Download or read book Nematodes as Environmental Indicators written by Michael John Wilson and published by CABI. This book was released on 2009 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nematodes are the most wide spread multicellular animals in nature and analysis of nematodes in terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments as well as their role and function in ecosystems, can be used for environmental monitoring. Compared to other organisms, they offer the greatest potential as bioindicators and can be used to study gene expression in relation to environmental challenges, to monitor changing impacts on the environment and in laboratory ecotoxicity tests. This volume addresses classical and molecular approaches to nematode community analysis, the contemporary field of nematodes as biosensors, as well as genomic aspects of nematode bioindicators. In addition, the case studies stress the importance of these bioindicators and demonstrate the commercial potential of these technologies.

Book Synopsis Ecology of Freshwater Nematodes by : Walter Traunspurger
Download or read book Ecology of Freshwater Nematodes written by Walter Traunspurger and published by CABI. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nematodes are incontestably the most numerous and the most diverse metazoans in freshwater habitats, and these properties bestow exceptional significance to their role in the environment. An array of functional roles has been attributed to them: they are grazers on bacteria and primary producers, regulators of decomposition of plant material, predators, prey for other animals, and closely associated symbionts of bacteria and other organisms. Freshwater nematodes are central in the context of environmental monitoring, pollution assessments, global warming and food webs, and this is increasingly being recognized. Moreover, the short generation time (a few days to months) of many species makes nematodes ideal for laboratory studies. This book offers guidelines for studying the ecology of free-living nematodes, including detailed protocols and case studies.

Book Synopsis Freshwater Nematodes by : Eyualem Abebe
Download or read book Freshwater Nematodes written by Eyualem Abebe and published by CABI. This book was released on 2006 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains 22 chapters on various aspects of freshwater nematode ecology and taxonomy. Subjects covered include the techniques for processing freshwater nematodes, the composition and distribution of free living freshwater nematodes, their abundance, biomass and diversity, the production of freshwater nematodes, their feeding ecology, patterns in size structure of freshwater nematode communities, different nematode habitats, and computation and application of nematode community indices. It provides descriptions with figures of each taxon at the genus level and above to currently valid genera. For every genus, a complete list of species, with an emphasis on biogeography, is given for primarily freshwater taxa and a list of only those species reported from freshwater bodies is given for the genera that are considered primarily non-freshwater. This book is intended to provide a useful reference to students, beginners and established researchers in the field of freshwater nematology, benthologists, invertebrate biologists, limnologists, ecologists, microbiologists and soil biologists.

Book Synopsis Free-living Marine Nematodes from the East China Sea by : Yong Huang
Download or read book Free-living Marine Nematodes from the East China Sea written by Yong Huang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-27 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and illustrates 300 species of free-living marine nematodes from the East China Sea and includes eighteen new species. Free-living marine nematode is the most dominant and diverse meiofaunal group in marine benthic habitats. It has strong adaptability and wide distribution, and plays a very important role in the material circulation and energy flow of benthic ecosystem. Up to now, about 7,000 species of free-living marine forms (attached to 2 Class, 8 Order, 86 Family, 662 genera) have been recorded around the world. Some 500 species have so far been reported from the sea areas of China. Among them, more than 300 species were identified from the East China Sea. The book will provide basic data and information of free-living marine nematodes for ecosystem management, protection and utilization of marine biological resources in the East China Sea.

Book excerpt: Nematodes are the most numerous metazoans in aquatic sediments. The majority of conducted studies on these aquatic forms focus mainly on those in marine and estuarine habitats. Nematodes from inland water bodies have been relatively forgotten or ignored.
Book Synopsis Marine Nematode Ecology Vol II by : Nasira Kazi
Download or read book Marine Nematode Ecology Vol II written by Nasira Kazi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meiofauna is the major metazoan component of benthic ecosystem. Within the meiobenthos free living marine nematodes are an excellent taxon for use as an ecological indicator of benthic environments. The present book provides information about the ecology of marine nematode in the coastal and inshore waters of Arabian Sea, Pakistan. It includes the selected locations along the coastline of the Sindh and Balochistan. Certain environmental parameters were also taken into consideration. Assessment of marine nematode fauna in pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons for three consecutive years showed variations in nematodes faunal composition. In trophic group composition epistrate feeder were found as the dominant group. The response of marine nematode community to heavy metal contamination and their co-relation analysis with mean nematode density showed significant negative co-relation with some environmental parameters and heavy metals in the samples. The marine nematode fauna associated in the mudflats of mangrove swamps were also investigated. This book gives the first report on the community structure of free living marine nematodes from northern Arabian Sea of Pakistan.

Book Synopsis Entomopathogenic Nematodes and Their Symbiotic Bacteria by : S. Sivaramakrishnan
Download or read book Entomopathogenic Nematodes and Their Symbiotic Bacteria written by S. Sivaramakrishnan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides basic information and different protocols associated with the Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) and their symbiotic bacteria. Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) of the genera Steinernema and Heterorhabditis and their associated bacterial symbionts Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus aid nematode infective juveniles (IJs) in infecting and killing their insect hosts, creating a unique tripartite complex of host-vector-symbiont interactions. Due to this insect killing capability, EPNs are used as biological control agents of economically important insect pests. They are also a model system to study host-parasite interactions. It provides a systematic approach to various nematode procedures including pathogenicity, reproduction, foraging behaviour. It gives a brief outline on historical aspects, nematode-bacterium complex, biology and chemical ecology of EPNs. It concisely describes host insect rearing, nematode sampling and storage, isolation techniques, counting, handling and staining of nematodes, characterization including morphological, molecular and ecological studies, mass production, virulence bioassay, field application and efficacy. The book also includes methods and techniques for their associated symbiotic bacteria. This book serves as a laboratory manual and assists the readers to undertake advanced research in different aspects related to nematodes. It is useful for researchers in the fields of nematology, microbiology, bacteriology and entomology.
