Book excerpt: Although Bessel functions are among the most widely used functions in applied mathematics, this book is essentially the first to present a calculus associated with this class of functions. The author obtains a generalized umbral calculus associated with the Euler operator and its associated Bessel eigenfunctions for each positive value of an index parameter. For one particular value of this parameter, the functions and operators can be associated with the radial parts of $n$-dimensional Euclidean space objects. Some of the results of this book are in part extensions of the work of Rota and his co-workers on the ordinary umbral calculus and binomial enumeration. The author also introduces a wide variety of new polynomial sequences together with their groups and semigroup compositional properties. Generalized Bernoulli, Euler, and Stirling numbers associated with Bessel functions and the corresponding classes of polynomials are also studied. The book is intended for mathematicians and physicists at the research level in special function theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book (Vista II), is a sequel to Vistas of Special Functions (World Scientific, 2007), in which the authors made a unification of several formulas scattered around the relevant literature under the guiding principle of viewing them as manifestations of the functional equations of associated zeta-functions. In Vista II, which maintains the spirit of the theory of special functions through zeta-functions, the authors base their theory on a theorem which gives some arithmetical Fourier series as intermediate modular relations OCo avatars of the functional equations. Vista II gives an organic and elucidating presentation of the situations where special functions can be effectively used. Vista II will provide the reader ample opportunity to find suitable formulas and the means to apply them to practical problems for actual research. It can even be used during tutorials for paper writing. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: The theory of Bernoulli and allied polynomials (779 KB). Contents: The Theory of Bernoulli and Allied Polynomials; The Theory of the Gamma and Related Functions; The Theory of the Lipschitz-Lerch Transcendent; Elucidation of Zeta-Identities; Hypergeometric Functions and Zeta-Functions; The Theory of Bessel Functions and the Epstein Zeta-Functions; The Theory of Arithmetical Fourier Series and the Parseval Identities; Around the Dirichlet L-Functions and the Deninger R-Function. Book excerpt: Pedagogical insights gained through 30 years of teaching applied mathematics led the author to write this set of student oriented books. Topics such as complex analysis, matrix theory, vector and tensor analysis, Fourier analysis, integral transforms, ordinary and partial differential equations are presented in a discursive style that is readable and easy to follow. Numerous examples, completely worked out, together with carefully selected problem sets with answers are used to enhance students' understanding and manipulative skill. The goal is to make students comfortable in using advanced mathematical tools in junior, senior, and beginning graduate courses.

Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to recent developments in the theory of generalized harmonic analysis and its applications. It is well known that convolutions, differential operators and diffusion processes are interconnected: the ordinary convolution commutes with the Laplacian, and the law of Brownian motion has a convolution semigroup property with respect to the ordinary convolution. Seeking to generalize this useful connection, and also motivated by its probabilistic applications, the book focuses on the following question: given a diffusion process Xt on a metric space E, can we construct a convolution-like operator * on the space of probability measures on E with respect to which the law of Xt has the *-convolution semigroup property? A detailed analysis highlights the connection between the construction of convolution-like structures and disciplines such as stochastic processes, ordinary and partial differential equations, spectral theory, special functions and integral transforms. The book will be valuable for graduate students and researchers interested in the intersections between harmonic analysis, probability theory and differential equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives introductory chapters on the classical basic and standard methods for asymptotic analysis, such as Watson's lemma, Laplace's method, the saddle point and steepest descent methods, stationary phase and Darboux's method. The methods, explained in great detail, will obtain asymptotic approximations of the well-known special functions of mathematical physics and probability theory. After these introductory chapters, the methods of uniform asymptotic analysis are described in which several parameters have influence on typical phenomena: turning points and transition points, coinciding saddle and singularities. In all these examples, the special functions are indicated that describe the peculiar behavior of the integrals. The text extensively covers the classical methods with an emphasis on how to obtain expansions, and how to use the results for numerical methods, in particular for approximating special functions. In this way, we work with a computational mind: how can we use certain expansions in numerical analysis and in computer programs, how can we compute coefficients, and so on.
