Book excerpt: An exhaustive and unforgettable portrait of India's greatest and most respected industrialist. Written with J.R.D. Tata's co-operation, this superb biography tells the J.R.D. story from his birth to 1993, the year in which he died in Switzerland. The book is divided into four parts: Part I deals with the early years, from J.R.D's birth in France in 1904 to his accession to the chairmanship of Tatas, India's largest industrial conglomerate, at the age of thirty-four; Part II looks at his forty-six years in Indian aviation (the lasting passion of J.R.D's life) which led to the initiation of the Indian aviation industry and its development into one of India's success stories; Part III illuminates his half-century-long stint as the outstanding personality of Indian industry; and Part IV unearths hitherto unknown details about the private man and the public figure, including glimpses of his long friendships with such people as Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and his association with celebrities in India and abroad.

Book excerpt: Beyond the Blue Ridge is the Odyssey of an early 70's young woman battling social and professional bias while struggling financially. The novel follows Chlo Adams for thirty years beginning in the early 1970's where racial and gender divides erupted to the point at which they affected those who were eager for change as well as those who were not. The backdrop of the Vietnam War, Nixon, Women's Liberation, Black Power threatened to disrupt national stability. College students were often involved in demonstrations, many young women joined Consciousness Raising Groups (CR groups) because they realized that they had been socially programmed to be subservient. Ordinary young adults had to navigate the changes if they expected to live an "ordinary" family life that came close to what their parents and their parents' parents had lived. This novel was first written in 1987 and put to sleep, so to speak, until now.In the 1970's and into the 1980's, if a woman's boss found out that she was living with a man she was not married to, she would be fired. Now it's standard practice for couples to live together before they marry, and even to buy houses before marrying. The concept of a child born out of wedlock being a bastard is not thought of. In terms of the rate at which social mores have historically changed, this upheaval occurred at lightning speed and those caught in the raging rivers had to navigate them without a guide.

Book excerpt: The true story of the construction of the historic Crozet railroad tunnel—as seen through the eyes of three Irish immigrant families who helped build it. In one of the greatest engineering feats of the time, Claudius Crozet led the completion of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Tunnel in 1858. More than a century and a half later, the tunnel stands as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, but the stories and lives of those who built it are the true lasting triumph. Irish immigrants fleeing the Great Hunger poured into America resolved to find something to call their own. They would persevere through life in overcrowded shanties and years of blasting through rock to see the tunnel to completion. In this intriguing history, Mary E. Lyons follows three Irish families in their struggle to build Crozet’s famed tunnel—and their American dream. Includes photos and illustrations
