Book excerpt: "Playing at Chess is the most ancient and the most universal game among men, for its original is beyond the memory of history." Benjamin Franklin penned these words as an introduction to his famous essay "The Morals of Chess." Franklin's approach to the game was in distinct contrast to his predecessors, who seriously advocated all the subtle treacheries of the art of poor sportsmanship with the sole end of attaining victory. To Franklin, however, the game of chess was not mere idle amusement but a sport reflective of life itself—"for life is a kind of chess, in which we have often points to gain and competitors or adversaries to contend with"—which requires the utilization of all the finest mental and moral qualities of which man is capable. This volume reproduces Franklin's celebrated essay and includes an analysis of everything Franklin ever had to say about chess. The second part of the book contains an extensive bibliography of chess in America to the year 1859. The two sections of the volume combine to form an essential sourcebook for the historian of American chess.

Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Benjamin Franklin was one of the most famous Americans of his era, and even today he remains one of the most adored and respected of Americans of all time. People around the world know the story of his famous kite flight, and even before the American Revolution he was already well-loved in Europe. When most of us hear his name, it evokes many things: his several groundbreaking inventions, some of America's first newspapers and libraries, America's first fire department, his crucial role in the War for Independence and the Constitutional Convention, and a huge body of clever words of wisdom. These are the most well-known aspects of his life, but Benjamin Franklin was an extraordinarily complex man. There are many extremely interesting, even paradoxical, things we know about his life that aren't common knowledge, both in his public life and in his private life. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Many of Benjamin Franklin's most well-known inventions are used by hundreds of millions of people around the world. If you wear glasses, there's a reasonable chance you have bifocals. Benjamin Franklin invented bifocals. If you live in a tall building, it probably has a lightning-rod to keep it safe from lightning, and of course the lightning rod is arguably Franklin's most famous invention. You've probably heard a thousand times the story of his famous experiments with storing electric charge derived from a kite (and later a metal pole) pointing up into the sky. Even within science he contributed to multiple fields, being the first person to chart out the paths of the Atlantic currents. He realized that what people thought were two different types of electricity were actually different aspects of the same thing, which he named "positive" and "negative." To this day, that's the reason why each end of a battery is labeled with a plus sign and a minus sign. He was also one of the few intellectuals of his time to support the wave theory of light, which would later gain popularity and be reconciled with the particle theory of light in the form of quantum mechanics. Beyond his contributions to science, Franklin had an impact in many other arenas as well. He was the first chess player known by name in the American Colonies and contributed articles on the game to various publications. His autobiography is also one of the most famous and most well-respected autobiographies ever written, and his contributions to the printing industry in America are immeasurable. He started many of the earliest and most significant printing shops in the Colonies, and many of his written works, especially his Almanack, are considered major contributions to world culture. He was also known to dabble in music, inventing a mechanized version of the glass armonica and composing a bit in the classical style. Buy the book to continue reading! Follow @hyperink on Twitter! Book excerpt: Soon to be a streaming series ● In this dazzling work of history, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author follows Benjamin Franklin to France for the crowning achievement of his career In December of 1776 a small boat delivered an old man to France." So begins an enthralling narrative account of how Benjamin Franklin--seventy years old, without any diplomatic training, and possessed of the most rudimentary French--convinced France, an absolute monarchy, to underwrite America's experiment in democracy. When Franklin stepped onto French soil, he well understood he was embarking on the greatest gamble of his career. By virtue of fame, charisma, and ingenuity, Franklin outmaneuvered British spies, French informers, and hostile colleagues; engineered the Franco-American alliance of 1778; and helped to negotiate the peace of 1783. The eight-year French mission stands not only as Franklin's most vital service to his country but as the most revealing of the man. In A Great Improvisation, Stacy Schiff draws from new and little-known sources to illuminate the least-explored part of Franklin's life. Here is an unfamiliar, unforgettable chapter of the Revolution, a rousing tale of American infighting, and the treacherous backroom dealings at Versailles that would propel George Washington from near decimation at Valley Forge to victory at Yorktown. From these pages emerge a particularly human and yet fiercely determined Founding Father, as well as a profound sense of how fragile, improvisational, and international was our country's bid for independence.

Book excerpt: PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST • Benjamin Franklin, perhaps the pivotal figure in colonial and revolutionary America, comes vividly to life in this “thorough biography of ... America’s first Renaissance man” (The Washington Post) by the two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, bestselling historian, and author of Our First Civil War. "The authoritative Franklin biography for our time.” —Joseph J. Ellis, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Founding Brothers Wit, diplomat, scientist, philosopher, businessman, inventor, and bon vivant, Benjamin Franklin's "life is one every American should know well, and it has not been told better than by Mr. Brands" (The Dallas Morning News). From penniless runaway to highly successful printer, from ardently loyal subject of Britain to architect of an alliance with France that ensured America’s independence, Franklin went from obscurity to become one of the world’s most admired figures, whose circle included the likes of Voltaire, Hume, Burke, and Kant. Drawing on previously unpublished letters and a host of other sources, acclaimed historian H. W. Brands has written a thoroughly engaging biography of the eighteenth-century genius. A much needed reminder of Franklin’s greatness and humanity, The First American is a work of meticulous scholarship that provides a magnificent tour of a legendary historical figure, a vital era in American life, and the countless arenas in which the protean Franklin left his legacy. Look for H.W. Brands's other biographies: ANDREW JACKSON, THE MAN WHO SAVED THE UNION (Ulysses S. Grant), TRAITOR TO HIS CLASS (Franklin Roosevelt) and REAGAN.
