Download or read book Kāma's Flowers written by Valerie Ritter and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kama's Flowers documents the transformation of Hindi poetry during the crucial period of 1885-1925. As Hindi was becoming a national language and Indian nationalism was emerging, Hindi authors articulated a North Indian version of modernity by reenvisioning nature. While their writing has previously been seen as an imitation of European Romanticism, Valerie Ritter shows its unique and particular function in North India. Description of the natural world recalled traditional poetics, particularly erotic and devotional poetics, but was now used to address sociopolitical concerns, as authors created literature to advocate for a "national character" and to address a growing audience of female readers. Examining Hindi classics, translations from English poetry, literary criticism, and little-known popular works, Ritter combines translations with fresh literary analysis to show the pivotal role of nature in how modernity was understood. Bringing a new body of literature to English-language readers, Kama's Flowers also reveals the origins of an influential visual culture that resonates today in Bollywood cinema.
Book Synopsis White Tongue, Brown Skin by : Maya Boutaghou
Download or read book White Tongue, Brown Skin written by Maya Boutaghou and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2024-11-15 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the effect of prescribed multilingualism as expressed by women writers in colonial contexts What does it mean to be an heir, as a woman writer, to colonial and postcolonial cultures in which European language has become so thoroughly ingrained? Examining women writers from India (Toru Dutt), Egypt (Mayy Ziyadah), Algeria (Assia Djebar), and Mauritius (Ananda Devi), White Tongue, Brown Skin sheds light on the essential double nature of the colonial experience. Maya Boutaghou’s latest book—her first in English—treats colonialism as analogous to a disease, manifesting itself in symptoms of multilingualism and cultural pluralism. Boutaghou shows how violently imposed multilingualism engenders in the mind of the colonized subject a state of permanent self-translation between two or more languages with unequal political and emotional power. They must endure a plural perception of the self, defined by the restless movement of self-translation, which becomes reflected in a literary dynamic frequently overlooked or misunderstood by previous scholarship. Although the object is philosophical, this book is also deeply rooted in history. Understanding postcolonialism from below, as Boutaghou demonstrates, starts with an approach based on close readings in specific historical contexts.

Book Synopsis Dawn of a New Discovery by : John Scott
Download or read book Dawn of a New Discovery written by John Scott and published by JohnScott. This book was released on 2009-08-12 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for doing this book came from teaching inner-city students in Newark, NJ, and realizing from that experience that poetry--its writing and reading--is a great medium for not just self-expression, but for recognizing and giving vent to the turbulent frustration and anger that children and teenagers endure in the growing-up process. this book has approximately 130 original and collected poems, as well as a how-to section in most chapters, 17 famous poets and short biographies. It also has a number of poems from children and students from Newark, NJ and other places in NJ and the world. The first chapter has 26 poems of India, SriLanka, Bangladesh, North Africa, China and other exotic places. Each chapter also has a small section for the reader to write his or her own poetry. The book is designed to engage the reader in far away travel, as well as to develop an interest in poetry and learn a little about writing it in the process. It was made for adults and thoughtful teens.
Book Synopsis The Four Moons in the Human Body by : Dr. Siddhartha Ganguli
Download or read book The Four Moons in the Human Body written by Dr. Siddhartha Ganguli and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2023-10-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bauls & Fakirs of Bengal and Bangladesh certainly constitute a breed, different from other ethnic religious sects. They do not believe in worshipping in any citadel of religion like a temple, a mosque, or a church. They have the conviction that the body itself is the habitat of cosmic energy and also that the entire cosmos is present in a living body. They compare the body with a cage and the soul with an unknown bird which has come to stay for some time only. Most of the Bauls, who are not just singers but serious followers of the Baul path, do not believe in replication—creating any future progeny. They adopt special procedures for sexual union with menstruated female partners to retain the semen without losing it. To learn this very special technique which they do not share with any one, they have to take the help of learned and experienced Gurus who also teach them weird rituals like ‘Chari Chandra Bhed’ which involves consumption of semen, menstrual blood, urine and faeces. These folk medicine practices help them to keep diseases away and maintain good health. There have been lot of surveys and studies on the Bauls & Fakirs—primarily of historical, religious and sociological nature. This book goes a little deep to look at their songs, lifestyle, philosophy & practices from biological, psychological & management angles to establish that the Baulsphere is based on concepts and practices that have been proven scientific from modern research studies.
