Book Synopsis Learning from Burnout by : Tim Casserley
Download or read book Learning from Burnout written by Tim Casserley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-10-30 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burnout is a taboo subject. Admitting you are burning out in your job is tantamount to career suicide for some employees; for their organizations it is like raising a white flag in the war for talent. But suppose that preventing burnout is the worst thing you can do. Suppose for some people, particularly high fliers, it represents a call to deep and urgent learning about themselves and how they relate to the world. Suppose that we need instead to learn to manage burnout and harness the powerful learning potential of the experience, and in so doing build careers aligned with individual meaning and purpose, sustainable in the long term. What would organizations and their people need to do to achieve this? This book: * Explains what burnout is, how it is becoming the 21st-century business equivalent of the 'black death', and how it can derail your career * Highlights the financial, reputational and personal costs to organizations and people * Details how burnout can deliver a killer punch to talent management and the development of the leaders of tomorrow, and risk the retention, growth and productivity of high fliers * Explores why some of us develop a strong sense of our own, personal identity at work, while others find it more difficult * Presents a coaching process to manage burnout and harness its learning potential * Provides a framework for individuals to build careers aligned with individual meaning and purpose.

Every so often a love story so captures our hearts that it becomes more than a story-it becomes an experience to remember forever. The Notebook is such a book. It is a celebration of how passion can be ageless and timeless, a tale that moves us to laughter and tears and makes us believe in true love all over again... At thirty-one, Noah Calhoun, back in coastal North Carolina after World War II, is haunted by images of the girl he lost more than a decade earlier. At twenty-nine, socialite Allie Nelson is about to marry a wealthy lawyer, but she cannot stop thinking about the boy who long ago stole her heart. Thus begins the story of a love so enduring and deep it can turn tragedy into triumph, and may even have the power to create a miracle...
Book Synopsis Stewart Parker by : Marilynn Richtarik
Download or read book Stewart Parker written by Marilynn Richtarik and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Belfast during World War II, raised in a working-class Protestant family, and educated on scholarship at Queen's University, writer Stewart Parker's story is in many ways the story of his generation. Other aspects of his personal history, though, such as the amputation of his left leg at age 19, helped to create an extraordinarily perceptive observer and commentator. Steeped in American popular culture as a child and young adult, he spent five years teaching in the United States before returning to Belfast in August 1969, the same week British troops responded to sectarian disturbances there. Parker had developed a sense of writing as a form of political action in the highly charged atmosphere of the US in the late 1960s, which he applied in many and varied capacities throughout the worst years of the Troubles to express his own socialist and secular vision of Northern Irish potential. As a young aspiring poet and novelist, he supported himself with free-lance work that brought him into contact with institutions ranging from BBC Northern Ireland to the Irish Times (for which he wrote personal columns and the music review feature High Pop) and from the Queen's University Extramural Department to Long Kesh internment camp (where his creative writing students included Gerry Adams). It is as a playwright, however, that Parker earned a permanent spot in the literary canon with drama that encapsulates his experience of Northern Ireland in the 1970s. Marilynn Richtarik's Stewart Parker: A Life illuminates the genesis, development, and meaning of such classic plays as Spokesong, Northern Star, and Pentecost - works that continue to shed light on the North's past, present, and future - in the context of Parker's life and times. Meticulously researched and engagingly written, this critical biography rewards general readers and specialists alike.

Book excerpt: Writing and Editing for Digital Media, 2nd edition, teaches students how to write effectively for digital spaces—whether crafting a story for a website, blogging or using Twitter to cover a breaking news story or event. The lessons and exercises in each chapter help students build a solid understanding of the ways that digital communications have introduced opportunities for dynamic storytelling and multi-directional communication. Writing and Editing for Digital Media also addresses the graphical, multimedia, hypertextual and interactive elements that come into play when writing for digital platforms and designing digital spaces. The book teaches students not only to create content, but also to become careful, creative managers of that content. Based on Brian Carroll's extensive experience teaching the course, this revised and updated edition pays particular attention to opportunities presented by the growth of social media and mobile media. Chapters aim to: Assist digital communicators in understanding the social networked, increasingly mobile, always-on, geomapped, personalized media ecosystem; Help writers across multiple communication fields (journalism, marketing, PR, technical writing) make the transition from print to digital; Teach communicators to approach storytelling from a multimedia, multi-modal, interactive perspective. A companion website with exercises and assignments gives students the tools they need to put theory into practice.

Book Synopsis Baseball Injuries by : W. Laurence Coker, M.D.
Download or read book Baseball Injuries written by W. Laurence Coker, M.D. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-04-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In baseball, injuries to players fall into two main categories: overuse and traumatic. Over 162 games, repetitive pitching and batting motions and the stress of base running can damage joints, bones, and soft tissues, making overuse injuries the most common. Traumatic injuries like beanings, sliding injuries, and concussions, while less frequent, add to the DL list each year. This work explores the various types of injuries in baseball and provides case studies of individual player injuries to demonstrate the cause of injuries, the different treatment options, and the effect of injuries on a player's career. Throughout, discussions show the link between injuries and innovations in the game, like the batting helmet and padded outfield walls, and innovations in medicine, such as Tommy John surgery.
