Book Synopsis Small Countries in a Big Power World: The Belgian-Dutch Conflict at Versailles, 1919 by : H.P. van Tuyll
Download or read book Small Countries in a Big Power World: The Belgian-Dutch Conflict at Versailles, 1919 written by H.P. van Tuyll and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a devastated Belgium emerged from World War I, some of its leaders had high hopes that the upcoming negotiations would enable achievement of a long-cherished goal; annexing parts of the Netherlands lost in the final 1839 settlement which had established the country. Belgium’s strong historical and military arguments were bolstered by its courageous Great War image. Yet the Dutch proved ready and able to launch an energetic counterattack which ultimately stymied the Belgian campaign. This book explains why and how this happened, and demonstrates that small states are active participants in their own destinies, not just spectators or victims.
Book Synopsis The Great War in Belgium and the Netherlands by : Felicity Rash
Download or read book The Great War in Belgium and the Netherlands written by Felicity Rash and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the many avenues that are still left unexplored when it comes to our understanding of the First World War in the Low Countries. With the ongoing the centenary of the Great War, many events have been organized in the United Kingdom to commemorate its military events, its socio-political consequences, and its cultural legacy. Of these events, very few have paid attention to the fates of Belgium or the Netherlands, even though it was the invasion of Belgium in August 1914 that was the catalyst for Great Britain declaring war. The occupation of Belgium had long-term consequences for its people, but much of the military and social history of the Western Front concentrates on northern France, and the Netherlands is largely forgotten as a nation affected by the First World War. By opening the field beyond the military and beyond the front, this collection explores the interdisciplinary and international nature of the Great War.
Book Synopsis The House of Orange in Revolution and War by : Jeroen Koch
Download or read book The House of Orange in Revolution and War written by Jeroen Koch and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2022-06-06 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epic account of the House of Orange-Nassau over one hundred and fifty years of European history. Three rulers from the House of Orange-Nassau reigned over the Netherlands from 1813 to 1890: King William I from 1813 to 1840, King William II from 1840 to 1849, and King William III from 1849 to 1890. Theirs is an epic tale of joy and tragedy, progress and catastrophe, disappointment and glory—all set against the backdrop of a Europe plagued by war and revolution. The House of Orange in Revolution and War relates one and a half centuries of House of Orange history in a gripping narrative, leading the reader from the last stadholders of the Dutch Republic to the modern monarchy of the early twentieth century, from the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars to World War I and the European Revolutions that came after it.
Book Synopsis The Nationality of Ships by : Herman Meyers
Download or read book The Nationality of Ships written by Herman Meyers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It gives me great pleasure to introduce this work by Dr. H. Meyers. The problem of "The Nationality of Ships" has long been one of the most difficult problems in the international law of the sea. It has been made more acute recently by the growth of "flags of convenience". Legally, the problem has been complicated or simplified-according to one's point of view-by the emergence of the concept of the "genuine link" associated with the Judgment of the International Court of Justice in the Nottebohm case (second phase) in 1955. Other develop ments have included the thorough preparatory work of the Internation al Law Commission leading up to the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea, held in Geneva in 1958; the debates at that Con ference and particularly its adoption of the Convention on the High Seas; and finally the Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice in the case concerning the Constitution of the Maritime Safety Committee of the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organisation in 1960. All these developments have thrown light on the problem ofthe allocation of ships to one or other of the politically organised territorial communities (or States) of which the present international society is largely composed. But an agreed solution acceptable to all the interests concerned seems as far away as ever. The question of ships operated by international institutions such as the United Nations is another problem which awaits a satisfactory answer.

Download or read book Abraham Kuyper: An Annotated Bibliography 1857-2010 written by Rev. Tjitze Kuipers and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-09-20 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography of Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920), Dutch theologian, journalist, and politician, and above all prolific writer, is the result of a life-long research. Kuyper’s publications range from daily editorials in newspapers, via pamphlets on present-day issues and a 1000-page political program, to academic publications like an encyclopedia of theology. His works were ground laying for the neo-Calvinist tradition in the Netherlands, the United States, Asia, and Africa. This is the first bibliography of his works in English, and also the first all-encompassing bibliography, including all editions and translations. It has been organized chronologically and each item contains bibliographical data and apt information about contents and context. This is an indispensible academic tool for researchers of Kuyper and the neo-Calvinist tradition.
Book Synopsis Unspoken Allies by : Nigel John Ashton
Download or read book Unspoken Allies written by Nigel John Ashton and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study brings together the expertise of an international group of scholars to survey the development of political and economic relations between Britain and the Netherlands from the Napoleonic era to the present day. It illuminates both the underlying refrain of harmony in international outlook, ideology and interests that often made for close co-operation between the two countries, and also their episodic instances of conflict. The contributors address topics ranging from Anglo-Dutch relations in the era of imperialism; the tensions created by Dutch neutrality in the First World; the challenges of the inter-war years; the role of the Dutch in British strategy during the Second World War; colonialism and decolonisation; and, most recently, bilateral relations in the European framework. Based on detailed research in British and Dutch archives, Unspoken Allies provides new insights into relations between two of the principal "amphibious" powers of Europe across the last two centuries.
Book Synopsis The Netherlands and World War I by : Hubert van Tuyll van Serooskerken
Download or read book The Netherlands and World War I written by Hubert van Tuyll van Serooskerken and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War I the Netherlands was situated squarely between two warring great powers, Britain and Germany, and on the edge of the war zone itself. Isolationism was impossible; strict neutrality was inadequate. The Netherlands nevertheless escaped the war, mainly because of its own actions. This book is the story of the people who managed this escape. The first part of the book examines the pre-war situation, espionage against Germany, and the mobilization of 1914. Succeeding chapters cover the military-diplomatic balancing act during the war, the attempted revolution of 1918, and the near-disaster at Versailles. The book concludes with a consideration of major issues. This work is intended to appeal to a broad audience, including students of World War I, modern European history, diplomatic history, military history, and peace studies.
