Book excerpt: In order to facilitate analysis of muon capture in 16O, results are presented of a shell-model calculation of low-lying odd-parity states of 16O and 16N, including the effects of a two-particle spin-orbit interaction. Calculated energy levels and rates for various beta-decay and muon-capture transitions are given as functions of the spin-orbit interaction strength. Formulas are obtained for single-level muon-capture rates for the following transitions: 12C(0+) 12B(1+); 16O(0+) to 16N(0- ); 16O(0+) to 16N(1- ); and 16O(0+) to 16N(2- ). The formulas include effects of finite nuclear size and relativistic treatment of the muon, and are presented in a form showing explicit dependence on induced form factors and on configuration-mixing coefficients for the various nuclear levels. Download or read book The Theory of Beta-Decay written by C. Strachan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theory of Beta-Decay covers the formulas, theories, probabilities, and spectra of beta-decay. This book is divided into 2 parts compassing 12 chapters, and starts with the introduction to the neutrino and the quantum theoretical background, explaining the basic phenomenon of beta-decay and the emission of electrons. The subsequent chapters deal with the interaction and the transition probability, as well as formulas of solutions. These topics are followed by discussions on the developments in the non-conservation of parity and helicity, the two-component theory of the neutrino, possible invariance under time-reversal and charge conjugation, leptonic number of lepton charge, and muon decay and other theories. Other chapters describe the tentative theory of beta-radiation, the detection of the free neutrino, and the selection rules for the beta-disintegration. The last chapters consider questions and experimental test about beta-decay. The chapters also look into the theories and helicity of neutrino, the theory of the Fermi interaction, and the test of the nature of the vector interaction in beta-decay This book will be of value to physicists and researchers in the allied fields.

Download or read book The Future of Muon Physics written by Klaus Jungmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises a collection of invited papers presented at the interna tional symposium "The Future of Muon Physics", May 7-9 1991, at the Ruprecht Karls-Universitat in Heidelberg. In the inspiring atmosphere of the Internationales Wissenschaftsforum researchers working worldwide at universities and at many inter national accelerator centers came together to review the present status of the field and to discuss the future directions in muon physics. The muon, charged lepton of the second generation, was first oberved some sixty years ago~ Despite many efforts since, the reason for its existence still remains a secret to the scientific community challenging both theorists and experimentalists. In modern physics the muon plays a key role in many topics of research. Atomic physics with negative muons provides excellent tests of the theory of quantum electrodynamics and of the electro-weak interaction and probes nuclear properties. The. purely leptonic hydrogen-like muonium atom allows tests of fun damental laws in physics and the determination of precise values for fundamental constants. New measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon will probe the renormalizability of the weak interaction and will be sensitive to physics beyond the standard model. The muon decay is the most carefully studied weak process. Searches for rare decay modes of muons and for the conversion of muonium to antimuonium examine the lepton number conservation laws and new speculative theories. Nuclear muon capture addresses fundamental questions like tests of the CPT theorem.
Book Synopsis Weak Interactions in Nuclei by : Barry R. Holstein
Download or read book Weak Interactions in Nuclei written by Barry R. Holstein and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently a symbiotic relationship between particle and nuclear physics has developed, with techniques and ideas from one field fertilizing developments in the other. This work outlines concepts from modern particle physics important to the current understanding of nuclear physics and reviews experiments involving nuclei which have influenced the present particle physics view of the weak interaction. In his discussion, the author summarizes both past and present activity in the field and identifies areas for future work. Familiarity with quantum mechanics is assumed in the presentation of ideas in this book intended for readers at the graduate level and beyond. A major goal of Weak Interactions in Nuclei is to encourage further activity at the intersection of particle and nuclear physics, two path-breaking areas of study in modern physics. Book Synopsis B Decays (Revised 2nd Edition) by : Sheldon Stone
Download or read book B Decays (Revised 2nd Edition) written by Sheldon Stone and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-08-01 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2nd edition is an extensive update of 'B Decays”. The revisions are necessary because of the extensive amount of new data and new theoretical ideas. This book reviews what is known about b-quark decays and also looks at what can be learned in the future. The importance of this research area is increasing, as evidenced by the approval of the luminosity upgrade for CESR and the asymmetric B factories at SLAC and KEK, and the possibility of experiments at hadron colliders. The key experimental observations made thus far, measurement of the lifetimes of the different B species, B0-B0 mixing, the discovery of “Penguin” mediated decays, and the extraction of the CKM matrix elements Vub and Vcb from semileptonic decays, as well as more mundane results, are described in great detail by the experimentalists who have been closely involved with making the measurements. Theoretical progress in understanding b-quark decays using HQET and lattice gauge techniques are described by theorists who have developed and used these techniques.Synthesizing the experimental and theoretical information, several articles discuss the implications for the “Standard Model” and how further tests can be done using measurements of CP violation in the B system.
