Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As scientists toil in the fields of their disciplines, they rarely enjoy opportunities to step back from their work and evaluate where their efforts have taken them. Assessing a field's scientific progress, however, is critical if it is to have any hope of making meaningful advances. The time has come for a systematic self-examination of the state of the field of organizational behavior. Where has it been? Where is it now? And where is it going? The present book poses these questions to raise the self-consciousness of organizational scholars, causing them to question the field's values and its worth as a scientific and practical endeavor. Such a critical self-assessment of the state of organizational behavior is absolutely essential if the field is to prosper and make meaningful advances to behavioral science and to the welfare of individuals and society. This volume is a collection of essays by the field's most highly regarded scholars--experts who have contributed widely to the field, and who were invited to share their thoughts about its past, present, and future. By presenting their ideas about the state of organizational behavior, the discipline as a whole is invited to engage in critical self-reflection. No other book serves this function.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the issues and complexities of industrial services supply chain management. It analyzes how the transition from products to services can be managed, and how supply chains can be adjusted to reflect this new status quo. The book begins with chapters examining product-service systems structures and servitization – the services infusion process. Next, it presents industrial services as marketing and operations strategy. The focus shifts to service delivery, and this chapter discusses how the actual operations take place. This is followed by an examination of the role of technology and how connected assets are utilized by product vendors in value-creation. The book analyzes the transition from ownership to subscriptions in the pricing decisions chapter. Then the value chain effects chapter offers an overview of the mechanisms through which industrial companies are shortening the distance to end-users and aim for a better position in the value chain. Finally the conclusion addresses theoretical and empirical implications in the industrial services supply chain management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decades, the quest for a widely accepted definition of social enterprise has been a central issue in a great number of publications. The main objective of the ICSEM Project on which this book is based was to show that the social enterprise field would benefit much more from linking conceptualisation efforts to the huge diversity of social enterprises than from an additional and ambitious attempt at providing an encompassing definition. Starting from a hypothesis that could be termed "the impossibility of a unified definition", the ICSEM research strategy relied on bottom-up approaches to capture the social enterprise phenomenon in its local and national contexts. This strategy made it possible to take into account and give legitimacy to locally embedded approaches, while simultaneously allowing for the identification of major social enterprise models to delineate the field on common grounds at the international level. Social Enterprise in Western Europe –the third volume in a series of four ICSEM-based books on social enterprise worldwide – will serve as a key reference and resource for teachers, researchers, students, experts, policy makers, journalists and others who want to acquire a broad understanding of the social enterprise and social entrepreneurship phenomena as they emerge and develop in this region.

Book excerpt: This thesis deals with the concept of accountability in international nongovernmental organizations INGOs). The four chapters focus on the theoretical and practical implications of a comprehensive approach to INGO accountability. Comprehensive INGO accountability goes beyond the donor-centric focus on financial accountability, and further includes outcome assessment processes and stakeholder dialog. The findings suggest that INGOs that implement such processes yield more effective programs as well as a stronger mission orientation. This implies that accountability is not merely to be understood as a necessary evil that occurs separately from the organization's core operations. Instead, comprehensive INGO accountability is integrated in organizational processes, and has the strategic value of strengthening organizational performance and mission orientation. It is based on dialog, and therefore is constructive in nature and contributes to more democratic organizational decision-making. In light of the increasingly political role of INGOs, implementing comprehensive accountability can be expected to become indispensable to ensure their organizational legitimacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although participation and empowerment constitute prominent ideals in international development cooperation, most development interventions are still patronizing and conducted in a top-down manner. This book argues that one reason for the unsuccessful implementation of participation and empowerment relates to the cultures and internal structures of development organizations. A theoretical model explicates how organizational culture influences an organization's approach to participatory development. This model is applied to an ethnographic case-study of a South African development organization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Social Forum (WSF) was conceived as a platform for exchanging experiences and interlinking effective action. It has brought together people and social movements opposed to neoliberalism, imperialism and the domination of the world by capital. In this book, leading intellectual-activists from four continents take stock of the WSF-experience until the early 2020s and suggest new paths for collaboration between all who build other possible worlds. Since the first meeting in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in January 2001, at least hundreds of thousands of activists have contributed to WSF activities locally, regionally, and globally. In the early years of the WSF, high hopes were often associated with the pink wave in Latin America, the Arab Spring, and similar events elsewhere. Many foresaw the coming of a systemic crisis and some activist-intellectuals even predicted with some accuracy the outbreak of the financial crisis. But not many predicted the strengthening of authoritarian capitalism that followed. The focus of this edited volume is on the multiple practices of struggle, organization, and conceptual innovation expressed in the main WSF slogan since 2001: "Another world is possible." Most chapters in this book were originally published in the journal Globalizations.
