Book excerpt: I am pleased to share the story of my life with you and hope to take you along with me when I retrace my steps and read my story along the way. I hope and trust that you will find it interesting, informative and educational. In the process I intend to give a brief picture of the social and political climate which surrounded my life and had played an important role in my thinking and eventually molding my course of action. I faced many occasions in my life where my decisions drastically changed the course of history for me. I am fortunate that my spirit of adventurism and self confidence has, by and large, been a source of satisfaction for me in my actions. I have been a fairly quick decision maker all my life and do not go into deep and lengthy sessions of contemplation and brooding. I give a very serious thought and due deliberations to the situation at hand but will not delay making a decision if that is what is required on the occasion. During the course of my journey of life I have endeavored to chart out and set the goals for myself but did not hesitate to change course to accommodate and answer to the call of the time and compromise with the inevitable human weaknesses and the forces of nature and destiny. I also intend to touch on some incidents of personal nature which I always avoided to talk about with my dear ones including my parents and siblings. These incidents, undoubtedly, influenced my thinking and had a profound effect on my perception of things which came my way during my journey of life.

But heartbreak and betrayal would bring the worlds of Knockglen and Dublin into explosive collision. Long-hidden lies would emerge to test the meaning of love and the strength of ties held within the fragile gold bands of a. . . Circle Of Friends. Benny thinks he has found his calling. After he arrives at the monastery, Benny is shocked to discover only one resident monk. Albert, the monastery's Superior, is on the verge of closing the monastery. After he meets Benny, though, and realizes his intentions are pure, he decides to teach him the holy ropes. While Benny is coming to grips with the realization that entering the priesthood is not like joining the Elks or Boy Scouts, unsavory characters from his old neighborhood learn that the last surviving member of St. Sebastian will have the honor of disposing of the monastery. As Irish, Felix, Goldie, and Marko join the order with the hopes of cashing in on the sale, Benny prays he has the foresight to lead all the men in the right direction and do what it takes to keep the monastery open.

Will their mother’s revelations bring them back together or leave them feeling more lost than ever? Charmaine Wilkerson’s debut novel is a story of how the inheritance of betrayals, secrets, memories, and even names can shape relationships and history. Book excerpt: In The Blue Last, Richard Jury finally faces the last thing in the world he wants to deal with—the war that killed his mother, his father, his childhood. Mickey Haggerty, a DCI with the London City police, has asked for Jury's help. Two skeletons have been unearthed in the City during the excavation of London's last bombsite, where once a pub stood called the The Blue Last. Mickey believes that a child who survived the bombing has been posing for over fifty years as a child who didn't. The grandchild of brewery magnet Oliver Tyndale supposedly survived that December 1940 bombing . . . but did she? Mickey also has a murder to solve. Simon Croft, prosperous City financial broker, and son of the one-time owner of The Blue Last is found shot to death in his Thames-side house. But the book he was writing about London during the German blitzkrieg has disappeared. Jury wants to get eyes and ears into Tynedale Lodge, and looks to his friend, Melrose Plant, to play the role. Reluctantly, Plant plays it, accompanied on his rounds of the Lodge gardens by nine-year-old Gemma Trim, orphan and ward of Oliver Tynedale; and Benny Keagan, a resourceful twelve-year-old orphaned delivery boy. And Richard Jury may not make it out alive. A stolen book, stolen lives, or is any of this what it seems? Identity, memory, provenance - these are all called into question in The Blue Last
