Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Storage, Transport, and Distribution theme is a component of Encyclopedia of Water Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. The collection, storage, transportation, and distribution of water are essential components in making water resources accessible for human use. The Theme on Water Storage, Transport, and Distribution, with contributions from distinguished experts in the field, deals with the following important aspects of the subject: Dams and Storage Resevoirs; Monitoring and Evaluating Dams and Resevoirs; Wastewater Storage Technology; Water Transport, which are then expanded into multiple subtopics, each as a chapter. This volume is aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs.

Book Synopsis Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams by : National Research Council
Download or read book Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1991-02-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hazard posed by large dams has long been known. Although no concrete dam has failed as a result of earthquake activity, there have been instances of significant damage. Concerns about the seismic safety of concrete dams have been growing recently because the population at risk in locations downstream of major dams continues to expand and because the seismic design concepts in use at the time most existing dams were built were inadequate. In this book, the committee evaluates current knowledge about the earthquake performance of concrete dams, including procedures for investigating the seismic safety of such structures. Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams specifically informs researchers about state-of-the-art earthquake analysis of concrete dams and identifies subject areas where additional knowledge is needed.

Book Synopsis Position Paper Dam Safety and Earthquakes by : CIGB ICOLD
Download or read book Position Paper Dam Safety and Earthquakes written by CIGB ICOLD and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-06-27 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earthquakes have always been a significant aspect of the design and safety of dams. This position paper deals with the seismic safety of large dams, based on experiences with large earthquakes in Japan (Tohoku earthquake, 2011, Richter magnitude 9.0), in China (Wenchuan earthquake, 2008, Richter magnitude 8.0) and in Chile (Maule earthquake, 2010, Richter magnitude 8.8). It presents ways to prevent key aspects of large dam failure under severe seismic conditions with a focus on design instead of on earthquake prediction. This is done by considering the prevention of uncontrolled rapid release of water of a storage dam under full reservoir conditions in relation to expected seismic conditions. This position paper is composed by the Committee on Seismic Aspects of Dam Design of The International Committee of Large Dams.
Book Synopsis Seismic Safety Evaluation of Concrete Dams by : Chong Zhang
Download or read book Seismic Safety Evaluation of Concrete Dams written by Chong Zhang and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consequences of a large dam failing can be disastrous. However, predicting the performance of concrete dams during earthquakes is one of the most complex and challenging problems in structural dynamics. Based on a nonlinear approach, Seismic Safety Evaluation of Concrete Dams allows engineers to build models that account for nonlinear phenomena such as vertical joint slippage, cracks, and cavitation. This yields more accurate estimates. Advanced but readable, this book is the culmination of the work carried out by Tsinghua University Research Group on Earthquake Resistance on Dams over the last two decades. Nonlinearity characteristics of high concrete dams, seismic analysis methods, evaluation models A systematic approach to nonlinear analysis and seismic safety evaluation of concrete dams Includes nonlinear fracture of dam-water-foundation interaction system, dynamic fluid-structure Covers soil-structure interactions, and meso-scale mechanical behavior of concrete are all international front issues of the field
