Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archeological findings verify the occupation of San Diego County by Native Americans going back over 10,000 years, though little is recorded of their history before 1542, when Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed into San Diego Bay and claimed the local territory for Spain. The native population at that time is estimated to have been 20,000, just as it is today. There are 18 reservations in the San Diego County area (17 of which are currently functioning), more than in any other county in the United States. The four primary tribal groups making up the Native Americans of the San Diego County area are the Kumeyaay (also known as Diegueño), Luiseño, Cupeño, and Cahuilla. Each of these groups has faced many hardships and setbacks while attempting to rebuild their nations to the proud peoples they once were, still are, and always shall be.

Considered the most traditional of all North American Indian tribes, the Kickapoo maintain much of their traditional culture, religion, and language. This book provides the first comprehensive bibliography on the history and culture of the Kickapoo Indians. Covering materials from the 1800s to 1998, it includes books and book chapters, journal articles, theses and dissertations, conference papers, government publications, and Internet sites. Opening with an introduction providing an overview of the Kickapoo, the book is arranged topically. Descriptive and critical annotations guide researchers to the most useful sources on a plethora of topics. Topical sections include such subjects as acculturation, ceremonies, culture, folklore, and food as well as such issues as education, housing, economics, relations with whites, land tenure and migration, and medicine and health.

Book excerpt: "The Ipai (also known as Kumeyaay) are the native people of northern San Diego County. This book illustrates how one Ipai family's remarkable story forms part of the little-known, yet profoundly significant long-term history of human habitation in the land that only recently has come to be known as southern California. Beginning with the ancestors' accounts of the creation of the world that link the Ipai with the unique characteristics of our region's natural world, the journey then takes readers through the archaeological, historical, ethnographic and contemporary accounts of the dramatic transformations through which the Ipai have persisted and ultimately prospered"--Provided by publisher.
