Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alex Wolff canvasses the globe and travels to 16 different countries (and 10 states in the U.S.) to find out exactly why basketball has become a worldwide phenomenon. Whether it's in a pick-up game on the Royal court in Bhutan, in the heart of a former female college player of the year turned cloistered nun, in the tragedy of the legendary junior national team in war torn Yugoslavia, or in the life's work of one of the greatest players to ever play in the NBA, Alex Wolff discovers that basketball can define an individual, a race, a culture, and in some instances even a country. Fusing John Feinstein's talent for finding the human drama behind sport with Bill Bryson's travelogue style, Wolff shows how the power and love of basketball extends to the four corners of the earth and engages people of all cultures, races, genders, and generations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS small volume contains some of the letters I have received during the last thirty years or more from well-known big-game hunters and field-naturalists, many of whom have now passed away. They were so interesting to me that I thought they might interest others who have shot in wilder Africa. Moreover, they describe conditions which are no longer possible considering the way many parts of that continent have been opened up since the Great War. Whether the spread of a so-called civilization is a good thing I do not wish to discuss, but I know there are many men, including myself, who would prefer the older times when things were less complicated and conventional. Many people are now going in for photography more than shooting, and in a way this is a good thing as it will naturally help to conserve the game. It is, however, a much less risky amusement to take animals’ pictures—I mean dangerous animals—than to try to kill them, for game such as lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros are seldom dangerous until they are wounded and followed up in thick cover. Some people may doubt this statement, but it is nevertheless true, as all experienced hunters can vouch.

Imagine a raw, raining, 15-day hunt for Alaska brown bears and placing a tiny sight pin on a 1,400-pound monster. Imagine trekking for the Grand Slam of wild sheep; muskox 50 miles from the North Pole; and a world record elk in the Montana mountains. The writing is vintage Chuck Adams - spine tingling, extreme bowhunting adventure with practical, proven bowhunting knowledge woven throughout.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As thrilling as any novel, as taut and exciting as any adventure story, Peter Hathaway Capstick’s Death in the Long Grass takes us deep into the heart of darkness to view Africa through the eyes of one of the most renowned professional hunters. Few men can say they have known Africa as Capstick has known it—leading safaris through lion country; tracking man-eating leopards along tangled jungle paths; running for cover as fear-maddened elephants stampede in all directions. And of the few who have known this dangerous way of life, fewer still can recount their adventures with the flair of this former professional hunter-turned-writer. Based on Capstick’s own experiences and the personal accounts of his colleagues, Death in the Long Grassportrays the great killers of the African bush—not only the lion, leopard, and elephant, but the primitive rhino and the crocodile waiting for its unsuspecting prey, the titanic hippo and the Cape buffalo charging like an express train out of control. Capstick was a born raconteur whose colorful descriptions and eye for exciting, authentic detail bring us face to face with some of the most ferocious killers in the world—underrated killers like the surprisingly brave and cunning hyena, silent killers such as the lightning-fast black mamba snake, collective killers like the wild dog. Readers can lean back in a chair, sip a tall, iced drink, and revel in the kinds of hunting stories Hemingway and Ruark used to hear in hotel bars from Nairobi to Johannesburg, as veteran hunters would tell of what they heard beyond the campfire and saw through the sights of an express rifle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Tall tales of tall ranges. Good reading for any man, for he’ll find his sport, be it fishing, riding, camping, good jokes, fine sportsmanship and hardy company sandwiched in between the big game hunting. Annabel is a guide who certainly knows his trails and game, but far more important he knows what few others do—how to tell a grand story. Brought up in the big game country of Alaska he learned from bitter experience why Tex had wisely refused to let him peruse precocious rams up mountain peaks in winter, how to stalk grizzlies, to manage horses in spring drifts, to bring out heads with 69 inch spreads, and with delicious humor teach adventurous grizzlies a lesson. There are caribou, too, although he makes their hunting sound a bit too easy-dude-ranchey after the he-man stuff which characterizes his usual trips. “It is a book to whet the appetite of any man or woman who has ever longed to stalk big game. Africa is a long way safely out of reach. But Alaska—by plane? Well, maybe, if times pick up before they’re too old for such strenuous adventure. Meanwhile Annabel as guide and all Alaska lies before them. Suggest it as the best possible vacation to take in one’s den.”—Kirkus Review

Book excerpt: Never was the notion of "explore, experience, and evolve" more clear to Fred than the day he stepped into the dark woods alone (at the tender age of 27) and embraced adventure over unqualified panic for the first time in his life. For an entitled, self-confessed, five-star-resort-and-country-club snob, an elk hunting trip seemed unlikely-let alone three of them. But his evolution from elitist with a wine list to someone who discovers and embraces a profound love for the simple, unspoiled outdoors went far beyond just exchanging a coat and tie for more-comfortable camouflage. It was with great excitement (read: blissful ignorance) that he plunged into a world of discomforting unknowns, at the urging of his friend and hunting partner, Jon, who had amassed a lifetime of outdoor experiences and endeavored to pass along his fascination, skills, and love of the great outdoors to Fred, a true greenhorn. In this nonfiction narrative, Fred shares his hunting adventures, along with his missteps, relentless apprehensions, countless dents to his ego, and successes and failures alike, all of which lead to an extraordinary transformation that extends well beyond the forest. The goal (besides eliciting unrelenting bouts of snort-inducing laughter) is to encourage a retreat from cell phones and video games and to breed interest in the outdoors. Fred shares these experiences that have had a profound effect on him in the hope that it will encourage others to leap at the opportunity to experience life firsthand, engage all five senses, and explore this amazing world for themselves. Walk side by side with him as he confronts his own personal demons, along with intimidating animals that threaten his privileged existence, in a vast, unfamiliar, and often uncomfortable environment.
