Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a uniquely different textbook for studying Biblical Hebrew. It was written by a fellow student who found that gaining some very basic knowledge of the language, dramatically and positively changed his previously held views of the Old Testament. In addition, the author realized that the language was actually not so difficult to master, and that someone with an average intelligence (like himself), could with a bit of dedication and effort, actually master the bulk of the material. He started teaching his friends in South Africa (and later in China). They were ordinary folk, from all walks of life, who also for some time wanted to gain a basic insight into the original language of the Old Testament, but did not want to in any way become involved in formal academic studies. The author was delighted to find that the style and pace in which he presented the material, coupled with the their enthusiasm, resulted in these laymen and -women immediately making rapid and lasting progress. They agreed that the new insights gained - even from the first lesson - were fascinating, and they were excited by the prospect of learning more. He soon realized that the textbooks available at that time were not written with these type of students in mind, and he started making hand-outs suitable for his special target population. With the encouragement of his mentor from a few decades earlier - to whom this book is dedicated - and another genius in the field, he perfected the notes technically, and they became the genesis of what is now presented in this publication.

The book is laid out in four parts. The first part teaches the Hebrew alphabet through a series of lessons. The second part teaches word and sentence structure of the Hebrew language by breaking down each Hebrew word in Genesis chapter one, verses one through five. The Hebrew text of Genesis chapter one is provided for reading and comprehension practices in part three. The fourth part of the book contains charts and dictionaries of prefixes, suffixes, words and roots of the Hebrew language to assist the reader with vocabulary definitions and comprehension. Within a short amount of time the Hebrew student will soon be reading the Bible through the eyes of the author rather than the opinions of a translator.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several Hebraists of the last decade have called for the inclusion of discourse-level issues in introductory studies of Biblical Hebrew. In Learning Biblical Hebrew, Bryan Rocine has written a first-year teaching grammar for Biblical Hebrew prose, taking the student from basic pronunciation forward. Students who have completed introductory courses in Biblical Hebrew often voice well-founded frustrations. They know some of the parts of the language, but they can-not read biblical text with any nuanced understanding. Rocine seeks to gain, for first-year students, the greatest possible advantage for their one-year's efforts. The course is comprised of fifty lessons and eight readings, which run concurrently with lessons 1-50. Each lesson is based on an actual biblical "verse" that illustrates the topic(s) for the lesson. The goals for each lesson are stated at the outset. Almost every lesson contains review material from the previous lesson before introducing the new material. Also for review, the student is given cross-referencing to previously learned material throughout the book. Every lesson has assignments of two types: (1) speed drills in which the student practices the lesson's materials as illustrated in examples containing minimal differences and (2) translation exercises taken from actual biblical texts.

Book excerpt: This is Volume 1 (second edition) of a five volume series titled Biblical Hebrew for All (Volumes 1-5). Biblical Hebrew for All - Volume 1, is intended as a self-study textbook for beginners and undergraduate students, focused on basic grammar & strong verbs. As a whole, the full Biblical Hebrew for All (Volumes 1-5) series features: - 6,223 Grammar examples directly from the Hebrew Bible - 27 Paradigm Charts covering all verb classes - 1500 Verb forms, parsed and translated - 890 Terms in BHS footnotes with examples - The frequency of nouns and verbs shown throughout The full five volume series literally 'lifts the veil' in that it comprises 'a selection of 400 passages from the Hebrew Bible, all fully explained and literally translated to illustrate the fact that a basic knowledge of Biblical Hebrew will enable the reader to compliment any standard English translation and discover much more from the original text'. As a result of his own passion and drive to teach others language, Tian Hattingh has put together straightforward methods and approaches which facilitate students to efficiently learn Biblical Hebrew, (as well as other languages too). Since 2002 Tian has been engaged in working and running ESL/IELTS language schools in Asia, and on taking sight (in photographs) of some of Tian's many hundreds (if not thousands in total) of enthusiastic, happy and joyful language students - one can immediately know that a wonderful teacher and tutor has been found. Tian has a passion and natural gift for learning, studying and teaching languages to aspiring students - and has been doing so for the last 47 years since he began studying the Zulu language in South Africa in 1974. The year 1974 also saw Tian begin studying Hebrew and it was not long before he was running beginner classes at a polytechnic in Rustenburg, South Africa, teaching others the Hebrew language. Since that time Tian has spent considerable time traveling in Israel further developing his understanding of Biblical Hebrew - and between 2014 to 2016 Tian conducted classes for beginners in Biblical Hebrew in the city of Shenzhen, China. Since 2016, since moving to Vietnam, as well as continuing to work at ESL/IELTS language schools, Tian has focused on teaching Biblical Hebrew via online methods - based upon the system of learning 'expressed' and illustrated in the five volumes of Biblical Hebrew for All. The five volumes cover the following: Volume 1: Basic Grammar & Strong Verbs Volume 2: Weak Verbs Volume 3: Doubly Weak Verbs Volume 4: Textual Criticism Volume 5: Lifting the Veil

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achieving the right balance of amount of information, style of presentation, and depth of instruction in first-year grammars is no easy task. But Mark Futato has produced a grammar that, after years of testing in a number of institutions, will please many, with its concise, clear, and well-thought-out presentation of Biblical Hebrew. Because the teaching of biblical languages is in decline in many seminaries and universities, Futato takes pains to measure the amount of information presented in each chapter in a way that makes the quantity digestible, without sacrificing information that is important to retain. The book includes exercises that are drawn largely from the Hebrew Bible itself. Fourth printing, 2012.
