Book excerpt: Perturbation methods have always been an important tool for treating nonlinear differential equations. Now the drudgery associated with them has been eliminated! This book offers computer algebra (MACSYMA) programs which implement the most popular perturbation methods. Not only does this avoid the errors associated with hand computation, but the increase in efficiency permits more complicated problems to be tackled. This book is useful both for the beginner learning perturbation methods for the first time, as well as for the researcher. Methods covered include: Lindstedt's method, center manifolds, normal forms, two variable expansion method (method of multiple scales), averaging, Lie transforms and Liapunov-Schmidt reduction. For each method the book includes an introduction and some example problems solved both by hand and by machine. The examples feature common bifurcations such as the pitchfork and the Hopf. The MACSYMA code for each method is given and suggested exercises are provided at the end of each Chapter. An Appendix offers a brief introduction to MACSYMA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the many different deterministic non-linear dynamic systems (physical, mechanical, technical, chemical, ecological, economic, and civil and structural engineering), the discovery of irregular vibrations in addition to periodic and almost periodic vibrations is one of the most significant achievements of modern science. An in-depth study of the theory and application of non-linear science will certainly change one's perception of numerous non-linear phenomena and laws considerably, together with its great effects on many areas of application. As the important subject matter of non-linear science, bifurcation theory, singularity theory and chaos theory have developed rapidly in the past two or three decades. They are now advancing vigorously in their applications to mathematics, physics, mechanics and many technical areas worldwide, and they will be the main subjects of our concern. This book is concerned with applications of the methods of dynamic systems and subharmonic bifurcation theory in the study of non-linear dynamics in engineering. It has grown out of the class notes for graduate courses on bifurcation theory, chaos and application theory of non-linear dynamic systems, supplemented with our latest results of scientific research and materials from literature in this field. The bifurcation and chaotic vibration of deterministic non-linear dynamic systems are studied from the viewpoint of non-linear vibration.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of papers on the subject of nonlinear dynamics and its applications written by experts in this field. It offers the reader a sampling of exciting research areas in this fast-growing field. The topics covered include chaos, tools to analyze motions, fractal boundaries, dynamics of the Fitzhugh-Nagumo equation, structural control, separation of contaminations from signal of interest, parametric excitation, stochastic bifurcation, mode localization in repetitive structures, Toda lattice, transition from soliton to chaotic motion, nonlinear normal modes, noise perturbations of nonlinear dynamical systems, and phase locking of coupled limit cycle oscillators. Mathematical methods include Lie transforms, Monte Carlo simulations, stochastic calculus, perturbation methods and proper orthogonal decomposition. Applications include gyrodynamics, tether connected satellites, shell buckling, nonlinear circuits, volume oscillations of a large lake, systems with stick-slip friction, imperfect or disordered structures, overturning of rigid blocks, central pattern generators, flow induced oscillations, shape control and vibration suppression of elastic structures. All of these diverse contributions have a common thread: the world of nonlinear behavior. Although linear dynamics is an invaluable tool, there are many problems where nonlinear effects are essential. Some examples include bifurcation of solutions, stability of motion, the effects of large displacements, and subharmonic resonance. This book shows how nonlinear dynamics is currently being utilized and investigated. It will be of interest to engineers, applied mathematicians and physicists.

Book excerpt: Devoted to local and global analysis of weakly connected systems with applications to neurosciences, this book uses bifurcation theory and canonical models as the major tools of analysis. It presents a systematic and well motivated development of both weakly connected system theory and mathematical neuroscience, addressing bifurcations in neuron and brain dynamics, synaptic organisations of the brain, and the nature of neural codes. The authors present classical results together with the most recent developments in the field, making this a useful reference for researchers and graduate students in various branches of mathematical neuroscience.

The nonlinear dynamics of coupled oscillators is investigated numerically and analytically. Three different mechanical, and one biomechanical, examples are used to demonstrate a general systematical approach to the study of dissipative dynamical systems. Many original examples of special chaotic behavior are discussed and illustrated.

Book excerpt: This book is a revised and updated version, including a substantial portion of new material, of J. D. Cole's text Perturbation Methods in Applied Mathe matics, Ginn-Blaisdell, 1968. We present the material at a level which assumes some familiarity with the basics of ordinary and partial differential equations. Some of the more advanced ideas are reviewed as needed; therefore this book can serve as a text in either an advanced undergraduate course or a graduate level course on the subject. The applied mathematician, attempting to understand or solve a physical problem, very often uses a perturbation procedure. In doing this, he usually draws on a backlog of experience gained from the solution of similar examples rather than on some general theory of perturbations. The aim of this book is to survey these perturbation methods, especially in connection with differ ential equations, in order to illustrate certain general features common to many examples. The basic ideas, however, are also applicable to integral equations, integrodifferential equations, and even to_difference equations. In essence, a perturbation procedure consists of constructing the solution for a problem involving a small parameter B, either in the differential equation or the boundary conditions or both, when the solution for the limiting case B = 0 is known. The main mathematical tool used is asymptotic expansion with respect to a suitable asymptotic sequence of functions of B.

This book was released on 2019-12-24 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present time, two of the most important approaches to tackle complex systems are probability and stochastic processes theory. Still from an analytic perspective, modeling and solving a problem using a stochastic approach is not a trivial issue, hence, a combination of the logic of probabilistic reasoning with computational science is needed to obtain qualitatively good solutions in a reasonable time. This eBook presents an interesting view of applications associated to fields of probability, statistics, and mathematic modeling, all of them supported by a computational context though the approach of stochasticity and simulation used in most of them. This collection contains three chapters, which bring applications in fields of biology, finance and physics, each chapter contains work(s) with specific applications. An editorial is also contained with a summarized version of each work, and each of them are widely explained in a specific section, which include a state of art to support the nature of the individual research, a methodology to solve the defined problem and the results and conclusions. We hope the present eBook can represent a potential source of knowledge for the academic community of implicated disciplines, and an inspirational starting point of starting for scientists in the amazing world of applied mathematics and the search to solve complex problems
