Download or read book Jerusalem and Babylon written by Johannes van Oort and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many studies have been devoted to Augustine's City of God and its most important theme, viz. the antithesis between the civitas Dei and the terrena civitas, until now no consensus has been reached concerning the sources of this doctrine. Was Augustine decisively influenced by Manichaeism, by (Neo)Platonism, the Stoa or Philo, by the Donatist Tyconius? Or should we look in another direction and refer to preceding Christian, Jewish, and especially to archaic Jewish-Christian traditions? This lucidly written books opens with a survey of the research carried out so far on the aim, structure and central theme of the City of God. Chapter 2 analyzes the essentials of Augustine's life, of his City of God, and of his doctrine of the two cities. Making use of one of the recently discovered letters of Augustine in Chapter 3 the author describes the City of God as an apology and as a catechetical work. Chapter 4 provides an investigation into the possible sources of Augustine's doctrine of the two cities in Manichaeism, in (Neo)Platonism, the Stoa and Philo, and in the works of Tyconius. The idea of two antithetical cities proves to be present most clearly in writings in which, closely related to Jewish thinking, archaic Christian concepts occupy an important place. In a final chapter some pertinent remarks are made on Jewish and Jewish-Christian influences on pre-Augustinian Christianity in Africa.

Download or read book The Fall and Rise of Jerusalem written by Oded Lipschitz and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 2005 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period of the demise of the kingdom of Judah at the end of the 6th century B.C.E., the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians, the exile of the elite to Babylon, and the reshaping of the territory of the new province of Judah, culminating at the end of the century with the first return of exiles--all have been subjects of intense scrutiny during the last decade. Lipschits takes into account the biblical textual evidence, the results of archaeological research, and the reports of Babylonian and Egyptian sources and provides a comprehensive survey and analysis of the evidence for the history of this 100-year-long era. He provides a lucid historical survey that will, no doubt, become the baseline for all future studies of this era.

Book Synopsis Judeans in Babylonia by : Tero Alstola
Download or read book Judeans in Babylonia written by Tero Alstola and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Judeans in Babylonia, Tero Alstola presents a comprehensive investigation of deportees in the sixth and fifth centuries BCE. By using cuneiform documents as his sources, he offers the first book-length social historical study of the Babylonian Exile, commonly regarded as a pivotal period in the development of Judaism. The results are considered in the light of the wider Babylonian society and contrasted against a comparison group of Neirabian deportees. Studying texts from the cities and countryside and tracking developments over time, Alstola shows that there was notable diversity in the Judeans’ socio-economic status and integration into Babylonian society.

Book Synopsis The Return from Babylon to Jerusalem C 536-450 BC by : Betty Banaszak
Download or read book The Return from Babylon to Jerusalem C 536-450 BC written by Betty Banaszak and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-06-11 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Return is a sequel to its predecessor The Divided Kingdom which covers Israel's history from the time of Solomon to the Babylonian Captivity and includes all the written prophets of that period. The Return picks up where Cyrus the Great and Darius the Mede conquer Babylon and bring in the new empire under the joint government of the Medes and the Persians. God continues to move mightily in high places, this time effecting the unprecedented liberation of all subjects to return peaceably to their homelands. The timetable is perfect: precisely seventy years later according to Jeremiah's prophecy in Jer. 29:10 "For thus saith the Lord, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place." This Return is called the Restoration Period where God releases the Jews to return and restore all that has been destroyed because of their iniquities. Against the backdrop of some of history's greatest rulers, the Jews are graced with overwhelming subsidies to support the rebuilding of their cherished city Jerusalem and its fallen Temple. Cyrus the Great, Darius the Great, Xerxes the Great and his son, Artaxerxes (Longimanus) the Great, all play key roles in the history of God's chosen people. The Return covers the writings of Ezra, Nehemiah, Daniel, the prophetic words of Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi, and the chilling account of Queen Esther who risks her life to staunch an empire-wide attempt to annihilate her people. The events of this Old Testament period foreshadow the Christian dispensation where the church is progressively released from her spiritual Babylonian captivity through the ministries of Luther, the Wesley brothers, the charismatic revivals of the 20th century with the restoration of spiritual gifts and ministries, and the current emphasis on Christ's second coming. The Restoration leaders and prophets focus on the celebration of Israel's third great feast, the Feast of Tabernacles. The moving of God's spirit today is centered on the fulfillment of this crowning moment where the sons of God who have matured in Christ will appear as the governors of the Millennial Reign of Christ, and bring in an age of peace and harmony in the earth. All this and more are covered in this scholarly, yet easy to read, volume of Biblical truth. The 2 volume 81⁄2" x 11" edition is in larger print and the illustrations are clearer. The single volume 6" x 9" Compact Edition is in smaller print and more portable. Both volumes 738 pages

Book Synopsis The Divided Kingdom of Israel and Judah C. 975--536 BC by : Betty Banaszak
Download or read book The Divided Kingdom of Israel and Judah C. 975--536 BC written by Betty Banaszak and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-12-24 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period of Biblical history known as the Divided Kingdom or the period of the Kings and the Prophets refers to the time when the nation of Israel broke into two rival kingdoms—Israel in the north and Judah in the south—each governed by its own succession of kings. During this period of monarchical rule, God sent many prophets with the purpose of keeping the government of His covenant people in line with His commandments and righteous laws. Besides the prophets which were anointed to address particular situations, there was an unbroken line of written prophets from Joel (chronologically) to Daniel who were sent to deliver words of judgment, warning, instruction and hope for the future. In order to appreciate the intricate fabric of this complex period one has to weave together three books of history—I and II Kings and II Chronicles—and all the prophets from Isaiah to Zephaniah. Kingship ended under Nebuchadnezzar's Babylonian dominion when the last king of Judah was taken captive to Babylon. The entire nation's captivity officially ended in 536 BC when Cyrus, the first Persian emperor, released the captives to return to their homelands and rebuild what Babylon had destroyed. As we study the accounts of Biblical and secular history we discover the magnitude of the hand of God operating throughout the heathen world and, more intimately, in the midst of Israel's many trials and aberrations. Our faith is strengthened as we recognize that it is the hand of the same God who controls our current world affairs in the global events of these days. The intent of this book is to guide the student as well as the most dedicated pastors and teachers through this dynamic period in simplicity and historical accuracy, and in so doing, reinforce our faith as we face the mounting turbulence in our own generation.
