Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1916. With Frontispiece by Douglas Duer. From the best-selling Western author, Big Timber begins: The Imperial Limited lurched with a swing around the last hairpin curve of the Yale canyon. Ahead opened out a timbered valley, narrow on its floor, flanked with bold mountains, but nevertheless a valley, down which the rails lay straight and shining on an easy grade. The river that for a hundred miles had boiled and snarled parallel to the tracks, roaring through the granite sluice that cuts the Cascade Range, took a wider channel and a leisurely flow. The mad haste had fallen from it as haste falls from one who, with time to spare, sees his destination near at hand; and the turgid Fraser had time to spare, for now it was but threescore miles to tidewater. So the great river moved placidly-as an old man moves when all the headlong urge of youth is spent and his race near run.

Big Timber was originally founded in the late 1800s. An Irish immigrant named the settlement Dornix, from the Gaelic word durnog, which when translated means a rock that fits in the hand and is handy for throwing, and there are indeed many such rocks around the region. In 1883, however, when complications with the railroad forced the town to move to its present-day location, it was renamed Big Timber, for the grand and plentiful cottonwood trees along the banks of the nearby Boulder and Yellowstone Rivers. Pioneers began arriving in earnest around 1890, bringing with them sheep, and by 1892, Big Timber was among the worlds largest exporters of wool. Later, when a fire devastated the town, the community stood together to rebuild.

Book excerpt: A twelve-year-old boy, middle son in a wealthy, politically and culturally prominent San Francisco family, watches his city disappear in the earthquake and fires of 1906. His father him that nothing has been lost that cannot be swiftly and easily replaced. He quotes Virgil: “Nothing unreal is allowed to survive.” The boy turns this stark Stoic philosophical “consolation” into the radical theater practices of the day, in the course of which he involves himself with radical labor struggles: anarchists, Wobblies, socialists of every stripe. He learns that politics is meta-acting, and he and his girlfriend—a Connecticut mill girl who is on the verge of national recognition as a spokesperson for workers—embark on a speaking tour with a Midwestern anti-railroad, pro-farmer group and take their political, philosophical, and artistic ethos to the farthest limits of the real and the unreal, where they find there is no useful distinction between the two.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A colorful history of logging and its movement from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast. Carol tells the story of those colorful, hardworking and hard playing men who left their mark on the lands. This book is not a definitive study of the logging industry. It would take a series of volumes and the contribution of many historians to accomplish that purpose. This title is more a series of events. Nor should one conclude from the chapters pertaining to the labor movement that all the logging companies are bad. For every company against the fledgling unions was another which provided medical care and emergency methods to transport the injured out of the woods to company hospitals--such as the one provided by Walter M. Reed of Simpson Timber, McCleary, Washington; clean bunk houses, even family apartment buildings such as provided by Polson Logging Company, Montesano, Washington; European trained chefs--such as imported from the New York Waldorf Astoria by the Schafer Brothers of Upper Satsop, Washington, to cook for their loggers; weekend trips into town for loggers and their families--such as provided by Simon Benson Logging Company; company safe deposit vaults--such as provided by Pope and Talbot of Port Gamble, Washington (which company's houses resemble a New England village); modern management techniques--early used by the James logging Company of Cowichan, British Columbia. Nor were all the loggers as a group entirely made up of men anxious to get drunk on those twice-a-year holidays. Those who were not part of the get drunk-and-spend-your-pay crowd were usually loners or went home to visit their families. For some, being loggers was a chosen way of life; they would have it no other way. But it was a hard life, and liquor softened sharp edges of grim reality. For others, there was no other opportunity, thus discontentment.
