Book excerpt: A compilation of some 150 refereed papers that were presented at PAH- 13 (October 1991), the first meeting in the PAH symposium series to be convened outside the US. The papers concern the chemistry, biological effects, and measurement of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and related compounds. Following two papers by Gernot Grimmer, who received the 1991 PAH Award at the meeting for his lifetime contributions in all three of the aforementioned areas, the remaining papers are arranged within 13 sections: standard reference materials and methods; PAH transformation and degradation; molecular modeling and theory; PAH-analysis, methodology; PAH analysis in aquatic systems and geological samples; PAH analysis in emission sources and in ambient air; PAHs in coal and petroleum; metabolic activity, mutagenicity; DNA-adducts, mechanisms, characterization; DNA-binding, metabolic activation; PAH exposure, biomonitoring; Comparative metabolism of B[a]P; and bioactivation, metabolites. Book excerpt: This book deals with the application of spectroscopic techniques for characterisation of chemical and physical structures in viscoelastic materials, such as unvulcanised elastomers and their vulcanisates, various rubbery materials and some plastics, which when blended with particular additives (plasticisers) behave like rubbers. Analysis of the rubbery materials is complicated by the fact that rubbery products, such as tyres, tubes, seals, V-belts and hoses, contain in the rubbery matrix a significant amount of various compounds, i.e., fillers, vulcanising agents, antioxidants and plasticisers. Due to the complex composition, no single technique can provide a good understanding of the effect of chemical and physical structures on the functional properties of rubbery materials. Thus spectroscopy has become a powerful tool for the determination of polymer structures. The most comprehensive information on chemical and physical structures in relation to material properties can be obtained by using a combination of macroscopic techniques and methods that provide information on the molecular level. frequently used for analysis of rubbery materials, i.e., various methods of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and optical spectroscopy. The main objective of this present book is to discuss a wide range of applications of the spectroscopic techniques for the analysis of rubbery materials. The book brings together the various spectroscopic techniques for obtaining the following information: chemical structure of rubbery materials, network structure analysis, heterogeneity of rubbery materials, physical properties of rubbery materials, functional properties and stability of rubbery materials, processing of rubbery materials and quality control. The contents of this book are of interest to chemists, physicists, material scientists and technologists who seek a better understanding of rubbery materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Forensics for Persistent Organic Pollutants represents the state-of-the-art in environmental forensics in relation to persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The book is a complete reference for practitioners and students, covering a range of topics from new analytical techniques to regulatory and legal status in the global community. Through case studies from leading international experts, real-world issues — including the allocation of responsibility for release into the environment — are resolved through the application of advanced analytical and scientific techniques. This book introduces and assesses the development of new techniques and technologies to trace the source and fate of newly emerging and classic POPs (perfluoroalkyl substances, brominated flame retardants, organochlorine pesticides, perfluorinated chemicals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls) in environmental media, including atmospheric, marine, freshwater, and urban environments. - Real-world case studies show the application of advanced analytical and scientific techniques - Discussion of GC*GC provides an introduction and assessment of a novel technique from leaders in the field - Introduces the development of new analytical techniques (such as 2-D GC*HC and LC*LC) to trace the source and fate - Raises awareness about the health and environmental impact of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) - Outlines the development of international measures to control POPs so that chemists can understand the legal issues

Book excerpt: Encouraging the incorporation of molecular biology techniques into the experimental approach to various toxicological problems, the format of the book is two-staged. Each chapter first introduces how various molecular techniques can be successfully applied to solving a specific toxicology question and proceeds to describe the techniques themselves. Also included is a discussion of the benefits and limitations of these techniques . This book will prove of value to practising researchers, but also to graduate students dealing with conceptual issues relating to molecular toxicology.

Book excerpt: Pollution Prevention: Fundamentals and Practice provides a thorough foundation in pollution prevention concepts and methods. It fills an important role in the engineering curriculum by giving engineers in all disciplines the tools to incorporate environmental consequences in decision making in the same way that economic and safety factors are considered. The wealth of background information included makes this an ideal choice for those new to the field as well as for environmental engineering or chemical engineering majors and practitioners. Starting with an introduction to pollution prevention, the author progresses through a review of pollution and its consequences and describes the regulatory framework under which the industry must operate. Later chapters emphasize the sources of industrial pollution and how these can be minimized, the methodology for conducting life-cycle assessments and developing successful pollution prevention plans, and technological means for minimizing the use of water, energy, and reagents in manufacturing. Materials selection, process and product design, and packaging also are addressed. Throughout the text, example problems provide abundant opportunities to apply the concepts learned.

Book excerpt: To Connect. To Feel. To Empathize. Weather patterns are changing. Deforestation is accelerating climate change. This sorry state of affairs has extended to the oceans as well. Overfishing and rampant dumping is seriously endangering the marine ecosystem. There has never been a more urgent need to re-engage with nature. We have been away from nature for far too long and what was once an interdependent relationship, has now become a one-way street. Where we have just been taking and not giving back in the same measure. The premise of this book is to reawaken the ‘kindred spirit’ feeling with nature. It believes that when we go back to nature, we will be able to get the relationship going. The book is written as a collection of adventures, memories and thrilling encounters with wildlife over 40 years of trails and treks of the Wilson College Nature Club in biodiversity across India. The pages chronicle amazing creatures, plants, herbs, animals, birds and everything that makes nature so fascinating. It is the voice of a nature lover keen to get people off their couches and screens to experience nature at their own pace. It is meant to rekindle the desire to go out there and give Mother Nature much needed TLC.
