In der heutigen Welt ist Bilingualismus sicher keine Ausnahme, doch vor allem bei Sprechern von Weltsprachen wie Englisch ist Bilingualismus eher seltener. Schätzungsweise gibt es 6000 Sprachen auf der Welt (Crystal, 1997), doch nur 150 Länder. Laut Fishman (1967) spricht über die Hälfte der Weltbevölkerung mehr als eine Sprache, in Ländern wie Südafrika oder Indien ist Bilingualismus die Regel und Monolingualismus die Ausnahme. Hierfür gibt es ethnische und politische Gründe oder geographische Mobilität. Bevor ein näherer Blick auf Bilingualismus in der Familie geworfen wird, muss zunächst einmal geklärt werden, was unter Bilingualismus überhaupt verstanden wird. Eine feste Definition, was Zweisprachigkeit genau ist, gibt es nicht. Der amerikanische Linguist Bloomfield versteht darunter "native-like control of two languages", was soviel heißt, wie beide Sprachen so zu beherrschen, als seien sie die Muttersprache . Doch diese Definition lässt nicht zu, dass eine Sprache in manchen Bereichen stärker ist, als die andere. Der Grad der jeweiligen Sprachbeherrschung muss nicht so hoch sein, dass man beide Spra-chen gleichmäßig beherrscht, aber auch nicht so niedrig, als dass man in einer Sprache nur Dinge "verstehen" kann - passiv bilingual ist. Der Grad der Sprachbeherrschung liegt dazwischen, wichtig ist jedoch, dass man sich seiner Zweisprachigkeit bewusst ist und sich zu beiden Sprachen verbunden fühlt. So kann sich bei bilingual erzogenen Kindern ein bestimmter Sprachbereich schneller oder langsamer entwickeln, als in der anderen Sprache, da manche Bereiche in der einen Sprache komp

Case studies of six first-born children growing up with German and English were done during the children's third year of life. The input the children received was examined for parents' consistency of language choice, parents' insistence that the children use the appropriate language, parents' sensitivity towards the children's interactional and attentional needs, and parents' orientation towards the teaching of formal aspects of the linguistic system. The findings support the notion that raising one's children bilingually according to the 'one parent-one language' principle involves great efforts on the side of the minority language-speaking parent. Importantly, they indicate that these efforts must be invested in the child's education turn-by-turn.
