Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decades, increasing numbers of texts have been suggested as coming from or edited during the Persian period, but these discussions do not always reflect extensively on the assumptions used in making these claims or the implications on a broader scale. Earlier generations of scholars found it sufficient to categorize material in the biblical books simply as "late" or "postexilic" without adequately trying to determine when, by whom, and why the material was incorporated into the text at a fixed point in the Persian period. By grappling with these questions, the essays in this volume evince a greater degree of precision vis-a-vis dating and historical context. The authors introduce the designations early Persian, middle Persian, and late Persian in their textual analysis, and collectively they take significant steps toward developing criteria for locating a biblical text within the Persian period. Book excerpt: While strong, gospel-centered preaching abounds, many Christian pastors and lay preachers find it difficult to preach meaningfully from the Old Testament. This practical handbook offers help. Graeme Goldsworthy teaches the basics of preaching the whole Bible in a consistently Christ-centered way. Goldsworthy first examines the Bible, biblical theology, and preaching and shows how they relate in the preparation of Christ-centered sermons. He then applies the biblical-theological method to the various types of literature found in the Bible, drawing out their contributions to expository preaching focused on the person and work of Christ. Clear, complete, and immediately applicable, this volume will become a fundamental text for teachers, pastors, and students preparing for ministry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "God's Grand Plan of the Ages" captures the highlights of the more comprehensive book The Divine Plan of the Ages. Though brief in nature, this 96-page booklet shares a satisfying explanation of age-old questions: Why does a God of love permit the evil we see in the world? Why are there tsunamis and earthquakes that kill thousands—and wars that kill millions? Why must we experience pain, heartache and finally death? When will God's Kingdom come and His will be "done on earth as it is in heaven?" "God's Grand Plan of the Ages" also covers the signs of the "Time of the End" prophecied in the book of Daniel (Daniel 12:1-4). Daniel's predicition that knowledge would be increased is happening before our very eyes as we see the Brain Age coming in at an unprecedented rate. Though technology has been a blessing in many ways, man's selfishness and greed is also leading the world to an ever increasing "time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation." What a comfort to know, that this trouble is a prophetic sign indicating that we are on the brink of the "Golden Age" that mankind has longed for since the dawn of history! God's Kingdom will be more wonderful, more glorious, more all encompassing, than all the dreams of philosophers, poets and sages. There will be a world of peace (Psalm 46:9) The heal ing of all the defects of humanity (Isa iah 35:5,6) Moral integrity will be planted in every heart (Jeremiah 31:33) All the dead of past ages will be raised to life again (1 Cor. 15:22) Sorrow, pain, tears and death itself will cease (Revelation 21:4) "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him" (1 Corinthians 2:9) We hope you will receive a blessing from reading this booklet. We also recommend reading The Divine Plan of the Ages, available FREE on a DVD offered on the back of the booklet. It is but the first book in a series of six that covers every major doctrine of the Bible as a topical study with a harmony that is unprecedented in Christian literature. This six-volume set is also available FREE on the DVD—or at cost, in a hard bound edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the center of this book lies a fundamental yet unanswered question: under which historical and sociological conditions and in what manner the Hebrew Bible became an authoritative tradition, that is, holy scripture and the canon of Judaism as well as Christianity. Reinhard G. Kratz answers this very question by distinguishing between historical and biblical Israel. This foundational and, for the arrangement of the book, crucial distinction affirms that the Israel of biblical tradition, i.e. the sacred history (historia sacra) of the Hebrew Bible, cannot simply be equated with the history of Israel and Judah. Thus, Kratz provides a synthesis of both the Israelite and Judahite history and the genesis and development of biblical tradition in two separate chapters, though each area depends directly and inevitably upon the other. These two distinct perspectives on Israel are then confronted and correlated in a third chapter, which constitutes an area intimately connected with the former but generally overlooked apart from specialized inquiries: those places and "archives" that either yielded Jewish documents and manuscripts (Elephantine, Al-Yahudu, Qumran) or are associated conspicuously with the tradition of the Hebrew Bible (Mount Gerizim, Jerusalem, Alexandria). Here, the various epigraphic and literary evidence for the history of Israel and Judah comes to the fore. Such evidence sometimes represents Israel's history; at other times it reflects its traditions; at still others it reflects both simultaneously. The different sources point to different types of Judean or Jewish identity in Persian and Hellenistic times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After twenty years of research, Dr. J. Barton Payne has compiled the one complete guide to Biblical prophecy. From the prediction of Adam's death in Genesis 2: 17 to the prophecy of mankind's perpetual worship of God in the new heaven and earth (Psalm 72:5), the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BIBLICAL PROPHECY discusses every verse of prophetic matter in Scripture. It identifies every probable point of fulfillment whether in the past, present, or still in the future. The first 144 pages of the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BIBLICAL PROPHECY set forth a systematic approach to the subject of Biblical prophecy and the legitimate place for prediction in it. The ENCYCLOPEDIA is arranged according to the 66 books of the Bible. In each book, all the verses on one prophetic theme are treated in one combined discussion. For example: The 12 verses of Genesis that foretell God's granting of the land of Canaan to the descendants of Abraham are discussed together. It is then shown how the promise was fulfilled in the days of Joshua. One of the ENCYCLOPEDIA'S concluding summaries lists all the 737 major subjects that appear in Biblical prediction, with the books and paragraphs in which each is found. This way, each prophecy can be traced from its first appearance in the Bible to its last. Among the many features is a complete list of all the Scriptural prophecies pertaining to Christ. No other book has ever examined Biblical prophecy so thoroughly or presented it in such a balanced perspective as the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BIBLICAL PROPHECY. -1,817 entries covering all the Biblical predictions in both the Old and New Testaments -A complete discussion of all 8,352 predictive verses in the Bible -14 tables, including three on the Book of Revelation -Bibliography -4 summaries -4 statistical appendixes -5 complete indexes An indispensable tool for students of the Bible, for students in theological seminaries and Bible colleges, for pastors as a reference guide, and for concerned lay people. The ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BIBLICAL PROPHECY is certain to bring a fresh understanding and rewarding insights of the bible.
