Book excerpt: Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used in solution-state and solid-state experiments on 8 asphalt cements. Using a variety of chemical and solution-state NMR spectroscopic techniques, data were obtained about the amounts of aromatic carbon in an average molecule of asphalt sample, how the carbon is arranged in terms of size of the average aromatic system and the extent of substitution. By using solid-state NMR spectroscopic techniques, the structure of asphaltic cements was probed on a small-distance scale. Difference in molecular mobility were found among the asphalts studied. Changes in molecular mobility after laboratory oxidative aging were found to be small. The implications of these data with regard to the 'micellar model' of asphalt are discussed. The research results' potential impact on understanding asphalt cement properties is explored.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The asphalt binder is an essential component of asphaltic mixtures. The performance of an asphaltic mixture is directly related to mechanical characteristics of the binder. With the development of new material characterization methods for both asphalt binder and asphaltic mixture, there is a need to re-evaluate the relationship between the properties of binders and asphaltic mixtures such that a proper understanding and selection of an asphalt binder can be made to improve the performance of an asphaltic mixture. In this study, the effects of asphalt binder properties on asphaltic mixtures at intermediate temperatures were evaluated based on recent developments on material characterization methods for both binder and asphaltic mixture. Five asphalt binders and five asphalt mixtures containing these binders with one aggregate were tested. Four of the binders were based on a modification of a base binder with different techniques. Complex shear modulus and monotonic constant shear-rate tests were conducted on asphalt binders, whereas dynamic modulus and indirect tensile strength tests were conducted on the mixtures. The effects of modification techniques on the properties of asphalt binders and the relationships between the properties of binders and asphaltic mixtures were evaluated in this study.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A standard grading system is used to evaluate the properties and expected performance of an asphalt binder. The most common grading system used in the US today is the performance grading (PG) system. This system prescribes an operational temperature range within which the binder is expected to perform satisfactorily without resulting in rutting, fatigue cracking or thermal cracking as a distress. On the low-temperature and thermal cracking end, this system uses both a metric related to stiffness and rate of relaxation (m-value) to establish a low temperature grade for a given asphalt binder. Although these parameters provide some information on the rate of relaxation and overall rigidity of the asphalt binder they don’t include an evaluation of the tensile strength of the asphalt binder. The tensile strength of the binder can furnish critical information about its resistance to cracking including thermal cracking. The asphalt industry has become particularly interested in the impact of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and additives such as rejuvenators on the behavior and performance of the material. The goal of this study was to evaluate the tensile strength characteristics of asphalt binders and composites in addition to their stiffness characteristics. The study was conducted in three parts: (1) the evaluation of tensile strength of asphalt binders with similar performance grades, (2) the evaluation of tensile strength of asphalt binders as a function of the amount of recycled asphalt binder added to the virgin binder, and (3) the influence of recycled asphalt and rejuvenators on the stiffness and tensile strength of asphalt mortars. In addition to these three objectives, this study also developed simplified methods to prepare and evaluate the tensile strength of asphalt binders and mortars as a material characterization tool to screen or evaluate the efficacy of RAP, rejuvenators, and other additives. Results show that similarly graded binders have a significant variability both in terms of their stiffness and strength and that rejuvenators can be used with RAP to achieve a balance of stiffness and strength.
