Book Synopsis The Mathematical Biology of Diatoms by : Janice L. Pappas
Download or read book The Mathematical Biology of Diatoms written by Janice L. Pappas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE MATHEMATICAL BIOLOGY OF DIATOMS This book contains unique, advanced applications using mathematics, algorithmic techniques, geometric analysis, and other computational methods in diatom research. Historically, diatom research has centered on taxonomy and systematics. While these topics are of the utmost importance, other aspects of this important group of unicells have been increasingly explored in the biological sciences. While mathematical applications are still rare, they are starting take hold and provide an extensive avenue of new diatom research, including applications in multidisciplinary fields. The work contained in this volume is an eclectic mix of analytical studies on diatoms. Mathematical treatment of the various biological disciplines covered in this book range from implicit, but succinct studies to more elaborate detailed computational studies. Topics include growth models, nanostructure, nanoengineering, cell growth, araphid diatoms, valve ontogeny, diatom metabolism, diatom motility, synchronization, diatom kinematics, photonics, biogenic sensors, photochemistry, diatom light response, colony growth, siliceous unicells, algal kinetics, diatom structure, diatom imaging, functional morphology, geometric structure, biomineralization, high-resolution imaging, non-destructive imaging, and 3D structure. This wide-ranging volume provides an introductory as well as an advanced treatment of recent interests in diatom research. The mathematical research in this volume may be applicable to studies of other unicells, biomechanics, biological processes, physio-chemical analyses, or nanoscience.
Book Synopsis Catalogue of the Benthic Marine Algae of the Indian Ocean by : Paul C. Silva
Download or read book Catalogue of the Benthic Marine Algae of the Indian Ocean written by Paul C. Silva and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1996-09-22 with total page 1276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue, which integrates nearly 35,000 records of benthic marine algae from the Indian Ocean into a taxonomic classification comprising 3,355 specific and infraspecific taxa in 629 genera, will greatly facilitate future work in this region. The bibliography of 4,000 references is the largest list of phycological literature ever published. The extensive taxonomic and nomenclatural notes are of paramount importance.

Book Synopsis Doing Integrated History and Philosophy of Science: A Case Study of the Origin of Genetics by : Yafeng Shan
Download or read book Doing Integrated History and Philosophy of Science: A Case Study of the Origin of Genetics written by Yafeng Shan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-17 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an integrated historical and philosophical examination of the origin of genetics. The author contends that an integrated HPS analysis helps us to have a better understanding of the history of genetics, and sheds light on some general issues in the philosophy of science. This book consists of three parts. It begins with historical problems, revisiting the significance of the work of Mendel, de Vries, and Weldon. Then it turns to integrated HPS problems, developing an exemplar-based analysis of the development and the progress in early genetics. Finally, it discusses philosophical problems: conceptual change, evidence, and theory choice. Part I lays out a new historiography, serving as a basis for the discussions in part II and part III. Part II introduces a new integrated HPS method to analyse and interpret the historiography in Part I and to re-examine the philosophical issues in Part III. Part III develops new philosophical accounts which will in turn make a better sense of the history of scientific practice more generally. This book provides a practical defence of integrated HPS: the best way to defend integrated HPS is to do it.

Book Synopsis Advances in Microbiology by : P.C. Trivedi
Download or read book Advances in Microbiology written by P.C. Trivedi and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbiologist have made significant contributions to basic biological sciences as well as in the applied areas of public health and medical sciences, agriculture, industry and environmental sciences. The most dramatic current development in applied microbiology is due to development of genetic engineering and recombinant DNA technology. The book "Advances in Microbiology" provides a comprehensive and critical review of the work done on different areas of microbiology including agriculture, industry, medical science, bioremediation etc. The book contains 24 chapters. Chapters cover information on the status of microbial diversity, application of biosensors, Azolla as biofertilizer, Frank/a - nitrogen fixing actinomycetes, extraction of metals from ores using bacteria, alkaliphiles, citirc acid fermentation, biodiversity of cyanobacteria, microbial degradation of xenobiotics etc. Aspects, covering biotechnological applications of microbes for improved plant productivity and new approaches for development of vaccines have been specially included to project their role and use in the twenty-first century. Comprehensive account of microbes in the management of soil borne diseases and plant parasitic nematodes throw light on the importance of microbes in the management of plant pests. This book will be useful to researchers, teachers and students of Microbiology, Botany, Zoology and Agriculture.
