Book Synopsis The Borders of Inequality by : ê–igo MorŽ Mart’nez
Download or read book The Borders of Inequality written by ê–igo MorŽ Mart’nez and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2011-05-15 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently U.S. media, policymakers, and commentators of all stripes have been preoccupied with the nationÕs border with Mexico. Airwaves, websites, and blogs are filled with concerns over border issues: illegal immigrants, drug wars, narcotics trafficking, and Òsecuring the border.Ó While this is a valid conversation, itÕs rarely contrasted with the other U.S. border, with CanadaÑ still the longest unguarded border on Earth. In this fascinating book, originally published in Spain to much acclaim, researcher ê–igo MorŽ looks at the bigger picture. With a professionally trained eye, he examines the worldÕs Òtop twenty most unequal borders.Ó What he finds is that many of these border situations share similar characteristics. There is always illegal immigration from the poor country to the wealthy one. There is always trafficking in illegal substances. And the unequal neighbors usually regard each other with suspicion or even open hostility. After surveying the Òtop twenty,Ó MorŽ explores in depth the cases of three borders: between Germany and Poland, Spain and Morocco, and the United States and Mexico. The core problem, he concludes, is not drugs or immigration or self-protection. Rather, the problem is inequality itself. Unequal borders result, he writes, from a skewed interaction among markets, people, and states. Using these findings, MorŽ builds a useful new framework for analyzing border dynamics from a quantitative view based on economic inequality. The Borders of Inequality illustrates how longstanding Òmultidirectional misunderstandingsÓ can exacerbate cross-border problemsÑand consequent public opinion. Perpetuating these misunderstandings can inflame and complicate the situation, but purposeful efforts to reduce inequality can produce promising results.
Book Synopsis Border Poetics in German and Polish Literature by : Karolina May-Chu
Download or read book Border Poetics in German and Polish Literature written by Karolina May-Chu and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines how contemporary German and Polish novels reimagine borderlands as cosmopolitan spaces by engaging in border poetics, a narrative practice that relates political borders to figurative boundaries.Globalization notwithstanding, we live in an age of borders, as the ongoing conflict at Europe's eastern edge reminds us. Borders are meant to protect, but they more often divide and exclude. This book, however, focuses on literature that pushes back against the divisiveness of borders, advocating for transborder connections and criticizing exclusionary boundaries. It examines novels that reimagine past and present German-Polish borderlands as cosmopolitan spaces. Novels by Nobel Prize winners Olga Tokarczuk and Günter Grass are discussed alongside works by authors less well known internationally: the Polish Inga Iwasiów, the German Tanja Dückers, and the German-Polish Sabrina Janesch. The book utilizes and elaborates the concept of border poetics, a narrative and cultural practice that places political borders in relation to less concrete borders such as those of gender, ethnicity, or class, as well as in relation to epistemological and ontological boundaries: of language, knowledge, even reality. Because border poetics rests on the same productive tension between the particular and the universal that drives contemporary notions of cosmopolitanism, the book argues for the practice as an expression of what sociologist Gerard Delanty has termed "cosmopolitan imagination." The richly contextualized analysis is framed within transnational German Studies and draws on border studies, cosmopolitanism, European literature, and world literature.ders in relation to less concrete borders such as those of gender, ethnicity, or class, as well as in relation to epistemological and ontological boundaries: of language, knowledge, even reality. Book Synopsis Polish American History after 1939 by : Joanna Wojdon
Download or read book Polish American History after 1939 written by Joanna Wojdon and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second in a three-part, multi-authored study of Polish American history which aims to present the history of Polish Americans in the United States from the beginning of Polish presence on the continent to the current times, shown against a broad historical background of developments in Poland, the United States and other locations of the Polish Diaspora. According to the 2010 US Census, there are 9.5 million persons who identify themselves as Polish Americans in the United States, making them the eighth largest ethnic group in the country today. Polish Americans, or Polonia for short, has always been one of the largest immigrant and ethnic groups and the largest Slavic group in America. Despite that, common knowledge about its social and political life, culture and economy is still inadequate – in Academia and among the Polish Americans themselves. The book discusses the major themes in Polish American history, such as organizational life and the structure of the community facing subsequent waves of immigration from Poland, its leadership and political involvement in Polish and American affairs, as well as living and working conditions, and the everyday life of families and communities, their culture, ethnic identity and relations with the broadly understood American society, starting from the outbreak of World War 2 in Poland in September, 1939, and ending with the highlights of the 21st-century developments. It depicts Polish Americans’ transition from a ‘minority’ through ‘ethnic’ group to Americans who take pride in their symbolic ethnicity, maintained intentionally and manifested occasionally. This volume will be of great value to students and scholars alike interested in Polish and American History and Social and Cultural History.
