Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Book excerpt: How do you cope when facing life-threatening illness, family conflict, faltering relationships, old trauma, obsessive thinking, overwhelming emotion, or inevitable loss? If you’re like most people, chances are you react with fear and confusion, falling back on timeworn strategies: anger, self-judgment, and addictive behaviors. Though these old, conditioned attempts to control our life may offer fleeting relief, ultimately they leave us feeling isolated and mired in pain. There is another way. Beneath the turbulence of our thoughts and emotions exists a profound stillness, a silent awareness capable of limitless love. Tara Brach, author of the award-winning Radical Acceptance, calls this awareness our true refuge, because it is available to every one of us, at any moment, no exceptions. In this book, Brach offers a practical guide to finding our inner sanctuary of peace and wisdom in the midst of difficulty. Based on a fresh interpretation of the three classic Buddhist gateways to freedom—truth, love, and awareness—True Refuge shows us the way not just to heal our suffering, but also to cultivate our capacity for genuine happiness. Through spiritual teachings, guided meditations, and inspirational stories of people who discovered loving presence during times of great struggle, Brach invites us to connect more deeply with our own inner life, one another, and the world around us. True Refuge is essential reading for anyone encountering hardship or crisis, anyone dedicated to a path of spiritual awakening. The book reminds us of our own innate intelligence and goodness, making possible an enduring trust in ourselves and our lives. We realize that what we seek is within us, and regardless of circumstances, “there is always a way to take refuge in a healing and liberating presence.” Praise for True Refuge “Drawing on the latest findings in neuroscience as well as ten more years of personal experience on the path of awakening, Tara Brach’s superb second book brings readers ever more deeply in touch with our true nature. This book is a precious gift, filled with insight, shared from heart to heart.”—Thich Nhat Hanh “True Refuge is a magnificent work of heart. For anyone interested in developing a deeper understanding of the mind and how to improve the quality of their life, this book offers unique insights and easily learned practices that literally can transform your life’s path. Read, explore, and enjoy!”—Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., author of No-Drama Discipline

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In much the same way that a cluttered home can stop you from living your best life, it can also sabotage your best efforts at controlling your weight. Most people who diet don't just go on one diet and succeed; they go on three or five or ten. And for most people, the diets fail because most diets are only about losing weight - they don't drill down into why you are carrying that weight around and why you want to lose it. In his years as a professional organiser, Walsh found time and time again that people hid their real problems behind their "stuff." Peter believes that the secret to understanding how you got here and how to fix it all starts with one simple question: "Are you living the life you imagined?" Weight loss is much simpler when you can focus not on the excess baggage of the kilos, but on how your weight is holding you back from being the person of your dreams. Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat?will show you how to redefine your relationship to what you own and consume, and in so doing, redefine how you live your life. Once you understand the reasons behind the clutter and chaos in your home and your eating habits, you can take control of your kitchen, your pantry and your refrigerator to achieve a healthy balance. Often a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Peter Walsh is also the author of the New York Timesbestseller It's All Too Much.

Book excerpt: Life is a battleground. Every single one of us will face difficult times. It is war! And the war is intense. Challenges and hurdles are part of everyday life. Problems and difficulties are companies of every human being. It is a fact that, as long as we are walking through this journey called life, we are bound to face challenges and fight battles. It is the fight to win the battles, overcome the challenges and crossover the obstacles that leave us journeying through life with a dysfunctional and skewed mindset. When we encounter painful experiences, the pain sinks deep into the brain. When this happens, the painful memories outweigh the happy memories in the vortex of the mind. This book is written to help you know that through the transformation of the mind, you have the power in your hands to turn your circumstances around for your good. It’s all in the mind and our mindset is everything. Our brains are programmed to think in a certain way and we as human beings have the power to reprogram our mind to think the way we want it to think, break out of mental imprisonment, win the battles of the mind and ultimately become success conscious.

When moments pass in our lives and we realize that our lives mismatch the life we imagined in our past, its better we change our current choices, decisions, and dreams so that we can enjoy better life in future because everything you are doing now reflects your life in the future. We reap what we sow. Successful life is never a mere hoping and wishing, but it’s about active doing, active determination, and active becoming by sowing meaningful big dreams and investments today to get meaningful life tomorrow. Becoming successful is not limited to age, location or education. It is only limited to ‘I won’t’. Success depends on principles and positive use of your brain. The human brain including yours are the storehouse of all the magic we need to heal all the wounds of unsuccessful lives in our world. Just change your altitude and take first step to begin something now and you will enjoy success as J. K. Rowling said “We do not need magic to transform our world. We carry all of the powers we need inside ourselves already”. It’s never too late, too young or too old to begin planning your future from now and get started all over by dreaming newer goals and possibilities today for a better future. Officer Ackah, using practical examples, prompts readers that the great technological and infrastructural advancements and positions in the United States and elsewhere did not magically fall from the sky, but they were created by the positive application of the minds of ordinary people like you. This book helps you to change your altitudes, thinking and get started to create unimaginable successes, advancements and positions in our world to place you on top, and you will become the topic of remembrance. Officer Ackah, speaking from personal experiences of victory and success from both the civilian and military points, has provided the positive, passionate, practical and possible principles to arouse your appetite for creating unbelievable successes to change your life exceptionally and to effect inimitably the transformation of our world. Gaddiel R Ackah is encouraging readers in finding freedom in their lives to overcome the three mistakes that block successful living; fear to identify one’s purposes in life, ignorant of how powerful their brain can work to change things and the misunderstanding of creating desirable successes. He prompts that you are not living to tiptoe and die but to achieve your dreams by your positive and courageous daily choices and investments. When life is not okay, but you are struggling in life, this book is for you to reexamine and change your goal, job title, and social status. 2 2

Download or read book Lost in Transition written by Christian Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life for emerging adults is vastly different today than it was for their counterparts even a generation ago. Young people are waiting longer to marry, to have children, and to choose a career direction. As a result, they enjoy more freedom, opportunities, and personal growth than ever before. But the transition to adulthood is also more complex, disjointed, and confusing. In Lost in Transition, Christian Smith and his collaborators draw on 230 in-depth interviews with a broad cross-section of emerging adults (ages 18-23) to investigate the difficulties young people face today, the underlying causes of those difficulties, and the consequences both for individuals and for American society as a whole. Rampant consumer capitalism, ongoing failures in education, hyper-individualism, postmodernist moral relativism, and other aspects of American culture are all contributing to the chaotic terrain that emerging adults must cross. Smith identifies five major problems facing very many young people today: confused moral reasoning, routine intoxication, materialistic life goals, regrettable sexual experiences, and disengagement from civic and political life. The trouble does not lie only with the emerging adults or their poor individual decisions but has much deeper roots in mainstream American culture--a culture which emerging adults have largely inherited rather than created. Older adults, Smith argues, must recognize that much of the responsibility for the pain and confusion young people face lies with them. Rejecting both sky-is-falling alarmism on the one hand and complacent disregard on the other, Smith suggests the need for what he calls "realistic concern"--and a reconsideration of our cultural priorities and practices--that will help emerging adults more skillfully engage unique challenges they face. Even-handed, engagingly written, and based on comprehensive research, Lost in Transition brings much needed attention to the darker side of the transition to adulthood.
