Book excerpt: "Prepare to take off on an incredible quest through the heavens." Billy Stargazer just won the Bible verse memorization contest at church for his age group, the seven-year-olds. He is ecstatic because the winners get to visit a children's hospital and then go to the fair. Billy has never been to the fair, so this is a real treat. Outside the hospital, Billy meets a clown who has just released the most beautiful balloon Billy has ever seen. The clown explains that he did so because the biggest, brightest, most beautiful balloons are granted admission into heaven, by God, for the enjoyment of children who are called to heaven before their time. Once in the hospital, Billy meets six sick children. He decides to buy balloons for them at the fair in case they are called to heaven soon. At the fair, he picks out the best balloons he can find, writes his new friends' names on them, and sends them to heaven. For Billy's act of kindness, the balloon vendor lets Billy pick out a balloon for himself. Billy wants to be an astronaut when he grows up, so he chooses a silver starship balloon. After wandering the fairgrounds, Billy boards the Galaxy Explorer, a new ride. But when the ride malfunctions and crashes, Billy must make his spiritual journey to heaven. When he arrives, he learns that he must search the infinite heavens for his beloved balloon. Billy begins his search at the heavenly petting zoo. There he meets several unique animals, like Gummy, the toothless alligator; Tiny, the gigantic flying whale; and Scales and Slick, a two-headed anaconda. But each time Billy spots his balloon, it floats just out of reach. Will Billy Stargazer's Heavenly Quest ever end?

Book excerpt: A “thrilling adventure story" (San Francisco Chronicle) that brings to life the astronomers who in the 1700s embarked upon a quest to calculate the size of the solar system, and paints a vivid portrait of the collaborations, rivalries, and volatile international politics that hindered them at every turn. • From the author of Magnificent Rebels and New York Times bestseller The Invention of Nature. On June 6, 1761, the world paused to observe a momentous occasion: the first transit of Venus between the Earth and the Sun in more than a century. Through that observation, astronomers could calculate the size of the solar system—but only if they could compile data from many different points of the globe, all recorded during the short period of the transit. Overcoming incredible odds and political strife, astronomers from Britain, France, Russia, Germany, Sweden, and the American colonies set up observatories in the remotest corners of the world, only to be thwarted by unpredictable weather and warring armies. Fortunately, transits of Venus occur in pairs; eight years later, they would have another opportunity to succeed. Thanks to these scientists, neither our conception of the universe nor the nature of scientific research would ever be the same.

Book excerpt: Caroline, known as “Lina” to her family, has always lived in the shadow of her older brother William Herschel’s accomplishments. And yet when William invites Lina to join him in England to assist in his musical and astronomical pursuits—not to mention to run his bachelor household—she accepts, finding a new sense of purpose. William may be an obsessive genius, but Lina adores him, and aids him with the same fervency as a beloved wife. When William decides to marry, however, Lina’s world collapses. As she attempts to rebuild a future, we witness the dawning of an early feminist consciousness—a woman struggling to find her own place among the stars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A transporting historical novel from the acclaimed author of Woodsburner. In late-eighteenth-century Ireland, Caroline Ainsworth learns that her life is not what it seems when her father, Arthur, an astronomer gone blind from staring at the sun, throws himself from his rooftop observatory. His vain search for an unknown planet and jealousy over astronomer William Herschel's discovery of Uranus had driven him to madness. Grief-stricken, Caroline leaves Ireland for London. But her father has left behind a cryptic atlas that holds the secret to finding a new world at the edge of the sky. As Caroline reluctantly resumes her father's work, she must confront her own longings, including her love for her father's former assistant, the tinkering blacksmith Finnegan O'Siodha. Then Ireland is swept into rebellion, and Catherine and Finnegan are plunged into its violence. A novel about the obsessions of the age--scientific inquiry, geographic discovery, political reformation, but above all, astronomy--The Blind Astronomer's Daughter encapsulates the quest for knowledge and for human connection. It is rich, far-reaching, and unforgettable.
