Download or read book Beyond Fair Trade written by Mark Pendergrast and published by Greystone Books Ltd. This book was released on 2015 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What does compassionate capitalism look like? Mark Pendergrast shows us in this enlightening story of tribal life, opium, missionaries, market trends, a Thai antiques dealer, a mining entrepreneur and coffee." Abigail Carroll, author of Three Squares: The Invention of the American Meal The Akha hill tribe of Thailand has a long, tumultuous history. Politics, economics, violence, prejudice, and deforestation consistently worked against the Akha's desire to move away from their dependency on opium production and create a stable future for their children. That all changed in 2006 when prominent businessman John Darch met entrepreneur Wicha Promyong. Their meeting resulted in the establishment of an equal partnership business venture that goes beyond Fair Trade: the Doi Chaang Coffee Company. Beyond Fair Trade tells the story of the growth of this unique partnership, its successes and challenges, and the people behind it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A racy book based on the personal experiences of a retired soldier seeking to find what lies beyond the perceptible universe. Various life-threatening experiences came his way, where he survived by a few centimetres accurate firing from the air, artillery, tanks, and machine guns. Even after retirement, he’s had narrow escapes on air, water and land. Numerous other experiences, where the improbable wishes were fulfilled extraordinarily; prophesies made accurate to the last letter and date; clairvoyants who could peep into the long-dead past and the misty future, warning in advance to face the disasters stoically; and many more, compelled him to look beyond and make conjectures based on the findings of the Modern Science and the revelations of the Vedanta. Some truths beyond controlling and regulating the perceptible universe have emerged out; perhaps? Read Empirical Universe and Beyond to find out.

Book excerpt: The slave market in Seville, while still relatively small, became one of the most active in Europe. Many called the city the 'New Babylon.' Northern and sub-Saharan Africans comprised more than 50 percent of the inhabitants of several of Seville's neighborhoods. The African populations became so socially and politically important that in 1475 the Crown appointed Juan de Valladolid, its royal servant and mayoral, to represent Seville's Afro-Iberian community. Churches and charities catered to its spiritual and material needs.

Book excerpt: Studies on druidry, Jungian psychology, politics, history and the time ahead In 2003 John Michael Greer became the seventh Grand Archdruid of the Ancient Order of Druids in America (AODA), an initiatory organization teaching Celtic nature spirituality which was founded in 1912. The outcome was that his writings began to stray into territory very far from the Hermetic occult philosophy that had been the previous focus of his career. The essays included in this volume chronicle some of the themes he explored as a result: Druidry, Jungian psychology, politics, history, and the shape of the future in a society in decline.

Download or read book Beyond Expulsion written by Debra Kaplan and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-26 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Expulsion is a history of Jewish-Christian interactions in early modern Strasbourg, a city from which the Jews had been expelled and banned from residence in the late fourteenth century. This study shows that the Jews who remained in the Alsatian countryside continued to maintain relationships with the city and its residents in the ensuing period. During most of the sixteenth century, Jews entered Strasbourg on a daily basis, where they participated in the city's markets, litigated in its courts, and shared their knowledge of Hebrew and Judaica with Protestant Reformers. By the end of the sixteenth century, Strasbourg became an increasingly orthodox Lutheran city, and city magistrates and religious leaders sought to curtail contact between Jews and Christians. This book unearths the active Jewish participation in early modern society, traces the impact of the Reformation on local Jews, discusses the meaning of tolerance, and describes the shifting boundaries that divided Jewish and Christian communities.
