Book excerpt: The novel is set in the period marked by the youth protest of the late 60s, more precisely in the hippie and drug movement, which was part of this also international youth revolt. The main character of the story is named Tobias. He joins this youth protest and gets involved in the drug and hippie movement around 1970, moves into a rural commune, gains experience in "free love," consumes and deals psychoactive drugs, especially hashish, sometimes also LSD. Tobias meets the attractive Nina. She injects herself with heroin. Tobias enters into a liaison with her, and the two decide to take a trip together to Afghanistan, India, Nepal, and Goa. Nina manages to stop injecting heroin before they leave. Overland, with stops in Istanbul, southern Turkey, and Afghanistan, among other places, the two arrive in India. There, after a short stay in Amritsar, the couple is first drawn to Kashmir, where they make the acquaintance of a few Indian begging monks called sadhus. At their invitation, they accompany them to a remote and paradisiacal Himalayan valley. There they witness the passing and burial of a wise Hindu guru. They then travel on via Delhi, the Taj Mahal, and Varanasi to Kathmandu in Nepal. On the way, Tobias becomes seriously ill with a fever, but recovers. After their stay in Nepal, the journey takes them via Surat and Bombay to Goa. They stay in the hippie commune there for a few months until Nina becomes pregnant and they both decide to return to Europe. Again via Delhi and Amritsar, they reach Peshawar and then Kabul. A side trip to Bamiyan and the lakes of Band-e-Amir is made. They take some dope with them and smuggle it across the Afghan-Persian and subsequent borders. Once back in Europe, a stop is made first in Istanbul and then in Dubrovnik. In Dubrovnik, they meet a traveling street juggler originally of Czech descent. Nina suffers a miscarriage. She and Tobias return to Germany via Italy. In Germany, they learn that their old house-sharing community no longer exists and that many of their former companions have left the movement which as a whole is showing signs of disintegration. The paths of Nina and Tobias then separate, at first tentatively, and they look around for a new way to live.

Book excerpt: Who has not at least once in his lifetime asked himself, “What is this thing called ‘life’?” “What does it mean to ‘be’?” “How and why do we ‘live’?” “What is this great and sinister unknown, ‘death’?” An instant of meditative stargazing may prompt any of these questions. The purpose of this work is very broad and ambitious. Any effort aimed at trying to peer into the Great Unknown, the far-bidding realm of transcendentalism (if it exists), is bound to be fraught with “absurdities” and “improbabilities,” to be “fantastic” here and there, to be “ridiculous” as a whole. This book could be all that, and more, if it were offered as more than an attempt to merely exemplify what the basic concepts may or possibly could entail and to develop a philosophic view as timeless, as fundamentally unchangeable, as the universe with which it deals. As a logical beginning the author takes a close look at “existence” followed by “life,” which cannot be independent of it and with which it is really inextricably alloyed. As it ends things for us on earth, so too will “death” end this discourse. The knell will be not so much a dirge as it will be a harmonious synthesis of a grand unity—the undissectible fusion of death, life, and existence into an inscrutable scheme that might be cogent and imposing enough to cause one to look beyond his idols and icons for the essence of his being and his non-being.

Book excerpt: Beyond Limits is the autobiography of Steve McClure, one of the world's top rock climbers. From his childhood encounters with the sandstone outcrops of the North York Moors right up to his cutting-edge first ascents such as Overshadow (F9a+) at Malham and Mutation (F9a) at Raven Tor, Steve explores his deep passion for climbing and how it has dictated and shaped his life. Introduced to climbing by his parents at an early age, Steve quickly progressed as a climber, developing a fascination with movement and technical difficulty. Rapidly reaching a high standard, Steve became torn between the desire to climb increasingly bold routes and his hesitant approach to danger, with a series of close calls forcing him to seriously question his motivations. Searching for a balance between risk and reward, he struggled to find his place as a climber. Having dropped out of the scene, a chance encounter led to his discovery of sport climbing. Free from fear, Steve plunged headlong into this new style and surged through the grades. Pushing everything else aside, he allowed climbing to take over his life. He reached world-class levels of performance, but once again found himself searching for a balance between risk and reward, yet this time the risk was of losing what is truly important in life. As he searches for what really makes him tick, his climbing comes full circle and returns to where it started - climbing for the love of it. Beyond Limits is the story of a climber and his obsessive exploration of the sport, of finding a true passion, taking it to the limits and attempting to delicately balance this passion against other aspects of life to give the greatest rewards.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this collection is to guide the non-specialist through the basic theory of various generalizations of topology, starting with clear motivations for their introduction. Structures considered include closure spaces, convergence spaces, proximity spaces, quasi-uniform spaces, merotopic spaces, nearness and filter spaces, semi-uniform convergence spaces, and approach spaces. Each chapter is self-contained and accessible to the graduate student, and focuses on motivations to introduce the generalization of topologies considered, presenting examples where desirable properties are not present in the realm of topologies and the problem is remedied in the more general context. Then, enough material will be covered to prepare the reader for more advanced papers on the topic. While category theory is not the focus of the book, it is a convenient language to study these structures and, while kept as a tool rather than an object of study, will be used throughout the book. For this reason, the book contains an introductory chapter on categorical topology.

It recounts the unique odyssey of a noted mathematician who overcame military hurdles at West Point, Army Ranger School and the Vietnam War, and survived many civilian escapades—hitchhiking in third-world hotspots, fending off sharks in Bahamian reefs, and camping deep behind the forbidding Iron Curtain. From ultra-conservative West Point in the ’60s to ultra-radical Berkeley in the ’70s, and ultimately to genteel Georgia Tech in the ’80s, this is the tale of an academic career as noteworthy for its offbeat adventures as for its teaching and research accomplishments. It brings to life the struggles and risks underlying mathematical research, the unparalleled thrill of making scientific breakthroughs, and the joy of sharing those discoveries around the world. Hill's book is packed with energy, humor, and suspense, both physical and intellectual. Anyone who is curious about how one maverick mathematician thinks, who wants to relive the zanier side of the ’60s and ’70s, who wants an armchair journey into the third world, or who seeks an unconventional view of several of society's iconic institutions, will be drawn to this book.

Book excerpt: A mind-bending excursion to the limits of science and mathematics Are some scientific problems insoluble? In Beyond Reason, internationally acclaimed math and science author A. K. Dewdney answers this question by examining eight insurmountable mathematical and scientific roadblocks that have stumped thinkers across the centuries, from ancient mathematical conundrums such as "squaring the circle," first attempted by the Pythagoreans, to G?del's vexing theorem, from perpetual motion to the upredictable behavior of chaotic systems such as the weather. A. K. Dewdney, PhD (Ontario, Canada), was the author of Scientific American's "Computer Recreations" column for eight years. He has written several critically acclaimed popular math and science books, including A Mathematical Mystery Tour (0-471-40734-8); Yes, We Have No Neutrons (0-471-29586-8); and 200% of Nothing (0-471-14574-2).

Book excerpt: SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2017 ROYAL SOCIETY SCIENCE BOOK PRIZE Even small children know there are infinitely many whole numbers - start counting and you'll never reach the end. But there are also infinitely many decimal numbers between zero and one. Are these two types of infinity the same? Are they larger or smaller than each other? Can we even talk about 'larger' and 'smaller' when we talk about infinity? In Beyond Infinity, international maths sensation Eugenia Cheng reveals the inner workings of infinity. What happens when a new guest arrives at your infinite hotel - but you already have an infinite number of guests? How does infinity give Zeno's tortoise the edge in a paradoxical foot-race with Achilles? And can we really make an infinite number of cookies from a finite amount of cookie dough? Wielding an armoury of inventive, intuitive metaphor, Cheng draws beginners and enthusiasts alike into the heart of this mysterious, powerful concept to reveal fundamental truths about mathematics, all the way from the infinitely large down to the infinitely small.
