Mundus ́ extensive compilation accurately reflects the book ́s title. He was, indeed, a hooker. How I Got Started Shark Fishing. How a broken arm and two train wrecks kept me on the right track for a fishing career. White Shark. My mate, my customers and I fight one of the largest whites ever taken commercially by harpoon.Peter Gimbel. The first man who swam with sharks, while I rode shotgun. The time an ice-cream cone saved my life, plus other close calls. The time I hollered at Jackie Onassis for jay-walking on the island of St. Maarten. The St. Maarten Sting: Or, How I Sold the Cricket III Borrowing a storyline from the movie The Sting, I sell my other boat and outsmart a couple of Caribbean pirates. Portrait of the Artist as an Idiot. A mysterious artist (who lost the Mayor of Shelter Island ́s bust!) claims me as his muse for a watercolor of a white shark.Mundus of Arabia.A Saudi Prince hires me to pioneer shark fishing in the Red Sea. I just miss a public beheading and narrowly escape one year in jail. The 3,427-lb White Shark. Three-time Loser, Fourth-time Winner. The two happiest times in a man ́s life are when he buys a boat and sells it . . . and sells it and sells it, and hopefully sells it again, like I did!Getting to the Heart of Things.I remarry, burn my snow shoes and retire to Hawaii, where I plant pineapples and fruit trees, adopt a orphaned 350 lb. wild boar, and survive open-heart surgery, aneurysm repair and prostate cancer. My South African Shark Safari. In which I travel to South Africa with the Discovery Channel and hook up with white sharks once more-this time through the lens of a camera.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Saban, 4th and Goal, and Sowbelly comes the thrilling, untold story of the quest for the world record tarpon on a fly rod—a tale that reveals as much about Man as it does about the fish. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, something unique happened in the quiet little town on the west coast of Florida known as Homosassa. The best fly anglers in the world—Lefty Kreh, Stu Apte, Ted Williams, Tom Evans, Billy Pate and others—all gathered together to chase the same Holy Grail: The world record for the world’s most glamorous and sought-after fly rod species, the tarpon. The anglers would meet each morning for breakfast. They would compete out on the water during the day, eat dinner together at night, socialize and party. Some harder than others. The world record fell nearly every year. But records weren’t the only things that were broken. Hooks, lines, rods, reels, hearts and marriages didn’t survive, either. The egos involved made the atmosphere electric. The difficulty of the quest made it legitimate. The drugs and romantic entaglements that were swept in with the tide would finally make it all veer out of control. It was a confluence of people and place that had never happened before in the world of fishing and will never happen again. It was a collision of the top anglers and the top species of fish which would lead to smashed lives for nearly all involved, man and fish alike. In Lords of the Fly, Burke, an obsessed tarpon fly angler himself, delves into this incredible moment. He examines the growing popularity of the tarpon, an amazing fish has been around for 50 million years, can live to 80 years old and can grow to 300 pounds in weight. It is a massive, leaping, bullet train of a fish. When hooked in shallow water, it produces “immediate unreality,” as the late poet and tarpon obsessive, Richard Brautigan, once described it. Burke also chronicles the heartbreaking destruction that exists as a result—brought on by greed, environmental degradation and the shenanigans of a notorious Miami gangster—and how all of it has shaped our contemporary fishery. Filled with larger-than-life characters and vivid prose, Lords of the Fly is not only a must read for anglers of all stripes, but also for those interested in the desperate yearning of the human condition.

This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims at synthesizing our current knowledge of Acipenser sturio and its management. This species, one of the most widespread sturgeon species all over Western Europe ranging from the Black Sea to the Baltic, is now on the verge of extinction. Major aspects of its biology and management, including mismanagement, are provided in a historic perspective. Similarly, the changes in the restoration programs (in situ and ex situ) initiated in France and Germany are presented. As the species occurred in sympatry with Acipenser oxyrinchus in Germany and Poland and very recently in France as well, a brief outlook on restoration-management programs of A. oxyrinchus are also provided for both North America and Northern European countries, namely Germany and Poland. As conservation-restoration actions go beyond scientific issues, non-governmental stakeholders and marine professional fishermen’s organizations have also been asked to contribute, and the key role of a French-German cooperation plan is underlined. A part of the book is devoted to perspectives. Illustrations of the European sturgeon, mainly in photographs, but also in stamps and paintings, are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All right all you fisher-persons. I hear that most of you have read my first booklet and think that you know as much as me. But you are wrong. I have learned a lot since I did my first booklet. I've been to Seattle, Port Angeles, Neah Bay, Sekiu, Ucluelet, Tofino, Barkley Sound, Alberni, Nanaimo, Campbell River, as well as lots of little spots along the way. I even went to Fanny Bay. I am now eleven and I learned a lot in my travels. Also, my Dad invented a lot of new lures. My biggest fish last year was a 41.5 pound (19kg) Spring Salmon. This new book includes some of the details from my first booklet but I've added more big fish lures and stories. Besides my Dad's lures, it covers Tomic Plugs, Hot Spots, Riptide lures, Reef Raider lures and Buzz Bomb lures. I've also put in a small section on motor mooching strip and cut plug. I hope that by reading this book you will be catching lots of big fish like I do. The hardest fish to catch is the salmon so most of the book will deal with salmon fishing. Once you know all about catching salmon in salt water you can use this information to catch all types of large fish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join Zeb Hogan, host of the National Geographic television show Monster Fish, on the science adventure of a lifetime. On May 1, 2005, a Thai fisherman caught a truly monstrous Mekong giant catfish. At 646 pounds, it captured the world’s attention, and with awe and wonder, it was deemed the largest freshwater fish on record. There was no denying its size, but when biologist and research associate professor Hogan saw a photo of the fish, he wondered if it really was the biggest in the world. To his surprise, no one had systematically sought to answer the question: Which of the giant freshwater species really was the largest? Seeking to answer that question has brought Hogan face to face with massive arapaima and piranha in the Amazon, alligator gar in Texas, pigeon-eating wels catfish in France, stingrays in Cambodia, and the gnarled-toothed sawfish in Australia. Part of his scientific adventure has been captured on Monster Fish, and Hogan now tells the full story of his 25-year quest to understand the mysteries of some of the oldest, largest, most bizarre creatures on Earth. The fate of these giant fish motivates Hogan to understand the various species he studies. The megafish’s numbers are dwindling, and the majority of them face extinction. In this book, he teams up with award-winning journalist Stefan Lovgren to tell, for the first time, the remarkable and troubling story of the world’s largest freshwater fish. It is a story that stretches across the globe, chronicling a race against the clock to find and protect these ancient leviathans before they disappear forever. Chasing Giants: In Search of the World’s Largest Freshwater Fish combines science, adventure, and wonder to provide insights into the key role the massive fish of our lakes and rivers play in our past, present, and future.
