Book excerpt: Pt. 1 describes and analyzes Visigoth civil and canonical legislation regarding the Jews, focusing on restrictions of civil rights (e.g. prohibition of mixed marriage, circumcision, owning Christian slaves, and occupying public office) and on attacks on the foundations of Judaism (e.g. religious instruction, Jewish family life, Jewish celebrations, reading of sacred books, and Jewish courts. Pt. 2 presents and analyzes excerpts concerning Jews from the Breviary of Alaric II; works by the kings Recared, Sisebut, Sisenand, Chintila, Recesvint, Ervigio, and Égica, and by the theologians Isidoro de Sevilla, Idelfonso de Toledo, Tajón de Saragoza, and Julián de Toledo; and documents from several Councils of Toledo (III, IV, VI, VIII, IX, X, XII, XIII, XVI, and XVII). Asserts that in the Visigothic period anti-Jewish texts increasingly focused their attacks on Jewish customs and practices, and not on ideas and doctrines as in the late Roman period.
