Book Synopsis America's Most Alarming Writer by : Bill Broyles
Download or read book America's Most Alarming Writer written by Bill Broyles and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of more than twenty books and a revered contributor to numerous national publications, Charles Bowden (1945–2014) used his keen storyteller’s eye to reveal both the dark underbelly and the glorious determination of humanity, particularly in the borderlands between the United States and Mexico. In America’s Most Alarming Writer, key figures in his life—including his editors, collaborators, and other writers—deliver a literary wake for the man who inspired them throughout his forty-year career. Part revelation, part critical assessment, the fifty essays in this collection span the decades from Bowden’s rise as an investigative journalist through his years as a singular voice of unflinching honesty about natural history, climate change, globalization, drugs, and violence. As the Chicago Tribune noted, “Bowden wrote with the intensity of Joan Didion, the voracious hunger of Henry Miller, the feral intelligence and irony of Hunter Thompson, and the wit and outrage of Edward Abbey.” An evocative complement to The Charles Bowden Reader, the essays and photographs in this homage brilliantly capture the spirit of a great writer with a quintessentially American vision. Bowden is the best writer you’ve (n)ever read.

Download or read book Gemini written by William Kelley and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-07-27 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gemini is the story of young Bascomb McGoslin and his search for love and spiritual fulfillment—a search which became a desperate flight from the life and the world he had known before. Behind Bascomb’s headlong escape was June Cyzmanski—a willful, beautiful creature as hungry for love as he, but with an honesty he had not yet achieved. Torn by his passion for Cyz and by his guilt over their love affair, Bascomb was impelled to seek absolution for his sins within the religious life. Gemini is many things. It is a bold and honest portrait of a man trapped by his own keen intelligence in a nightmare of doubt and ignorance. It is a fascinating and faithful recreation of seminary life. And, above all, it is a haunting story of love—between man and woman, man and God. William Kelley was born in 1929, the fourth of seven children. His first novel, Gemini was a best seller when first published in 1959. He has an extensive background as both writer and producer, having written numerous movies and series for television as well as 7 novels. He received an Academy Award for best screenplay in 1986 for Witness.

Book Synopsis Audio Mastering: The Artists by : Russ Hepworth-Sawyer
Download or read book Audio Mastering: The Artists written by Russ Hepworth-Sawyer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Audio Mastering: The Artists collects more than twenty interviews, drawn from more than 60 hours of discussions, with many of the world’s leading mastering engineers. In these exclusive and often intimate interviews, engineers consider the audio mastering process as they, themselves, experience and shape it as the leading artists in their field. Each interview covers how engineers got started in the recording industry, what prompted them to pursue mastering, how they learned about the process, which tools and techniques they routinely use when they work, and a host of other particulars of their crafts. We also spoke with mix engineers, and craftsmen responsible for some of the more iconic mastering tools now on the market, to gain a broader perspective on their work. This book is the first to provide such a comprehensive overview of the audio mastering process told from the point-of-view of the artists who engage in it. In so doing, it pulls the curtain back on a crucial, but seldom heard from, agency in record production at large.

Whereas atmospheric modeling was once the domain ofa few research units at universities or government laboratories, it can now be performed almost anywhere thanks to the affordability of computing power. Atmospheric general circulation models (GCMs) are being used by a rapidly growing scientific community in a wide range of applications. With widespread interest in anthropogenic climate change, GCMs have a role also in informing policy discussions. Many of the scientists using GCMs have backgrounds in fields other than atmospheric sciences and may be unaware of how GCMs are constructed. Recognizing this explosion in the application of GCMs, we organized a two week course in order to give young scientists who are relatively new to the field of atmospheric modeling a thorough grounding in the basic principles on which GCMs are constructed, an insight into their strengths and weaknesses, and guid ance on how meaningful numerical experiments are formulated and analyzed. Sponsored by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and other institu tions, this Advanced Study Institute (ASI) took place May 25-June 5, 1998, at II Ciocco, a remote hotel on a Tuscan hillside in Italy.
