Book excerpt: Excerpt from Betha Colaim Chille: Life of Columcille Of the following Life of Columcille, written by Manus O'Donnell in 1532, the first 157 sections were edited and translated by the late Richard Henebry, and sections 157 to 232, by A. O'Kelleher, in the Zeitschrift fur Celtische Philologie III-V, IX, and X, during the years 1901 to 1914. The work was thus progressing with exceeding slowness when, in 1916, it received an unexpected impetus. In June of that) year the attention of the Irish Fellowship Club of Chicago was drawn by President James of the University of Illinois to the importance of encouraging Irish studies in American universities, and by one of the present editors to the great number of Irish manuscripts still inedited. The Hon. John P. McGoorty, who presided at the meeting, invited the cooperation of persons interested in Irish studies, both within and outside the Irish Fellowship Club, to act upon these suggestions. A society was organized under the name of the "Irish Foundation of Chicago," to membership in which all persons interested in Irish studies are eligible. The aim of the Foundation is to foster the publication of Irish texts in America by offering academic stipends to train scholars in the Irish language and to enable scholars already trained to devote themselves to the work of editing. The first fellowship was shortly afterward established. The Foundation guaranteed to the University of Illinois a stipend of twelve hundred dollars to enable a Research Fellow in Gaelic to give his entire time to the editing of Irish manuscripts. Rev. A. O'Kelleher, of the parish of SS. Peter and Paul at Great Crosby, and Lecturer in the University of Liverpool, was offered the appointment in November, 1916. He came to Illinois at once and has since that time devoted himself exclusively to the work of editing. Under the generous auspices of the Graduate School of the University of Illinois it has been possible to publish this Life of Columcille after somewhat less than two years of his tenure of the fellowship. Download or read book Digital Decision Making written by Ray Corrigan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-11 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid 1990s, when the general public began using the Internet, governments and commerce have made vast investments in digital communications technology. There has been confusion and sometimes controversy over these, for example the proposed UK identity card system. The far-reaching commercial and social implications of decisions made in invisible or opaque specialist fields should concern every citizen. This book argues that decisions should be based on an understanding of the systems, technology and environment within which they operate; that experts and ordinary people should work together; and that technology and law are evolving in restrictive rather than enabling ways.

Book Synopsis Native and Natural by : Peter T. McQuillan
Download or read book Native and Natural written by Peter T. McQuillan and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter McQuillan analyzes a number of key words in the Irish language--duchas, duthaigh, dual, and saoirse--along with derivatives and associated terms in order to reveal their relationships to historical and cultural texts. He demonstrates how the pragmatic, semantic, and syntactic range of these terms evolved over time in relation to differing historical conditions, thereby underscoring characteristic features of the Irish language and of Irish cultural attitudes, practices, and experiences. McQuillan establishes affiliations between these ranges and the sometimes catastrophic changes that beset the culture in which these concepts played such a defining role. The discussions are situated within the linguistic-anthropological theories of Boas, Sapir, Whorf, Voloshonov, Pierce, Saussure, and other scholars, such as Silverstein and Wierzbecka.
Book Synopsis Ireland and the Reception of the Bible by : Bradford A. Anderson
Download or read book Ireland and the Reception of the Bible written by Bradford A. Anderson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the work of leading figures in biblical, religious, historical, and cultural studies in Ireland and beyond, this volume explores the reception of the Bible in Ireland, focusing on the social and cultural dimensions of such use of the Bible. This includes the transmission of the Bible, the Bible and identity formation, engagement beyond Ireland, and cultural and artistic appropriation of the Bible. The chapters collected here are particularly useful and insightful for those researching the use and reception of the Bible, as well as those with broader interests in social and cultural dimensions of Irish history and Irish studies. The chapters challenge the perception in the minds of many that the Bible is a static book with a fixed place in the world that can be relegated to ecclesial contexts and perhaps academic study. Rather, as this book shows, the role of the Bible in the world is much more complex. Nowhere is this clearer than in Ireland, with its rich and complex religious, cultural, and social history. This volume examines these very issues, highlighting the varied ways in which the Bible has impacted Irish life and society, as well as the ways in which the cultural specificity of Ireland has impacted the use and development of the Bible both in Ireland and further afield.
