Book excerpt: A group of New Zealand's leading cultural studies scholars provide their perspectives on the politics of display in this thought-provoking collection of essays. Philip Armstrong, Roger Blackley, Kyla McFarlane, Annie Potts, and Paul Williams, among others, showcase their thinking about cultural activities--looking and showing, viewing and arranging--that are deeply embedded in ideology. From the antique plaster casts held by Auckland Museum to the wild foods on New Zealand's West Coast, the essays pursue a variety of trajectories on how New Zealanders display themselves and what they profess and contest in their collective representations.
Download or read book This Model World written by Anthony Byrt and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 2011, Anthony Byrt was living in Berlin and building a career as a critic, writing about the world of contemporary art for magazines like frieze and Artforum International. Then one day his world turned upside down and Byrt, his wife and their new-born son suddenly found themselves booked on a one-way trip home to New Zealand. This Model World is a portrait of what Byrt found when he came back. Built around hundreds of hours spent in galleries, artists' studios and on the road from Brisbane to Detroit to Venice, this is a deeply personal journey into the contemporary New Zealand art world and the global world it inhabits. It's a book about major figures like Yvonne Todd, Shane Cotton, Billy Apple, Peter Robinson, Judy Millar and Simon Denny, and emerging artists such as Luke Willis Thompson, Shannon Te Ao and Ruth Buchanan. It's about severed heads and failed cities; about bright young stars and old men with a final point to prove; about looking for God and finding Edward Snowden; and about what it means to investigate the boundary where our bodies hit the world. This Model World – a riveting first-person account of one author's travels to the edge of contemporary art.
Book Synopsis The Venice Biennale and the Asia-Pacific in the Global Art World by : Stephen Naylor
Download or read book The Venice Biennale and the Asia-Pacific in the Global Art World written by Stephen Naylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph uses the national pavilions of the Venice Biennale as a vehicle to examine the development of international contemporary art trends within the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, Japan and Korea and 16 additional national entities who have had less continuous participation in this global art event. Analysing both the spatial and visual representation of contemporary art presented at the Venice Biennale and incorporating the politics behind national selections, this monograph provides insights into a range of important elements of the global art industry. Areas analysed include national cultural trends and strategies, the inversion of the peripheral to the centre stage of the Biennale, geopolitics in gaining exhibition space at the Venice Biennale, curatorial practices for contemporary art presentation and artistic trends that seek to deal with major economic, cultural, religious and environmental issues emerging from non-European art centres. This monograph will be of interest to scholars in art history, museum studies and Asia-Pacific cultural history.

Book Synopsis Skin in the Game by : Clémentine Deliss
Download or read book Skin in the Game written by Clémentine Deliss and published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. This book was released on 2023-12-13 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skin in the Game follows on from the acclaimed fieldwork diary, The Metabolic Museum. In this new book, Clémentine Deliss expands on how artists understand risk and contention both in their work and with regard to historical collections. Through a series of compelling conversations, questions are raised on how to work on colonial collections through the concept of the "prototype" as generative of a multiplicity of non-exclusive interpretations. The book includes interviews with leading women artists spanning two generations—Ruth Buchanan, Otobong Nkanga, Collier Schorr, Joëlle Tuerlinckx, and Andrea Zittel—in which they discuss that moment of "skin in the game," when each of them took the decision to become an artist, to enter the Hades of an uncertain existence and the Heaven of aesthetic experiment. What was the prototype that defined their career and their life's trajectory, that like a revenant returns over the course of an artist's lifetime? CLÉMENTINE DELISS (*1960, London) is an independent curator whose practice crosses the borders of contemporary art, critical anthropology and curatorial experimentation. She is internationally recognized for her seminal work on the Post-Ethnographic, on African modernism, and for her interventionist practices in art. She is Honorary Global Humanities Professor of History of Art at the University of Cambridge, and Associate Curator at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin.
Download or read book Unnerved written by Maud Page and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Queensland Art Gallery presents UNNERVED: THE NEW ZEALAND PROJECT, the second in a series of country-specific exhibition projects focusing on its contemporary collections. Since the 1990s, the Gallery's holdings of contemporary work from New Zealand have grown rapidly, partly through increased awareness and interest in the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art exhibitions. UNNERVED, and its accompanying publication, explores a particularly rich dark vein that recurs in New Zealand contemporary art and cinema. Psychological or physical unease pervades many works in the exhibition, with humour, parody and poetic subtlety among the strategies used by artists across generations and genres. Major sculptures by Michael Parekowhai, installations by Lisa Reihana and Michael Stevenson and photographic series by Yvonne Todd, Anne Noble and Greg Semu feature alongside video art by Sriwhana Spong and Nathan Pohio. The exhibition is accompanied by the film program, New Zealand Noir.

Book Synopsis Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment by : National Research Council
Download or read book Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. Arctic waters north of the Bering Strait and west of the Canadian border encompass a vast area that is usually ice covered for much of the year, but is increasingly experiencing longer periods and larger areas of open water due to climate change. Sparsely inhabited with a wide variety of ecosystems found nowhere else, this region is vulnerable to damage from human activities. As oil and gas, shipping, and tourism activities increase, the possibilities of an oil spill also increase. How can we best prepare to respond to such an event in this challenging environment? Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment reviews the current state of the science regarding oil spill response and environmental assessment in the Arctic region north of the Bering Strait, with emphasis on the potential impacts in U.S. waters. This report describes the unique ecosystems and environment of the Arctic and makes recommendations to provide an effective response effort in these challenging conditions. According to Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment, a full range of proven oil spill response technologies is needed in order to minimize the impacts on people and sensitive ecosystems. This report identifies key oil spill research priorities, critical data and monitoring needs, mitigation strategies, and important operational and logistical issues. The Arctic acts as an integrating, regulating, and mediating component of the physical, atmospheric and cryospheric systems that govern life on Earth. Not only does the Arctic serve as regulator of many of the Earth's large-scale systems and processes, but it is also an area where choices made have substantial impact on life and choices everywhere on planet Earth. This report's recommendations will assist environmentalists, industry, state and local policymakers, and anyone interested in the future of this special region to preserve and protect it from damaging oil spills.
Book Synopsis Demographic Engineering: Population Strategies in Ethnic Conflict by : Paul Morland
Download or read book Demographic Engineering: Population Strategies in Ethnic Conflict written by Paul Morland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demography has always mattered in conflict, but with conflict increasingly of an inter-ethnic nature, with sharper demographic differences between ethnic groups and with the spread of democracy, numbers count in conflict now more than ever. This book argues for and develops a framework for demographic engineering which provides a fresh perspective for looking at political events in countries where ethnicity matters. It asks how policies have been framed and implemented to change the demography of ethnic groups on the ground in their own interests. It also examines how successful these policies have been, focusing on the cases of Sri Lanka, Israel/Palestine, Northern Ireland and the USA. Often these policies are hidden but author Paul Morland teases them out with skill both from the statistics and documentary records and through conversations with participants. Offering a new way of thinking about demographic engineering (’hard demography’ versus ’soft demography’) and how ethnic groups in conflict deploy demographic strategies, this book will have a broad appeal to demographers, geographers and political scientists.
