Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the EU Global Strategy (EUGS). By reflecting back on the 2003 European Security Strategy, this book uncovers the background, the process, the content and the follow-up of the EUGS thirteen years later. By framing the EUGS in this broader context, this book is essential for anyone wishing to understand European foreign policy. The author, who drafted the EUGS on behalf of High Representative and Vice President of the Commission (HRVP) Federica Mogherini, uses the lens of the EUGS to provide a broader narrative of the EU and its functioning. Tocci’s hybrid role as a scholar and adviser has given her unique access to and knowledge of a wide range of complex structures and actors, all the while remaining sufficiently detached from official processes to retain an observer’s eye. This book reflects this hybrid nature: while written by and for scholars, it is not a classic scholarly work, but will appeal to anyone wishing to learn more about the EUGS and European foreign policy more broadly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brexit is likely to lead to the largest shift in Britain's economic orientation in living memory. Some have argued that leaving the EU will enable Britain to revive markets in Commonwealth countries with which it has long-standing historical ties. Their opponents maintain that such claims are based on forms of imperial nostalgia which ignore the often uncomfortable historical trade relations between Britain and these countries, as well as the UK's historical role as a global, rather than chiefly imperial, economy. Forging a British World of Trade explores how efforts to promote a 'British World' system, centred on promoting trade between Britain and the Dominions, grew and declined in influence between the 1880s and 1970s. At the beginning of the twentieth century many people from London, to Sydney, Auckland, and Toronto considered themselves to belong to culturally British nations. British politicians and business leaders invested significant resources in promoting trade with Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa out of a perception that these were great markets of the future. However, ideas about promoting trade between 'British' peoples were racially exclusive. From the 1920s onwards, colonized and decolonizing populations questioned and challenged the basis of British World networks, making use of alternative forms of international collaboration promoted firstly by the League of Nations, and then by the United Nations. Schemes for imperial collaboration amongst ethnically 'British' peoples were hollowed out by the actions of a variety of political and business leaders across Asia and Africa who reshaped the functions and identity of the Commonwealth.

Book excerpt: This book reveals what happens to applications for post-conviction review when those in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland who believe they are wrongfully convicted apply to the Criminal Cases Review Commission, the only body that can refer a case back to the Court of Appeal once appellants opportunities for direct appeal are exhausted. While the Court is obliged to hear all such referrals, the Commission can only refer a case where it believes there is a real possibility that the Court will quash the conviction. The first empirical study of all stages of decision-making within the Commission, this book starts from the premise that the test applied by the Commission (the real possibility test) is not inflexible. Though created by statute and refined through case law, it must be determined on a case-by-case basis, drawing too on cultural and structural variables, alongside fresh evidence gathered by the Commission. Through in-depth analysis of case files and interviews, Hoyle and Sato scrutinize the Commissions operational practices, its working rules and assumptions, considering how these influence its understanding of the real possibility test. Situating their rich empirical data within a framework of the Commissions social, organizational, and legal contexts, this book demonstrates that in its open-ended investigations there is considerable scope for discretion; for thorough exploration of all possible avenues or for choosing a more superficial consideration of a case. It emerges that while structured internal guidance, drawing heavily on Court jurisprudence, shapes decision-making, creating consistency in approach, there remains some variability across cases, over time, that can be accounted for by the different professional backgrounds and personalities of Commission staff.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a detailed examination of the counter-insurgency operations undertaken by the Nigerian military against Boko Haram between 2011 and 2017. Based on extensive fieldwork conducted with military units in Nigeria, Counter-Insurgency in Nigeria has two main aims. First, it seeks to provide an understanding of the Nigerian military’s internal role – a role that today, as a result of internal threats, pivots towards counter-insurgency. The book illustrates how organizational culture, historical experience, institutions, and doctrine, are critical to understanding the Nigerian military and its attitudes and actions against the threat of civil disobedience, today and in the past. The second aim of the book is to examine the Nigerian military campaign against Boko Haram insurgents – specifically, plans and operations between June 2011 and April 2017. Within this second theme, emphasis is placed on the idea of battlefield innovation and the reorganization within the Nigerian military since 2013, as the Nigerian Army and Air Force recalibrated themselves for COIN warfare. A certain mystique has surrounded the technicalities of COIN operations by the Army against Boko Haram, and this book aims to disperse that veil of secrecy. Furthermore, the work’s analysis of the air force’s role in counter-insurgency is unprecedented within the literature on military warfare in Nigeria. This book will be of great interest to students of military studies, counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism, African politics and security studies in general.

Book excerpt: In today’s connected world, the demand for mobile communications and instant access to information, anytime and anywhere, has drastically changed the electronics landscape, both consumer and industrial. Novel 5G and 6G systems will enable connectivity in all forms between humans, devices, machines, and any objects. They will provide virtually ubiquitous, ultra-high bandwidth and low latency network access to individual users, as well as to all objects benefiting from being connected. They will be the "eyes and ears" of Artificial Intelligence systems as it will provide real-time data collection and analysis. Such diversity calls for a new paradigm in terms of flexibility, not only related to performance, but also in terms of scalability and cost. 5G and 6G communication systems imply a major stake of sovereignty and autonomy for the communication sector and digital infrastructures of the future. All products related to IoT, traffic, and health care, supported by connectivity will benefit the citizens in their daily lives to improve everything from business to private affairs. Together, this will influence society as much as smart phones did in the recent past. It is all about communication and connectivity. This book provides an overview of the latest research results in this field. It is based on the close collaboration in the BEYOND5 project, extended with vision and roadmap insights by European experts leading the 6G development. The BEYOND5 project has built a completely European supply chain for Radio-Frequency Electronics, enabling new RF domains for sensing, communication, 5G radio infrastructure and beyond. Moving forward into higher frequency bands above 100 GHz for 6G, also more disruptive technologies, using heterogeneous integration of CMOS, SOI, and III/V components such as GaN or InP, and advanced packaging techniques will be necessary to realize the objectives of ubiquitous, ultra-high bandwidth and low latency networks. The book bundles the scientific content of the International Workshop on "Technologies enabling future mobile connectivity & sensing" in Lisbon, Portugal 10 September 2023, as part of the ESSCIRC/ESSDERC 2023 European Solid-state Circuits and Devices Conference. Through articles and abstracts, a combined view of experts and practitioners representing academia, research, and industry in the field of wireless communication systems is given. They cover the topics of RF and digital SOI technology development for 5 and 6G, device and substrate characterization, packaging technology, and the realization of full systems including power amplifiers, linearization techniques, beamforming transceivers, access points, and radar detection.

Book excerpt: The Holy Scriptures Of Mokonvist Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from Mokonvist? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify Mokonvist in your body. Use this important religious text to follow the Almighty Mokonvist and the Kingdomist faith. The Holy Scripture of Mokonvist is inspired by God, through dreams, revelations, visions, prophecies, and parables. Mokonvist reveals his mystery and that the beauty of human beings should be preserved. In this Holy Scripture, Mokonvist will teach you how to maintain that beauty. 1. Angels appear to you as good, because Mokonvist created you and said they are good. You will also learn why Mokonvist wishes that you look nice and how Mokonvist can support you to look after your body. You will also come to understand that this Holy Scripture of Mokonvist involves deep spiritual reflection. Mokonvist, in Heaven, revealed this Holy Scripture to his prophet, Gabriel, through dreams, revelations, visions, prophecies, and parables. These Holy words are presented here for you to study and include considerations of the present and of the future. You must always understand that the secrets of the Holy Scripture of Mokonvist came directly from Mokonvist, in Heaven. It can be confusing for humans to comprehend this. The key to this revelation is to remember that ‘time’ plays a great role in the life of all human beings. You were born on ‘time’, you're grown on ‘time’, work on ‘time’, and live your entire life, on ‘time’. Each vision, dream, revelation, prophecy, and parable from all the prophets of Mokonvist were made at different ‘times’. Your life depends on it. Please know and understand that only the wise that have faith can interpret and understand these Holy Scriptures. There are lots of parables also. Now be ready for the day or the hour because no one knows; not the Angels in Heaven; not the prophet Gabriel; only Mokonvist. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. Mokonvist only wishes that you are a good soldier of the faith and are ready for victory. Visions, dreams, revelations are not always complete and are sometimes cut short. If your faith has been disturbed by noise or from someone, you must avoid that disturbance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite growing scholarly interest in the EU’s flagship policy towards its Eastern and Southern neighbours, serious attempts at theory-building on the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) have been largely absent from the academic debate. This book aims at contributing to fill this research gap in a three-fold manner: first and foremost it aims at theorizing the ENP as such, explaining the origins, development and effectiveness of this policy. Building on this effort, it also pursues the broader objective of addressing certain shortcomings in EU external relations theory, and even beyond, in International Relations theory. Finally, it aspires to provide new insights for European policy-makers. It is one of the first volumes to provide different theoretical perspectives on the ENP by revisiting and building bridges between mainstream and critical theories, stimulating academic and policy debates and thus setting a novel, less EU-centric research agenda. This text will be of key interest to scholars, students and practitioners in EU external relations, EU foreign policy, the European Neighbourhood Policy, and more broadly in European Union Politics and International Relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too often, economics disassociates humans from nature, the economy from the biosphere that contains it, and sustainability from fairness. When economists do engage with environmental issues, they typically reduce their analysis to a science of efficiency that leaves aside issues of distributional analysis and justice. The aim of this lucid textbook is to provide a framework that prioritizes human well-being within the limits of the biosphere, and to rethink economic analysis and policy in the light of not just efficiency but equity. Leading economist Éloi Laurent systematically ties together sustainability and justice issues in covering a wide range of topics, from biodiversity and ecosystems, energy and climate change, environmental health and environmental justice, to new indicators of well-being and sustainability beyond GDP and growth, social-ecological transition, and sustainable urban systems. This book equips readers with ideas and tools from various disciplines alongside economics, such as history, political science, and philosophy, and invites them to apply those insights in order to understand and eventually tackle pressing twenty-first-century challenges. It will be an invaluable resource for students of environmental economics and policy, and sustainable development.

Many Christians are concerned about how to properly respond to such oppression. This book meticulously examines contemporary responses to persecution alongside biblical and historical experience using the theoretical framework of Fight, Flight, and Fortitude. The writer is convinced that if Christians respond to persecution properly the gospel witness will be strengthened and bridges for peaceful interrelationship will be built in communities experiencing religious and cultural diversity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offers the first systematic account of Iran’s foreign policy following the nuclear agreement (JCPOA) of July 14, 2015. The author evaluates in what ways the JCPOA, in conjunction with the dramatic changes taking shape in the international order, have affected Iran’s foreign policy. Known as Normalizers, the moderate leadership under President Hassan Rouhani had planned to normalize Iran’s foreign relations by curtailing terrorism and reintegrate Iran into the community of nations. Their hardline opponents, the Principalists, rejected the JCPOA as a tool of subjection to the West and insisted on exporting the Islamist revolution, a source of much destabilization and terror in the region and beyond. The project also analyzes the struggle between Normalizers and their hardline opponents with regards to global and regional issues and Iran’s foreign policy towards global powers including the U.S., Russia, EU, and regional countries including Iraq, Syria, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
