Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the politics of social, cultural and political recognition of caste groups in North India. It explores the factors that make some castes politically influential, while others continue to remain socially and economically marginalized. The author situates these groups within democracy and utilizes a multicultural framework to understand why and when various castes have sought to achieve recognition and redistributive justice; to what extent different castes have been able to achieve these goals; and how civil society has engaged with these issues. Unlike dominant discourses on caste and democracy, which give primacy to electoral/procedural democracy over the substantive one, this book views the relationship between castes and the state in both dimensions of democracy. An important addition to the study of caste politics in India, the volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of social exclusion, development studies, minority studies, sociology and social policy, politics, and South Asian studies. It will also be of importance to politicians, policy makers, and civil society activists.

Book excerpt: The Current Accounts Of The History Of Civilization Do Not Generally Appear To Give Adequate Importance To Non-Western Civilizations. Works Like Needham'S Science And Civilization In China Are Rare. The Accounts Of Indic Civilization On The Other Hand Have Either Neglected The Factor Of Civilizational Contacts Or Represented Them In An Inadequate Manner. Few Serious Attempts Have Been Made To Gain An Insight Into Human Civilization Through The Comparative Historical And Integrated Studies In All Its Aspects. Historical Research Necessarily Tied To The Study Of The Source Material Is Still In The Process Of Rising To The Level Of Universal History. The Present Volume, Is Intended To Review The History Of Sicence, Philosophy And Culture In Indian Civilization In The Context Of Civilizational Contacts With Iranic, Semitic And Hellenic Worlds And Comparable Developments In Them. The Volume Is Divided Into Four Sections: Proto-Historic People And Language, Social And Technological Foundations Of Civilization, The Most Ancient Indian Religious Traditions And Birth And Rise Of Science And Philosophy. The Focus Of The Present Volume Is On Science, Philosophy And Culture, And Not On Political History Or Merely Regional And Epochal Developments. It Is Not Intended To Give In This Volume A General History Of Civilizations Between India And Mediterranean World But Is Intended To Highlight How Contributions Were Made To The Common Human Quest Of Truth, Goodness And Beauty Under Varying Conditions And Wide Ranging Contacts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert G. Gregory challenges the apparent assumption that non-Western peoples lack a significant indigenous philanthropic culture. Focusing on the large South Asian community in East Africa, he relates how, over a century, they built a philanthropic culture of great magnitude, and how it finally collapsed under the ascendency of increasing state regulation and policies directed against non-African communities.Compelled by poverty to seek better oppurtunities overseas, most Asians arrived in East Africa as peasant farmers. Denied access to productive land and sensing economic opportunity, they turned to business. Despite severe forms of racial discrimination in the colonial society, they suffered few restrictions on their business enterprises and some became very wealthy. Gregory's historical analysis shows philanthropy as an important contribution, one that stemmed from deep roots in Hindu, Muslim, and Buddhist culture. The sense of nonracial social responsibility cultivated social, medical, and educational facilities designed for all. This age of philanthropy terminated with the Asian exodus. The socialist and racial policies adopted by East African governments over the past few decades have virtually destroyed the foundation necessary for philanthropy as well as the distinct Asian cultural identity. Gregory's account of the East Asian's role in philanthropy deserves great attention and sober reflection.
