Book Synopsis Feminist Transformations and Domestic Violence Activism in Divided Berlin, 1968-2002 by : Jane Freeland
Download or read book Feminist Transformations and Domestic Violence Activism in Divided Berlin, 1968-2002 written by Jane Freeland and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-08 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first in-depth historical study of feminist activism against domestic violence in divided Berlin between 1968 and 2002. Starting in the 1970s, feminists in West and then East Berlin campaigned against domestic violence as a key issue of women's inequality. They exposed the harmful gender norms that left women unprotected and vulnerable to abuse in the home and called for this to change. Indeed, domestic violence has been one of the issues most effectively addressed by the women's movement in Germany. Since the first shelter opened in West Berlin in 1976, women's shelters have spread throughout the country, and today up to 45,000 women a year turn to emergency housing in Germany, with many more accessing helplines and crisis centres. Situating domestic violence activism within a broader history of feminism in post-war Germany, Feminist Transformations traces the evolution of this movement both across political division and reunification and from grassroots campaign to established, professionalised social service. In doing so, it brings the histories of feminism in East and West Berlin together for the first time and explores how feminism successfully changed women's rights in Germany. But it also asks what popular and political support for domestic violence activism has meant for feminism and the advancement of women's rights more broadly. Examining the trajectory of feminism in Germany, Jane Freeland reveals the limitations of gender equality as advancements in women's rights were often built on the reassertion of patriarchal gender roles.
Book Synopsis Varieties of Feminism by : Myra Ferree
Download or read book Varieties of Feminism written by Myra Ferree and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-07 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Varieties of Feminism investigates the development of German feminism by contrasting it with women's movements that arise in countries, like the United States, committed to liberalism. With both conservative Christian and social democratic principles framing the feminist discourses and movement goals, which in turn shape public policy gains, Germany provides a tantalizing case study of gender politics done differently. The German feminist trajectory reflects new political opportunities created first by national reunification and later, by European Union integration, as well as by historically established assumptions about social justice, family values, and state responsibility for the common good. Tracing the opportunities, constraints, and conflicts generated by using class struggle as the framework for gender mobilization—juxtaposing this with the liberal tradition where gender and race are more typically framed as similar—Ferree reveals how German feminists developed strategies and movement priorities quite different from those in the United States.

Book Synopsis Gender Equality in Context by : Brigitte Liebig
Download or read book Gender Equality in Context written by Brigitte Liebig and published by Verlag Barbara Budrich. This book was released on 2016-01-18 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender Equality has not yet been achieved in many western countries. Switzerland in particular has failed as a forerunner in integrating women in politics and economy. Taking Switzerland as a case study, the authors critically reflect the state of gender equality in different policy areas such as education, family and labour. The collection of articles reveals how gender policies and cultural contexts interact with social practices of gender (in)equality. They also outline the gender(ed) effects of recent changes and reform strategies for scientists, politicians and practitioners.
Download or read book Undoing Harm written by Mona Eliasson and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Men who use violence against women (ex- ) partners, constitutes a problem not only for the women but for all of society. Different kinds of approaches are necessary to protect victims, stop ongoing violence, and prevent both repetition and initiation of violent acts to control, frighten and dominate women. Efficient programs have been developed and tried in different countries. In this volume comprehensive assessments of needed interventions are presented together with research on the efficacy of programs by an international group of scholars from the field. Altogether there are obvious differences in legal contexts, philosophies, and experiences in different countries, results show that the combination of a legal and a re-educational approach is both necessary and most effective for reforming most groups of violent men. The combination of a carefully planned approach based on current knowledge and equally careful assessments and follow-ups over longer periods of time seems to give the best results. Research from a broad social and cultural perspective, including gender in-equalities, can also be a tool for application and refining knowledge to improve interventions and reform violent men.

The broad-based collaboration of contributors reflects an equally wide range of theoretical underpinnings and methodological choices with a three-fold goal: first, to provide unique opportunities to network across disciplines and redirect established ways of thinking; second, to examine the -added value- of work generated within European cultural contexts and disseminate it to an international audience; and finally, to stimulate innovative thinking and serve as a springboard for joint creative projects that benefit from cross-national or interdisciplinary research.

This book was released on 2003-04-07 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
