Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Monuments in Washington, DC is your guide to some of the US capital’s cool places to visit that extend way beyond power and politics. Travel writer Kate Armstrong covers all of the new hip locales, including H Street Corridor, 14th Street and Union Market District, and the hangouts of historic Georgetown and Dupont Circle. She offers a local’s take on where to go for great coffee, crafty cocktails, DC-centric shopping and superlative sights (these include the freebie 'must dos' around the Mall, such as the National Museum of the African American History and Culture, and the Library of Congress). There are fun, themed walking itineraries for U Street, old town Alexandria, and gardens and homes of Georgetown, plus three accessible daytrips to Mount Vernon, Richmond, and Gettysburg. There's so much to see and do in this under-rated city, and this book in the Curious Travel Guides series will add polish to your visit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Grief explores high-style funerary sculptures and their functions during the turn of the twentieth century. Many scholars have overlooked these monuments, viewing them as mere oddities, a part of an individual artist's oeuvre, a detail of a patron's biography, or local civic cemetery history. This volume considers them in terms of their wider context and shifting use as objects of consolation, power, and multisensory mystery and wonder. Art historian Cynthia Mills traces the stories of four families who memorialized their losses through sculpture. Henry Brooks Adams commissioned perhaps the most famous American cemetery monument of all, the Adams Memorial in Washington, D.C. The bronze figure was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who became the nation’s foremost sculptor. Another innovative bronze monument featured the Milmore brothers, who had worked together as sculptors in the Boston area. Artist Frank Duveneck composed a recumbent portrait of his wife following her early death in Paris; in Rome, the aging William Wetmore Story made an angel of grief his last work as a symbol of his sheer desolation after his wife’s death. Through these incredible monuments Mills explores questions like: Why did new forms--many of them now produced in bronze rather than stone and placed in architectural settings--arise just at this time, and how did they mesh or clash with the sensibilities of their era? Why was there a gap between the intention of these elite patrons and artists, whose lives were often intertwined in a closed circle, and the way some public audiences received them through the filter of the mass media? Beyond Grief traces the monuments' creation, influence, and reception in the hope that they will help us to understand the larger story: how survivors used cemetery memorials as a vehicle to mourn and remember, and how their meaning changed over time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes Washington, D.C., so attractive to so many people? Locals and visitors in the nation's capital may respond with a range of generic answers, but one top response will always be the great monuments. From Washington, D.C.'s historic beginnings in the 1790s, these prominent structures soon became an important identifying feature of the district and a way to preserve its past. This book examines a number of significant monuments, memorials, and historic sites through stunning black-and-white photographs spanning a century and a half. Historic Photos of Washington D.C. Monuments highlights chapter-by-chapter the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and other monuments receiving significantly less foot traffic--but ones that are no less significant. The memorialized figures, the architects and artists behind the structures, and captivating historical facts are further explored in accompanying captions. Each chapter also looks at historical events that took place at these monuments, including political rallies, civil rights demonstrations, and speeches given by those who helped shape the nation. It is hoped that readers of Washington D.C. Monuments--from D.C. residents and visitors to art enthusiasts, history buffs, and architecture lovers--will visit these hallowed places and see for themselves why people love Washington, D.C.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Washington, D.C. lives in our minds as museums and monuments, capitals and columns, but beyond the timeless monuments of white stone history thrives a city that has moved into the modern and postmodern age. In text and photos, this guide goes beyond the grand avenues to explore remarkable works of contemporary architecture that reinterpret historical styles and reconcile with Washington’s monumental plan. Contemporary Architecture in Washington, D.C. features more than 20 detailed maps and includes photographs of almost 300 buildings, from the waterfront in Georgetown to the town houses of Capitol Hill, from the luxurious residences of Bethesda to the towering office buildings of Crystal City. As a national capital, Washington is a showplace for the best and the latest works by internationally recognized modern masters and talented local firms as well. Beyond buildings, Contemporary Architecture in Washington, D.C. explores new communities and developments in the Washington suburbs and in essays examines the particular forces of style, politics, economics, and history that have come together to form the American capital. Washington is a city of metaphor. From its very streets, the city speaks of democracy and nationhood. The impact of these metaphors comes from a repeated architectural language that is constantly being rewritten to reflect history and our interpretation of it."--back cover
