Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Teachings Concerning the Sabbath and the Sunday In 1870 the author of the following pages issued a work entitled "The Sabbath and the Sunday, Argument and History." The favorable reception granted to that volume, and the increasing agitation concerning the Sabbath question in the United States, led to the issue of three other volumes, as follows: The first edition of this book in 1884; "A Critical History of the Sabbath and the Sunday in The Christian Church," a larger volume, which embodies the history of the theories and practices relative to both days; in 1886, "A Critical History of Sunday Legislation, from A. D. 321 to 1888," which appeared in March, 1888. The second edition of this book appears at a time when the agitation of the Sabbath question is more wide-spread and intense than at any previous time in our national history. The popular tendency is to avoid a direct appeal to the Word of God in the settlement of the question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Church in this city, the Seventh Day Advent Soul-Sleepers, pitched their tent a few blocks east of my Church and for several weeks run a tent meeting, propagating their peculiar doctrines, and trying to proselyte others to their faith. Some of our people who attended their meetings and read their tracts, which they industriously circulated, begun to be disturbed in mind about their doctrines, and I felt that it was my duty to preach on those points, which I did, announcing beforehand that on the next Sabbath I would preach on "The Divine Authority for the Observance of the Christian Sabbath." I prepared my sermon with great care, writing it out in full. Some time after I preached the same sermon in our District Conference at Billings, Mo., and the Conference requested its publication. A multiplicity of labors and cares have prevented me from complying with that request until now. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sabbath and the Sunday: Part 1, Argument; Part II, History Many leaders in the Church know the truth, but are unwilling to obey it - He that knoweth his master's will and doeth it not shall be beaten with many stripes. If the people catch Sight of the truth, these leaders quiet them by stig matizing the Jewish Saturday and boasting of the majority who favor Sunday. Such things cannot always be, justice has not lost her' sword and God has not forgotten the world. Our hope is in Him. In His name these pages go forth, while we labor and wait for the hour in which He will vindicate the long-neglected Sabbath. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sunday, the True Sabbath of God: Or, Saturday Proven to Be Neither the Sabbath of the Old Testament, Nor the Sabbath of the Ancients, Who Lived Before the Christian Era; Being a Complete Refutation of the Saturday-Sabbath Heresy, and a Vindication of the Changeableness of the Day of The This book discusses a truth essential to the very existence of Christianity. Without the Christian Sabbath, it would be impossible long to perpetuate the Christian religion. To handle so vital a truth requires a master's hand. So far as the substance of truth is concerned, we do not hesitate so to classify our author. Peculiarly qualified for the work of sifting the facts and deducing the proper conclusions, Mr. Gamble justifies the expectation that he will lead the reader to final results. The exhaustive study of the Scriptures, and the wide familiarity with the literature on the Sabbath and the extended historical research, give to this work a value not surpassed by any other treatise in this field. Other works are rich in other departments of the subject; but on the controverted point raised by Saturdarians, this argument moves with all the quietness and certainty of a mathematical demonstration. It is this or nothing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I do not destroy, but give each Truth its place and time, as well as its purpose. For which God has intended it. I. Do ask that it may be read in the same spirit in which it has been written; compare and read with the Word, and the Truth will come to you and give you an understanding heart; so as you read you can see that the change from the Sabbath of the Deca logue, or seventh day, has been Divinely Ordained by the Holy Ghost, and that the Sabbath of the New Covenant falls by his authority on the First Day of the Week. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rest and Resurrection, or the Sabbath and the Sunday Sunday's notes are a harmony of earth's hosan nabs and of heaven's hallelujahs. On its deeds are written, Glory to God in the highest, good will towards men. Faith lays hold of Sunday, and bids us believe that the Saviour rose for our justification. Hope rejoices in the Lord's-day, and writes upon its sacred hours, Christ is risen from the dead, and is become the first - fruits of them that slept. Love claims Sunday for her own possession, and urges her strongest plea, that we which live should not hence forth live unto ourselves, but unto Him that died for us and rose again. Sunday is the day on which earth and heaven may be united, joined in the one great work of direct adoration of the Universal King. The seventh link of heaven's golden chain is dropped, that we may see its beauty; and the seventh link of earth's iron chain is caught up, that it may be loosened. Flowers from heaven's paradise are showered down that we may know their fragrance, and the fading buds of earth breathe heaven's atmosphere that they may be revived. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sunday Our Sabbath, Proved From Scripture and History to Be God's Rest Day, and II. Showing What Is Meant by the Command, "Remember the Sabbath Day to Keep It Holy" A Lecture God's work. This first mention of the Sabbath is in connection with the completion of creation's work by the introduction Of man on earth, and his first day was to be spent in adoring and worshipping his Maker. It makes no difference to this question of the origination of the Sabbath, whether the days were geological epochs or natural days of duration. It is the rest of the Creator that is symbolized and the work of creation that is commemorated, and not the manner or duration of the work. So, then, the ap pointment of the Sabbath as the seventh part of time is coeval with man in Eden. There is noroom left in this statement for the exercise of fancy or speen lation, but the Operation of sober judgment and cor rect exegesis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sabbath Question From the Roman Catholic Standpoint, as Stated by the "Catholic Mirror" Together With Introduction and Remarks The arguments contained in this pamphlet are firmlv grounded on the Word of God, and having been closely studied with the Bible in hand, leave no escape for the conscientious Protestant except the abandonment of Sunday worship and the return to Saturday, commanded by their teacher, the Bible, or unwilling to abandon the tradition of the Catholic Church, which enjoins the keeping of Sunday and which they have accepted in direct opposition to their teacher, the Bible, to consistently accept her in all her teachings. Reason and common sense de mand the acceptance of one or the other of these alternatives. Either Protestantism and the keeping of holy Saturday, or Catholicity and the keeping of Sunday. Compromise is impossible. Shrink from such conclusions as much as they may, Protestants cannot escape the facts, and the logic on which these conclusions rest. Book excerpt: When it comes to the doctrine of the Sabbath, many are confused. Some are so confused that they are asking how many commandments are there, nine or ten? Has the fourth commandment been abrogated or is it still binding? If the fourth commandment stands, then on what day are we to observe the Sabbath, on Saturday or Sunday? Or does it really matter just as long as we take off one day in the week? Others have come to think that all the commandments have been abrogated. Is this true? A more searching question is asked, Is the typical Christian community correct in observing the Sabbath on the first day of the week? Or does the fourth commandment mandate the Sabbath to be observed on seventh day? Still others are asking, is the Sabbath Day and the Lords Day same or are they different? As one can readily see, these questions are troubling to many professing Christians. They are confused as the doctrine of the Sabbath is no longer addressed. However, the more searching question is, if the fourth commandment stands, have we provoked our Lord to anger in failing to observer the Sabbath as we ought? If we are to observe it, then how is the Sabbath to be observed? It is the writers conviction that we are not only to observe the Sabbath, but also until we do, there will be no revival in this country no matter how fervently we may fast and pray. The doctrine of the Sabbath is essential to the life of the church and the liberties we once enjoy as a nation before it was infected with this liberation theology. We must heed the divine mandate coming down from God to Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it Holy (Exodus 20:8).
