Book excerpt: Doubling as a history and music appreciation course, each volume of the Beyond Salsa Bass series is significantly longer than the corresponding volume of Beyond Salsa Piano. At 440 pages, Beyond Salsa Bass Vol. 3 is by far the longest of the 26 Beyond Salsa books and the first to extensively cover New York and Puerto Rican salsa and pre-salsa as well as Latin jazz. Its audio product (separate purchase) has 616 tracks (a generous selection of 60 free audio tracks is also available by download). The book includes a bass tumbao for every piano tumbao in each of Volumes 3 and 4 of the Beyond Salsa Piano series, but it also includes hundreds of bass tumbaos from and historical analyses of areas of Latin music not covered in the piano series: Puerto Rico, New York, Latin Jazz, the Cuban descargas and additional aspects of the Cuban music of 1959-1989, i.e., from the Cuban Revolution to the Fall of the Berlin Wall. In addition to exercises in music notation, the bass series delves far more deeply into history and the biographies and discographies of individual artists than either the piano or percussion series. The bass series could be thought of as a thorough general history of Latin popular music, told from the perspective of the bass student.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (book only - audio files are a separate downloadable purchase - the book also contains a link to a smaller free download of audio files)THIS BOOK: Beyond Salsa Bass, Vol. 2 covers the same period as Beyond Salsa Piano, Vol. 2 - Cuba from 1940-1959, aka, the "golden age of Cuban music". After a theoretical chapter covering clave alignment and rhythmic breaks, or cierres, the second chapter, over 100 pages, is devoted to the bass tumbaos and cierres of Arsenio Rodríguez. Chapter 3 is on the great bassist Cachao López and the final chapter covers the multitude of great Cuban artists of the 1950s: Beny Moré, Celia Cruz, Orquesta Aragón, José Fajardo, et al.THE BEYOND SALSA SERIES: The Beyond Salsa Bass series is designed to be used either as a stand-alone bass course, or as a companion series to Beyond Salsa Piano, enabling you to practice each exercise along with a friend or band member who plays piano. There's a corresponding bass tumbao for every piano tumbao covered in our sister series. That said, each bass series book is much longer than its piano counterpart, and quite a bit more ambitious, especially the first four volumes. There are many additional tumbaos and several chapters of conceptual exercises that go beyond the piano books. Music history and music theory are also given significantly more space and attention in the bass series. Volumes 1 and 2 match up almost perfectly, except that the bass series adds an extensive additional section on Arsenio Rodríguez and son montuno in Volume 2 (this one). Volumes 3 and 4 of the piano series are combined in Volume 3 of the bass series, which also has a section on salsa and pre-salsa music of Puerto Rico and New York. Salsa was not covered in the piano series, as salsa piano has already been thoroughly covered by Rebeca Mauleón in her Salsa Guidebook and 101 Montunos. The bass series covers timba in two volumes instead of one because the bass plays such a pivotal role in the rhythm section gears. Individual Artists: From Volume 6 onward, each volume of each series is devoted to the style of one musician. These volumes have their own philosophy and game plan: * Find the very best musicians. As of this writing, the bass series includes Alain Pérez and the piano series includes Melón Lewis, Pupy Pedroso and Tirso Duarte.* Avoid asking the musicians to self-analyze or participate in the pedagogic process any more than necessary.* On a case-by-case basis, find the most natural way to capture each musician doing what he or she does on recordings and at concerts.* Convert these captured performances - whether MIDI, audio, or video - into bite-size exercises that can be easily studied, understood and assimilated by a non-Cuban musician.* Never ask the reader to learn an exercise without demonstrating exactly how it relates to a given genre, band, song or the style of a specific musician.Volumes 6-9 of each series are directly linked because their subjects - Melón Lewis (piano) and Alain Pérez (bass) - played side-by-side in the legendary 1996-1998 Issac Delgado Group. Each is arguably the greatest player of the timba era on his respective instrument. The songs covered are identical (until Volume 9) and the video products include the two musicians playing along with each other. Melón's tumbaos are also present in one channel of the audio tracks for the Alain Pérez books.

Book excerpt: Volume 6 of Beyond Salsa Bass begins our 4-volume study of the style of Alain Pérez - the composer of La sandunguita, Salsa timba y amor, and Amigo Juan. Pérez is one of the most talented bassists, composers and arrangers of modern Cuban music. He shared a very unique musical chemistry with Issac Delgado and pianist Melón Lewis, the subject of Volumes 6-9 of Beyond Salsa Piano. The bass series follows the piano series exactly, covering the same songs, now from the perspective of the bassist. In addition to transcribing the notes, we also transcribe the percussive sounds that he uses to create his funky style. Each musical example is provided in 16th note notation, 8th note notion and bass tablature. There are corresponding audio and video products for each volume.

Book excerpt: This book presents an encyclopedic selection of all the basic rhythm parts used on timbales and drums in Latin music (salsa, timba, Afro-Cuban folkloric rhythms, rumba, danzón, chachachá et al). The central premise is for the student to master each rhythm by singing and tapping before attempting to play it on an instrument, so as to avoid bad habits of technique during the critical period when the rhythm is being memorized and internalized. To accommodate as many learning styles as possible, each rhythm is presented in eight ways: two types of standard notation, two types of graphic or "box" notation, full speed audio, slow motion audio, and two speeds using a special "task-by-task" learning method where the rhythm is learned one stroke at a time against a steady rhythmic accompaniment. Each rhythm is first presented as a single part in its historical context and then in the combinations of two and three parts at once that a percussionist would be expected to play in various group situations. One group of audio files (107 tracks) is available as a free online download, with the link provided in the book. The remainder (the more advanced files) are available as a separate downloadable product. The book will also be useful for those who can already play drums and timbales but need to quickly learn the necessary rhythms for salsa and timba, but for true beginners, our strategy is to learn to sing and tap all of the basic rhythms before taking your first lesson and there's a very important reason for doing it this way: As with golf or tennis lessons, learning to play a musical instrument is about physical movements, dexterity, timing, coordination and body language - the types of things that are easier to demonstrate than to explain and are easier to master when your brain stays calmly out of the way as your body goes through the learning process. If your brain is struggling to learn what to play, it interferes with your body's natural ability to learn how to play. To put it another way, if you're concentrating on mastering the pattern of a new rhythm, you won't be able to give 100% of your effort to tone production, posture, hand position, and feeling the groove, and you're likely to develop "bad habits" that are hard to unlearn later. But if you've already learned to sing, clap and tap the rhythms before you take your first lesson on drums or timbales, you'll be much more likely to succeed, and - just as important - you'll be much more likely to enjoy the process.

Book excerpt: "A wonderful book. Sam Bardfeld's approach to teaching soloing along with being able to listen to examples of the masters of Afro-Cuban style on the violin sparked new and creative ideas in me. He presents a huge amount of material in a way that seems fun and lets you dive right in." - Regina Carter, jazz violinist and MacArthur "Genius" Award recipient"It's very satisfying that Sam Bardfeld's contribution to the texts on Latin music comes out of the gate so strongly. The historical context is wonderful, the information about the overall structure of the music is invaluable and a great place for the violinist to start, and the transcriptions are beautiful. Congratulations on a wonderful project that is going to fill a vacuum that is vast and fill it completely. I see no reason for there ever to be another book besides this one on Latin violin playing." - Matt Glaser, violinist, Chairman Emeritus, Strings Department, Berklee College of Music"This book is a welcome addition to the growing number of texts on Afro-Cuban based music. Sam opens the door for all violinists (and all instrumentalists) to this incredibly rich tradition in a clear, concise manner with a great deal of respect for its history. I recommend it highly." - Bobby Sanabria, 8x Grammy Nominee, percussionist, bandleader and educator"A very useful book for the violinist who wants to begin to understand the complexities and intricacies of Latin jazz music." - Mark Feldman, jazz violinist, composer, recording artist.Originally published in 2001, Sam Bardfeld's book Latin Violin is considered one of the classics of the creative/alternative strings literature. It's been out of print since 2014 and is finally getting re-released as an eBook. The music on the original accompanying CD can be accessed via a download link provided in the book. Latin Violin is useful for both professional and student violinists who want to learn something about playing violin in the Afro-Cuban tradition (aka "salsa" or "Latin music"). The book is in four sections and covers an historical overview of the role of the violin in Afro-Cuban music; how the music works; transcriptions and analyses of solos by the seminal violinists in the Afro-Cuban tradition; and an outline of the music featured on the accompanying CD. The CD includes famous Afro-Cuban violin solos and an extended play-along session. "Salsa, and Latin music in general, have been exploding in popularity since the late seventies and show no sign of slowing down. The violin has filled an intriguing role in this kind of music, and there are many great opportunities for string players playing this style, but there has been very little documentation on the style up until this book. One of the great things about the book is its powerful approach to context: Bardfeld managed to get the rights to important recordings of some of the originators of the style, and included them in a CD recording with the book. Historical information and painstakingly accurate transcriptions of those solos complete the picture. Discussions of Clave and other important features of Latin music make this book a must for any serious violinist, professional or amateur." - Darol Anger, violinist, educator, recording artist

Book excerpt: Covering a span of time and styles ranging from jazz beginnings to some of the most recent developments, this book collects and analyzes many of the most frequently used jazz, blues, and Latin jazz left-hand piano techniques. Generally, each proposed technique is first introduced by a "model" figure derived from original sources, followed by an explanation of its pattern, and finally by some sample applications using well-known songs, harmonic progressions, or original pieces. For the sake of completeness, most of these left-hand applications are integrated with sample right-hand parts that validate the efficacy and concrete application of the left hand figures. Numerous styles of jazz piano are taught, including: stride piano, Latin stylings, blues, boogie, swing, walking bass, jazz waltz, rootless voicings and many other concepts. Characteristics of jazz legends including Erroll Garner, Jelly Roll Morton, Earl Hines, George Gershwin, Fats Waller, Eubie Blake and many others are explored. As with all books in this series, it includes a unique lay-flat binding to help keep the music open on the music stand.
