Download or read book Benefits of Recreation Therapy Programming in Organizations that Offer Services to Youth written by Jessica M. Britt and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recreation Therapy (RT) is extremely prevalent in organizations that provide care to older patients, specifically in nursing home facilities. However, RT is not prevalent in facilities that provide care to youth. Of the age groups served, pediatrics and adolescents cover only seven percent (NCTRC). RT can be an essential part of a child's health care treatment. It is clear that it is effective by allowing the child to get back in touch with leisure activities that they loved regardless of why they are receiving services. Recreation Therapists (RTs) provide an array of services that include but are not limited to improving: social skills, increasing active involvement in activities, developing social networks and community living skills, improving pain management and range of motion, increasing rates of healing, and aiding in emotional recovery. Through providing these services they allow children to have a shorter stay in health care facilities and/or learn positive ways to spend leisure time and the benefits to being physically active. This project will illustrate to health care administrators the benefits of providing recreation therapy to the children receiving services through their organizations. It is the intention of this project to influence administrators of those organizations to develop and implement a recreation department and program within their organization. Based on the research this project will show the effects and benefits of providing recreation therapy to children receiving mental health services and children with developmental disabilities and chronic illnesses.
