Book Synopsis The Practice of Sustainable Tourism by : Michael Hughes
Download or read book The Practice of Sustainable Tourism written by Michael Hughes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable tourism is a widely used term that has accumulated considerable attention from researchers and policy makers over the past two decades. However, there is still an apparently wide gap between theory and practice in the area. Recent scholarly research has tended to focus on niche areas of alternative tourism rather than address the broader issues and vagaries and paradoxes that appear to plague the broader notion of sustainable tourism. As such, there is a need for a new and pragmatic analysis of sustainable tourism as an overarching idea and how this manifests in practice. The Practice of Sustainable Tourism fulfils this need by offering a fresh perspective on sustainable tourism as an umbrella concept with inherent tensions. It presents a way of thinking about tourism based on the notion of finding common ground using the dialectic tradition of philosophy. Dialectics focusses on resolving opposing viewpoints by recognising they have common elements that can be combined into a rational and practical solution over time. As part of this approach, the book examines the strongly apparent tensions within alternative tourism as well as the paradox of continuing growth and other mass tourism related issues. It is divided into three parts, Part I includes chapters discussing the general concept of sustainable tourism, its history, current status and possible futures; Part II includes a range of destination case studies exploring how sustainable tourism has been applied and Part III includes perspectives from the tourism operator view. Given the international content and challenging themes, the book will be appealing internationally to students, researchers and academics in the fields of tourism, geography, sustainability and social science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Routledge Handbook of Tourism and Sustainability from C. Michael Hall, Stefan Gössling, Daniel Scott is one of the winners of the ITB BookAwards 2016 in the category Specialist tourism literature! Sustainability remains one of the major issues in tourism today. Concerns over climate and environmental change, the fallout from the global economic and financial crisis, and the seeming failure to meeting UN Millennium development goals have only reinforced the need for more sustainable approaches to tourism, however they be defined. Given the centrality of sustainability in tourism curricula, policies, research and practice it is therefore appropriate to prepare a state of the art handbook on the relationship between tourism and sustainability. This timely Handbook of Tourism and Sustainability is developed from specifically commissioned original contributions from recognised authors in the field, providing a systematic guide to the current state of knowledge on this area. It is interdisciplinary in coverage and international in scope through its authorship and content. The volume commences with an assessment of tourism’s global environmental, e.g. climate, emissions, energy use, biodiversity, water use, land use, and socio-economic effects, e.g. economic impacts, employment and livelihoods, culture. This then provides the context for sections outlining the main theoretical frameworks and constructs that inform tourism and sustainability, management tools and approaches, and the approaches used in different tourism and travel industry sectors. The book concludes by examining emerging and future concerns in tourism and sustainability such as peak-oil, post-carbon tourism, green economy and transition tourism. This is essential reading for students, researches and academics interested in the possibilities of sustainable forms of tourism and tourism’s contribution to sustainable development. Its assessment of tourism’s global impact along with its overviews of sectoral and management approaches will provide a benchmark by which the sustainability of tourism will be measured for years to come.
Book Synopsis Sustainable Tourism III by : F. D. Pineda
Download or read book Sustainable Tourism III written by F. D. Pineda and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism, internationally, is the largest economic sector both in terms of earnings and number of people employed. Understandably, the economic advantages have led to the active promotion of tourism by governments and other institutions, often independent of the consequences on the environment. The challenge is to balance the need for a low impact on the environment and local culture, while helping to generate income, employment and the conservation of local ecosystems. Sustainable tourism has to be both ecologically and culturally sensitive. This book contains papers presented at the Third International Conference on Sustainable Development, held in Malta. The Meeting focused on empirical work and case studies from around the world, and the book offers new insight and best practice guidance for supporting sustainable tourism. Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, this book examines the practice of sustainable tourism from global travel trends through to destination and site management. Of interest to scientists, practitioners and policy makers, the topics covered in this volume include: Art, culture and nature; Climate change and tourism; Coastal issues; Community involvement; Ecological issues; IT and tourism; Modelling and estimates; Risk and safety; Rural tourism; Tourism and protected areas; Tourism as a factor of development; Tourism as a tool of urban development; Tourism impact; Tourism strategies.

Book Synopsis Environmental Interpretation and Sustainable Tourism by : Aise Kyoungjin Kim
Download or read book Environmental Interpretation and Sustainable Tourism written by Aise Kyoungjin Kim and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpretation has been used as a visitor management tool in managing the balance between sustainable tourism development and environmental protection. It is noted that high quality of environmental interpretation can enhance visitors' understanding of conservation issues and pro-environmental attitude while promoting environmentally responsible behaviour. Despite its potential benefits, the evaluation of interpretation effectiveness presents a challenging research topic due to the complexity and difficulty of the behavioural change process. This book seeks to address this concern by proposing an alternative approach to future research on this area. It reviews various theoretical approaches that provide a better understanding of 'why' and 'how' interpretation influences behavioural change in different situations. Using case study sites, further empirical data help to identify 'when' interpretation can be successful or failed depending on the type of behaviour. Therefore, it needs to be careful work to develop effective interpretive strategies which incorporate a number of the variables to influence individual's environmental behaviour change using a multiple theoretical viewpoint.
