Book Synopsis The Vigorous Core of Our Nationality by : Stanley E. Blake
Download or read book The Vigorous Core of Our Nationality written by Stanley E. Blake and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vigorous Core of Our Nationality explores conceptualizations of regional identity and a distinct population group known as nordestinos in northeastern Brazil during a crucial historical period. Beginning with the abolition of slavery and ending with the demise of the Estado Novo under Getœlio Vargas, Stanley E. Blake offers original perspectives on the paradoxical concept of the nordestino and the importance of these debates to the process of state and nation building. Since colonial times, the Northeast has been an agricultural region based primarily on sugar production. The area's population was composed of former slaves and free men of African descent, indigenous Indians, European whites, and mulattos. The image of the nordestino was, for many years, linked with the predominant ethnic group in the region, the Afro-Brazilian. For political reasons, however, the conception of the nordestino later changed to more closely resemble white Europeans. Blake delves deeply into local archives and determines that politicians, intellectuals, and other urban professionals formulated identities based on theories of science, biomedicine, race, and social Darwinism. While these ideas served political, social, and economic agendas, they also inspired debates over social justice and led to reforms for both the region and the people. Additionally, Blake shows how debates over northeastern identity and the concept of the nordestino shaped similar arguments about Brazilian national identity and "true" Brazilian people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A brilliant and sensitive portrayal not only of Canudos, but of the sertão more generally. By making the defenders of Canudos less spectacular and exceptional, [Levine] has rescued them from the museum of curiosities and restored them to the mainstream of backland life. It is about time we had such nuanced understanding about this tragic misunderstanding."—Steven C. Topik, Luso-Brazilian Review
Book Synopsis British Literature 1640-1789 by : Robert DeMaria, Jr.
Download or read book British Literature 1640-1789 written by Robert DeMaria, Jr. and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1997-01-30 with total page 1248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Literature 1640-1789: An Anthology covers the period between the British Civil War and the French Revolution. It includes the works of a great many authors and provides an invitingly wide variety of genres, forms, opinions, viewpoints, and styles. Canonical literary works are extensively represented and most texts are reprinted in their entirety including, for example, Aphra Behn's Oronooko and John Milton's Paradise Lost from first editions, or in the earliest recoverable versions. Other major works include: Daniel Defoe's The Shortest Way with Dissenters, Oliver Goldsmith's The Deserted Village, Alexander Pope's The Rape of the Lock and The Dunciad, Jonathan Swift's A Tale of a Tub and A Modest Proposal, Samuel Johnson's The History of Rasselas. Selections from contemporary documents (such as court reports) are used to illuminate important cultural and social issues at particular points of history. A central aim has been to represent the period in a way that would have been more recognizable to people who lived at the time than the more conventional collection of great works of literature might do. By including the literature of private life and public life - letters, political ballads, broadsides, mock-epic poetry - DeMaria helps us to revise our sense of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century literature.
Download or read book MUSICAGE written by John Cage and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pioneering composer and music theorist makes his final on the totality of his work and thought in these three wide-ranging dialogues. “I was obliged to find a radical way to work ― to get at the real, at the root of the matter,” John Cage says in this trio of dialogues, completed just days before his death. This quest led him beyond the bounds of convention in all his musical, written, and visual pieces. The resulting expansion of the definition of art earned him a reputation as one of America's most influential contemporary artists. Joan Retallack's conversations with Cage explore his artistic production in its entirety. Cage's comments range from his theories of chance and indeterminate composition to his long-time collaboration with Merce Cunningham to the aesthetics of his multimedia works. In her comprehensive introduction, Retallack describes Cage’s lifelong project as “dislodging cultural authoritarianism and gridlock by inviting surprising conjunctions within carefully delimited frameworks and processes.” Consummate performer to the end, Cage delivers here just such a conjunction ― a tour de force that provides new insights into the man and a clearer view of the status of art in the twentieth century.

Download or read book Lisbon written by Fernando Pessoa and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fernando Pesoa wrote this guide to Lisbon, in English, at some point during the 1920s. It was never published and the manuscript was only found amongst his papers long after his death. Its interest is twofold : anything form Pesoa's pen is de facto of interest, but je is also the quintessential city poet, and very much the poet of the cityof Lisbon. He loved the city, knew all of its corners, and scarcely left it after his early years there, following his school-days in Durban. The book can stillbe used as a guide today. The text has been updated only so as to take account of the modern Portuguese spelling of names and places (4e de couv. ).

Book Synopsis Lady Mary Wortley Montagu by : Isobel Grundy
Download or read book Lady Mary Wortley Montagu written by Isobel Grundy and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to look at Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's achievement as a vital figure in the women's literary tradition. Robert Halsband's book on her life, the sixth this century and published in 1956, was the first to apply scholarly techniques to establishing the facts. The inaccurateaccounts given before Halsband testify to Lady Mary's compelling interest as a woman who wrote, travelled, campaigned publicly for medical advance, gossiped, and was involved in high-profile literary quarrels. Knowledge of her life has made considerable gains since Halsband, as understanding of theissues involved in trying to move between the roles of proper lady and woman writer has increased enormously. This life fruitfully exploits the tension between literary history and feminist reading. Isobel Grundy highlights Montagu's adolescent longing for literary fame, her growing understandingof the implications of this for gender and class imperatives, the frustrations and concessions involved in her collaborations with male writers, the punitive responses of society, the gaps at every stage of her life between her ascertainable circumstances and her construction of herself in lettersand other writings. The book situates those writings in relation to her own theorizing and her very wide reading in women's texts as well as men's. Finally, it looks at a range of contemporary and near-contemporary responses.

Book Synopsis The Other Mirror by : Miguel Angel Centeno
Download or read book The Other Mirror written by Miguel Angel Centeno and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If social science's "cultural turn" has taught us anything, it is that knowledge is constrained by the time and place in which it is produced. In response, scholars have begun to reassess social theory from the standpoints of groups and places outside of the European context upon which most grand theory is based. Here a distinguished group of scholars reevaluates widely accepted theories of state, property, race, and economics against Latin American experiences with a two-fold purpose. They seek to deepen our understanding of Latin America and the problems it faces. And, by testing social science paradigms against a broader variety of cases, they pursue a better and truly generalizable map of the social world. Bringing universal theory into dialogue with specific history, the contributors consider what forms Latin American variations of classical themes might take and which theories are most useful in describing Latin America. For example, the Argentinian experience reveals the limitations of neoclassical descriptions of economic development, but Charles Tilly's emphasis on the importance of war and collective action to statemaking holds up well when thoughtfully adapted to Latin American situations. Marxist structural analysis is problematic in a region where political divisions do not fully expresses class cleavages, but aspects of Karl Polanyi's socioeconomic theory cross borders with relative ease. This fresh theoretical discussion expands the scope of Latin American studies and social theory, bringing the two into an unprecedented conversation that will benefit both. Contributors are, in addition to the editors, Jeremy Adelman, Jorge I. Domínguez, Paul Gootenberg, Alan Knight, Robert M. Levine, Claudio Lomnitz, John Markoff, Verónica Montecinos, Steven C. Topik, and J. Samuel Valenzuela.
Book Synopsis Box Grandes Mestres do Estoicismo by : Epicteto de Hierápolis
Download or read book Box Grandes Mestres do Estoicismo written by Epicteto de Hierápolis and published by Edipro. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
