Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of inspirational poems about faith, hope and love may be used as praises, including sung praises. They celebrate life and its challenges, searching for why in the times of trouble, grief, nostalgia, joy and peace that come with surrendering to God. They also give thanks to God for always being there despite our imperfect nature as His children. One of their characteristics is the writers consciousness of the limited time and seasons of Gods creation versus the eternity of God the Creatorthe transient state of the world versus the unchanging nature of God. The writer combines lyric poetry with a modern approach that is flexible in terms of form, rhyme and rhythm. It is influenced by tonal language, a rhythm used for centuries in sub-Saharan Africa, China, Vietnam and a great part of Eastern Europe. Their focus on spiritual and religious themes portrays the writers feelings, state of mind, and perception and, as such, may touch the emotions of its readers who can personally relate with the words of the poems or with the lyrics of the songs.

Book excerpt: How often have you been driving, say on a cross-country trip, and have flashed by a sign that says, "Historical Marker, 1 mile?" How often have you stopped to read the sign? How often have you wondered what you would have discovered if you had stopped? Well, if you're like me, the answers are: often, almost never, and almost always. There never seems to be time, the markers, although announced, can be hard to find, and then there's the question of where to park and how to get from the car to the marker and back safely. One doubts that it's worthwhile. But yet there's that nagging feeling that maybe it would be fascinating. This book is a sampling of two hundred eighty four of the thousands of real-life historical markers that exist on our roads and highways. Each is accompanied by detailed location information and by an expansion of the often-brief inscription. Writing it satisfied my curiosity. It's very likely it will satisfy yours too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades after the Civil War, sports slowly gained a prominent position within American culture. This development provided Jews with opportunities to participate in one of the few American cultures not closed off to them. Jewish athleticism challenged anti-Semitic depictions of Jews supposed physical inferiority while helping to construct a modern American Jewish identity. An Americanization narrative emerged that connected Jewish athleticism with full acceptance and integration into American society. This acceptance was not without struggle, but Jews succeeded and participated in the American sporting culture as athletes, coaches, owners, and fans. The diversity of topics in this volume reflect that the field of the history of American Jews and sports is growing and has moved beyond the need to overcome the idea that Jews are simply People of the Book. The contributions to this volume paint a broad picture of Jewish participation in sports, with essays written by respected historians who have examined specific sports, individuals, leagues, cities, and the impact of sport on Judaism. Despite the continued belief that Jewish religious or cultural identity remains somehow distinct from the American idea of the athlete, the volume demonstrates that American Jews have had a tremendous contribution to American sports and conversely, that sports have helped construct American Jewish culture and identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1987, the apartheid minister of law and order boasted that the security forces had crushed Umkhonto we Sizwe in the Western Cape. He could not have been more wrong. The Ashley Kriel Detachment, named after one of their slain comrades, conducted over thirty operations between late 1987 and early 1990, playing a crucial role in the defeat of an unjust system. In Voices from the Underground, eighteen members of the AKD give accounts of their involvement in the armed struggle. The book traces their varying journeys into MK, via student activism, trade unions, religious organisations and UDF politics. It details their training in Angola, Botswana, Tanzania, Cuba and South Africa, and their experiences of detention and interrogation. Members recall the stresses of couriering arms and explosives across police roadblocks, hiding in safe houses and evading capture. They talk about the operations they executed, the measures they took to avoid civilian casualties, and their responses to security breaches and the deaths of comrades in the line of duty. Above all, this is a book about people, showing the effects of apartheid on their lives, their reasons for joining the armed struggle, the challenges of surviving in the underground while raising children, and their experiences of returning to civilian life or, in some cases, integrating into the SANDF. Voices from the Underground gives a human face to ordinary people who took up arms to fight a violent state for the freedom of all South Africans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents more than 30 day hikes. Classic hikes, such as Rose River Loop and Whiteoak Canyon, are included. However, though the majority of these hikes are not as well known, they offer as much solitude and equally scenic sights––like Lost Cliffs and Furnace Mountain––as the more popular hikes. This will give you the opportunity to get back to nature on your own terms. Often, park sightseers randomly pick a hike without knowing where it will lead, or they follow the crowds wherever they go. Choosing a hike at random in Shenandoah, where many trails drop steeply off the Blue Ridge, may result in a rigorous return to the car with no rewards to show effort. Two types of day hikes are offered: one-way and loop hikes. One-way hikes lead to a particularly rewarding destination and return via the same trail. The return trip allows you to see everything from the opposite vantage point. You may notice more minute trailside features the second go-round, and returning at a different time of day may give the same trail a surprisingly different character. But to some, returning on the same trail just isn’t enjoyable. The loop hikes provide an alternative. Most of the hikes offer solitude to maximize your Shenandoah experience, although portions of some hikes traverse potentially popular areas. It should also be noted that loop hikes are generally longer and harder than one-way hikes, but a bigger challenge can reap bigger rewards. Day hiking is the best and most popular way to "break into" the Shenandoah wilderness. But for those with the inclination to see the mountain cycle from day to night and back again, this book offers ten overnight hikes with the best locales for camping. The length of these hikes–– three days and two nights––was chosen primarily for the weekend backpacker. Backpackers must follow park regulations and practice "leave no trace" wilderness-use etiquette. Each day and overnight hike contains four key elements to help readers plan and enjoy the perfect trip: • GPS-based trail maps • GPS-based elevation profiles • directions to the trailhead • trail descriptions Each trail description offers precise commentary on what to expect along the way and rates each hike for: • scenery • trail condition • difficulty • accessibility for children • solitude Designed to fit easily into a back pocket, this guide leads hikers and backpackers to sites of exceptional beauty and solitude.
