that few artists ever have. From the dizzy era of Prohibition through the dark days of the Second World War, he was a desperate nation's most beloved entertainer. But he was more than just a charismatic crooner: Bing Crosby redefined the very foundations of modern music, from the way it was recorded to the way it was orchestrated and performed. In this much-anticipated follow-up to the universally acclaimed first volume, NBCC Winner and preeminent cultural critic Gary Giddins now focuses on Crosby's most memorable period, the war years and the origin story of White Christmas. Set against the backdrop of a Europe on the brink of collapse, this groundbreaking work traces Crosby's skyrocketing career as he fully inhabits a new era of American entertainment and culture. While he would go on to reshape both popular music and cinema more comprehensively than any other artist, Crosby's legacy would be forever intertwined with his impact on the home front, a unifying voice for a nation at war. Over a decade in the making and drawing on hundreds of interviews and unprecedented access to numerous archives, Giddins brings Bing Crosby, his work, and his world to vivid life -- firmly reclaiming Crosby's central role in American cultural history.

Book excerpt: "The challenge for mothers of sons is to realize that because we do not share a sexual identity, that because we have not grown up in a male body, we cannot presume to understand everything there is to know about our sons' worlds." -- Patricia Stevens Between Mothers and Sons is the first anthology in which women writers attempt to answer the question that all mothers have contemplated in the course of mothering the opposite sex: "Who is this male child who came out of my body?" Or, as a pregnant Mary Gordon said when her doctor told her she was having a boy, "Oh, my God. What am I supposed to do with one of them?" From the earliest days of nursing to the good-byes of college and looming adulthood, these writers collectively explore, in a thrilling range of styles and sensibilities, the delights and frustrations, the deep and often conflicted emotions, they feel in their roles as mothers to their male children. Between Mothers and Sons resoundingly and unflinchingly celebrates this journey we are all making with our boys. with essays from: Julene Bair † Janet Burroway † Robb Forman Dew Deborah Galyan † Mary Gordon † Joy Harjo † Anne Lamott Susan Lester † Jo-Ann Mapson † Leigh McKinley Valerie Monroe † Naomi Shihab Nye † Eileen Pollack Jewell Parker Rhodes † Patricia Stevens † Sallie Tilsdale Kris Vervaecke † Patricia Williams

Book excerpt: Apart from being one of just two non-Americans in history to be honoured with Americas prestigious Golden Bandstand Award, South African broadcaster, Henry Holloways remarkable impact on American light music during his 40 years on the air, internationally, is told in this book, in words and pictures. Holloways dozens of long-running radio series on American music legends are jewels, in addition to his regular series, Swing, Sing and All That Jazz, the title of which clearly depicts Henrys penchant for that genre. His relentless pursuit to perpetuate the best from the Golden Age has prompted remarkable responses from music legends like Artie Shaw, Buddy DeFranco, Sammy Cahn, Professor Paul Tanner, Neal Hefti, Steve Allen, Bob Crosby, Les Brown, Milt Bernhart and Ray Evans, to mention but a few of many. His Golden Bandstand Award, invitations from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the Society Of Singers, the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society, setting world records with his 60 hours radio series on Les Brown in 2001 and his 115 programmes on Glenn Miller in 2004/06, lectures on luxury cruise liners, broadcasting on the BBC, being interviewed on television and by the press in the USA; these and many other highlights are encapsulated on a first-hand basis in this remarkable autobiography by a unique South African.

Book excerpt: Music & Dance ~ Life & Love ~ Body & Soul The oldest stories ever told When an enthusiastic and talented mom auditions for a dance troupe, she finds unexpected discrimination and inequality at every step. All-girl colored band clarinetist, Korla, knows the police sirens are coming for her. Can she escape the Jim Crow Sheriff in time to play the USO show before he and the young deputy figure out what else the girls are hiding? After the perfect date in jazzy WWII San Francisco, an American boy searches for his Japanese girlfriend after the government orders all Japanese-Americans to an internment camp. Perceptions are skewed by hot swing rhythms in Night Club Feet. A vintage girl pines for a married dancer while a newbie guy lusts after her, each encumbered by ego and self-image. In 1943, too many men had enlisted or been drafted, leaving empty spots in the big band orchestras. Can seventeen-year-old ingénue, Moira, pass the audition, keep her too friendly bandleader at bay, and snatch one of the coveted positions in the all-girl band. A young couple becomes sidetracked by the musicians who play hot jazz alongside the petting zoo of piglets, ducks, and lambs on the family jaunt to the feed store. Will the bereaved young woman find the perfect place her mother told her about without being diverted by a mysterious handsome man and the swing music emerging from the hotel cantina where she stopped for the night? Those are just a few Swing Shorts that explore the transformative, transcendent, and often poignant bond we share with music and dance. Find your connection.

Book excerpt: What kind of person loses sight in one eye and then through dedicated practice and honed skills becomes one of the top 50 NBA players of all time? What kind of person, with limited business experience, builds a start-up company into a thriving corporation and is recognized as one of the world’s most successful black executives? What kind of person, while running a $350 million business, takes the time to reach out to black youths lacking father figures and provides counsel and support? And what kind of person, instead of enjoying a well-deserved luxurious retirement, chooses to become mayor of a large city that many long ago had written off as dead? Dave Bing, that’s who. In Dave Bing, Detroit Free Press sports columnist Drew Sharp chronicles the compelling story of a figure whose sheer will to succeed, refusal to make excuses for setbacks, and efforts to contribute to society set him apart as an anomaly—a man of virtues so rarely found in recent history. His path from Washington D.C. to Syracuse to Detroit is sometimes tumultuous, blazed by hard work, perseverance, and savvy. Much more than the stereotypical tale of celebrity ex-jock who does good, this is a story about a black male who, even as a youngster, determined to conquer whatever challenges came his way. And now, as mayor of Detroit, Bing encounters perhaps his greatest test of all. Faced with entrenched and power-hungry political foes, a series of failed and corrupt predecessors, a work force ill prepared for today’s job market, a staggering city debt, and recent health problems, Bing would appear to have little chance of surviving his office. Both the naysayers and optimists would do well to read the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Pacific theater of World War II pitted American fighting men against two merciless enemies: the relentless Japanese army and the combined forces of monsoons, swamps, mud, privation, and disease. General Joseph Swing's rowdy paratroopers of the 11th Airborne Division--nicknamed the 'Angels'--fought in some of the war's most dramatic campaigns, from bloody skirmishes in Leyte's unforgiving rainforests to the ferocious battles on Luzon, including the hellish urban combat of Manila. The Angels were trained as elite shock troops, but high American casualties often forced them into action as ground-pounding infantrymen. Surviving on airdropped supplies and reinforcements, the Angels fought their way across nearly impassable terrain, emerging as one of the most lethal units in the Pacific War. Their final task was the occupation of Japan, where they were the first American boots on the ground. Angels Against the Sun is an unforgettable account of the liberation of the Philippines. In the tradition of Band of Brothers, historian and former paratrooper James M. Fenelon offers a grunt's-eye view of the war."-- From book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully composed journey through music history! Music history is a required course for all music students. Unfortunately, the typical music history book is dry and academic, focusing on rote memorization of important composers and works. This leads many to think that the topic is boring, but bestselling author Michael Miller proves that isn’t so. This guide makes music history interesting and fun, for both music students and older music lovers. • Covers more than Western “classical” music—also includes non-Western music and uniquely American forms such as jazz • More than just names and dates—puts musical developments in context with key historical events
