Book Synopsis Transforming English Rural Society by : John Broad
Download or read book Transforming English Rural Society written by John Broad and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-22 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1540 and 1920 the English elite transformed the countryside and landscape by building up landed estates which were concentrated around their country houses. John Broad's study of the Verney family of Middle Claydon in Buckinghamshire demonstrates two sides of that process. Charting the family's rise to wealth impelled by a strong dynastic imperative, Broad shows how the Verneys sought out heiress marriages to expand wealth and income. In parallel, he shows how the family managed its estates to maximize income and transformed three local village communities, creating a pattern of 'open' and 'closed' villages familiar to nineteenth-century commentators. Based on the formidable Verney family archive with its abundant correspondence, this book also examines the world of poor relief, farming families as well as strategies for estate expansion and social enhancement. It will appeal to anyone interested in the English countryside as a dynamic force in social and economic history.

Book Synopsis The Estates of the English Crown, 1558-1640 by : R. W. Hoyle
Download or read book The Estates of the English Crown, 1558-1640 written by R. W. Hoyle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-08 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays is the first full account of the largest estate in early modern England, against which the fortunes of all other estates may be judged. Previous accounts have tended to regard the Crown lands as a resource to be plundered by successive monarchs in times of need: much of the monastic land confiscated by Henry VIII had been sold by the time of his death, and the estates had mostly been liquidated to meet the demands of expenditure by 1640. It is not denied in these essays that the estates suffered from the attrition of periodic sale, but the estates are also seen as a continuing enterprise of complexity and sophistication. Each essay is concerned with the dialogue between the Exchequer and its local administrators and tenants. The success and failure of initiatives launched by the Exchequer is illustrated by examples drawn from many communities throughout England.

Download or read book Rural England written by Joan Thirsk and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From prehistory to the present day, our landscape has been transformed by successive periods of human activity, triggered by the rise and fall of populations and their need to be fed, housed, and employed. These changes have built up layers of evidence which offer historians exciting insightsinto land use through the centuries and how rural communities of the past lived their lives. In this ground-breaking study - published in hardback as The English Rural Landscape and now available in paperback - Joan Thirsk and her team of distinguished contributors, many of whom live in the places they describe, invite us to explore the historical richness of the English landscape. Eachchapter synthesizes the latest thinking and provides fresh perspectives on its subject. It is the first book since W. G. Hoskins' definitive study The Making of the English Landscape, published nearly 50 years ago, to do so. The first ten chapters describe the characteristic features of the main landscape types, including fenland, downland, woodland, marshland, and moorland. However geographically scattered areas of a particular landscape type are, they have often been moulded by successive generations in ways that haveproduced strong physical similarities. The second part of the book is made up of five cameo features, each exploring an individual place in detail: the people and the distinctive histories that shaped them. These include the Land Settlement experimental village of Fen Drayton, set up during the Great Depression in the 1930s, and surveysof the very different settlements of Hook Norton in North Oxfordshire and Staintondale in North Yorkshire. Rural England: A History of the Landscape shows us how much of the rural past is still visible if we choose to dig for it. It illustrates how we might go about exploring it for ourselves. It is the definitive work on the history of the English landscape for all would-be landscape and local historydetectives, professional and amateur alike.

Book Synopsis The Management of Special Needs in Ordinary Schools by : Neville Jones
Download or read book The Management of Special Needs in Ordinary Schools written by Neville Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The management of special needs, especially those of students of secondary age, has received considerable attention in the past decade and, in the light of the new education legislation, will assume a new urgency. The Management of Special Needs in Ordinary Schools provides an overview of the issues facing teachers in secondary schools with pupils who have special needs. These issues include managerial and curricular problems, in-service training, the use of new technology and developing community links. The book also illustrates the changes in thinking and practice since the publication of the Warnock Report, Special Educational Needs (1978). The contributors range from teacher to chief education officer, and include headteachers, psychologists, advisors and administrators, as well as those involved in educational research. Drawing on their experience in the mainstream and in special schools, at secondary level and in further education, their contributions reflect an active involvement in the development of new approaches within this area of education. The educational experiences of those with special needs can be considerably broadened and enhanced through imaginative management and skilful use of resources. The book therefore emphasises practical approaches to the day-to-day and longer-term needs of pupils with disabilities in ordinary schools. All those working within this area will find much of relevance to their own work.
