Have you any engagements, or may I hope you will accept my company for a stroll this sunny September afternoon? You will! I am greatly honoured. You have not seen much of the town, I daresay? As I thought; you have seen the Market-place pump and the Town Hall, and that is all. Well, be good enough, without more ceremony, to follow me, and I will show you a better sight. Puff! Now we are out of the streets, and can speak and be heard. This broad avenue that you see before you is the Queen's Walk. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Abbey Improved: Chilled Shot Co There is a class of readers whose love of sport and nature is immense, but whose lines are laid for the most part in uninteresting Wildernesses of bricks and mortar. Letters Often reach me from such sources, and I gather that books of sporting reminiscences appeal most strongly, and bring feelings of delight, tempered maybe with regret, if they contain a whiff of the heather and turf reek, wafted through sunlight by breezes, perhaps brine - laden, to the music of rippling, gurgling streams, roaring rivers, or lake wavelets breaking on the Shore. Days in Thule with Rod, Gun, and Camera, and Days of My Life on Waters Fresh and Salt, made me many friends among the class I refer to, and I venture to hope that this latest effort of my pen will not be less pleasing to them and other readers than the two books of like character, which have gone before. But for the most, the greatest recruiting agent was not a primitive desire for excitement, nor a parrot-cry like Your King and Country need you (with frenzied emphasis on the You nor any of those other ingenious advertisements which have amazed, and rather Shocked, our Allies it was not patriotism, as that word is usually interpreted it was not a collective virtue at all, but that Simple and old-fashioned feeling - amour propre. Once the war had started, and the country (as one frank recruit put it) was in a bloody mess, it did not matter very much where we were fighting, or whom, or why. The more comfortable a decent and peaceable British youth was at home, the more uncomfort able he became at the thought that the other fellow was taking all the risks. So he rolled up in hundreds of thousands to the recruiting offices, with nothing more definite in his mind than that he was going. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Shot This story of war grew out of my experience in many wars. I have been under fire without fighting; known the comradeship of arms without bearing arms, and the hardships and the humors of the march with only an observer's incentive. A singular career, begun by chance, was pursued to the ends of the earth in the study of the greatest drama which the earth stages. Whether watching a small force of white regulars disciplining a primitive people, or the complex tactics of huge army against huge army; whether watching war in the large or in the small, I have found the same basic human qualities in the white heat of con ict working out the same illusions, heroisms, tragedies, and comedies. The fellowship of campaigning made the cause of the force that I accompanied mine for the time being. Thus, one who settles in the town of A absorbs its local feeling of rivalry against the town of B in ath lctic games or character of citizenship. To A, B is never quite sportsmanlike; B is provincial and bigoted and generally inferior. But settle in B and your prejudices reverse their favor from A to B. Yet in the midst of battle, with the detachment of a non-combatant marvelling at the irony of two lines of men engaged in an effort at mutual extermination, I have caught myself thinking with the other side. I knew why my side was busy at killing. Why was the other? For the same reasons as ours. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stray Shots "If I were not a Frenchman, I should wish to he an Englishman," said a French Minister, with a complimentary how, to an English Minister. "If I were not an Englishman, I should wish to be one," was the blunt reply. Here spoke the pride of race, the proud feeling of superiority, the conviction that England was the greatest nation in the world; that her mission, her motives, her policy were for the good of civilization and of mankind. Pride of race has been the birthright of Englishmen for 300 years, handed down from father to son as a priceless heirloom. For the time it is gone, vanished out of sight. If any of the mighty dead - Chatham, Pitt, Canning, Palmerston, Russell, or even peace-loving Aberdeen - were to revisit the House of Commons, they would scarcely recognise the English breed. They would see defeat, disgrace, humiliation to our arms and our diplomacy, condoned without a murmur, treated with absolute apathy and indifference. They would see a class to whom the glory of the British Empire is a distasteful theme, who look upon it rather as an incubus to be got rid of, who shudder at the strains of, "Rule Britannia," as Mephistopheles shudders at the church bells! They would find the age of patriotism dead, and in its place an age of sophisters, economists, and calculators. If they should inquire what has caused this great wreck of national pride, they will learn that during his Midlothian campaign Mr. Gladstone and his followers set themselves to undo everything that Lord Beaconsfield had done. whether it was working well for the country or not; every stone of the edifice he erected with so much care and forethought was to be destroyed, not because it was working badly for the country, but because it was the work of Lord Beaconsfield. By exaggeration, by inaccuracies, by passion, by insinuation, Mr. Gladstone so distorted the aspect of the Imperial policy of Lord Beaconsfield that the people began to believe that the Empire was a curse rather than a blessing to them; that it existed for the benefit of the rich alone at the expense of the poor; that it was a Tory institution, in which the rest of the community had no share. It is this feeling that has caused the present alarming apathy on all national matters. But this feeling cannot last. A nation cannot change its skin like a snake. It cannot be completely transformed in two years. It may be confused and bewildered by sonorous verbosity, by mock sermons on humanity and national humility, and fancy it has got rid of the old Adam, but it has not. As sure as the sun rises, England will soon awake again, and the awakening may be dangerous. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. If he has sometimes seemed too Slow, the nation, with her great charitable heart, and magnanimous spirit, has possessed the forbearance and the patience to wait. If he possessed not the foresight to see and comprehend the magnitude Of this mighty Rebellion, he is indeed blameless for the immense sacrifice Of life which it has cost, and the procrastination which has at times stolen the march upon our armies, while the enemy has been preparing to shell our batteries and trample upon Freedom's soil. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Shot Beginning would involve the necessity of givin g that and othelp puerile information. Nobody would be the better for a learned chapter on gun actions. In the first place, these actions are no longer patents, they are open to anyone who likes to use them, and consequently the days when one selected a gun-maker because his patent action was conceived to be the better, are long gone by. The reason is that each gun-maker can be trusted to use the best principle when he has a choice of them all, or at least the best available for the money to be expended upon its making in the gun. Ejectors are nearly in the same position; but single triggers are not. I was so fortunate as to make a discovery in regard to single triggers that is now acknowledged to be of great assistance to the gun trade; the want of it had for a hundred years been the stumbling-block to the patent single triggers that had begun to trouble gun-makers in the time of the celebrated Colonel Thornton. That is referred to in its proper chapter, because single triggers now occupy the place that formerly actions held, and at a later date ejector systems usurped, in assisting to the selection of a gun maker.
