Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese made the world's first bronze chime-bells, which they used to perform ritual music, particularly during the Shang and Zhou dynasties (ca. 1700-221 B.C.). Lothar von Falkenhausen's rich and detailed study reconstructs how the music of these bells—the only Bronze Age instruments that can still be played—may have sounded and how it was conceptualized in theoretical terms. His analysis and discussion of the ritual, political, and technical aspects of this music provide a unique window into ancient Chinese culture. This is the first interdisciplinary perspective on recent archaeological finds that have transformed our understanding of ancient Chinese music. Of great significance to the understanding of Chinese culture in its crucial formative stage, it provides a fresh point of departure for exploring later Asian musical history and offers great possibilities for comparisons with music worldwide.

This book was released on with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present the easy-to-play songs in this songbook for beginners. You, your kids or students will have the opportunity to jump right into the music immediately. Music bells create an amazing sound and there is no need to worry about being in tune or finger position. It's a great instrument for beginners of any age. The unique advantage of bell sets is the fact that each note is created by an individual bell, so the notes that are not used in a particular song can be removed and the student has a greater chance for success. A handbell orchestra acts as one instrument, with each musician responsible for their particular notes, sounding their assigned bells whenever those notes appear in the music. Give each participant one or two bells and ask them to join in a simple melody. Independently, whether the player has musical knowledge or not, the band will sound harmoniously with just a little bit of training. Most solfeggio teachers advise that it's better to begin not with a piano, but with a simpler and more accessible instrument. However, like other "serious" musical instruments, bells can help in 1) teaching note duration, 2) understanding different pitches, 3) recognizing different musical scales, and 4) the acquisition of a sense of rhythm and melody. If you are a beginner, playing by note can be difficult. It is easier to follow color-coded circles with note letters. Just by following the color circles, you will sound like an experienced musician. All songs were written with circles in the musical staff, and there are no stems or flags - only notes on the line - to keep it simple. This book was written with beginners in mind. Important! Our color-coded scale corresponds to the chakra system. Each chakra is said to vibrate at a different frequency and is associated with a particular color and particular music note. The color of the bells or resonator blocks must be the same as the color of the bells below. C (Do) - red, D (Re) - orange, E (Mi) - yellow, F (Fa) - green, G (Sol) - light blue, A (La) - blue, B (Ti) - violet, C8 (Do) - white List of Songs A Hunting We Will Go A Sailor Went to Sea Amazing Grace Bim Bum Biddy Bobby Shafto Chumbara Cobbler, Mend My Shoe Cock-a-Doodle Doo Cotton Eyed Joe Ding Dong DiggiDiggiDong Doctor Foster Fiddle-Dee-Dee Five Little Monkeys Here Come a Blue Bird Here We Go Looby Loo Humpty Dumpty I Love Little Kitty Kookaburra Lavender’s Blue Li’l Liza Jane Little Jack Horner Long-legged Sailor Ninety-Nine Bottles Oh Susannah Old Blue Old Mother Hubbard One, Two, Three, Four Pat a Cake Peace Like a River Ring Around the Rosie Rub-a-Dub-Dub See-Saw Margery Daw The Bear Went Over the Mountain The Bee and the Pup The Big Sheep The Mulberry Bush Tinga Layo To Market, To Market Wishy Washy Wee. Book excerpt: The unexpected story of the creation of a holiday classic - in the most unlikely of places. It is November 1857 in Savannah, Georgia, and the heat is stifling. Choir director James Lord Pierpont is busy writing a song for the children of the church to perform to usher in the holiday season. He is also worried. Many townspeople are angry because the congregation does not believe in slavery, and someone has thrown a brick through one of the church windows. As Mr. Pierpont sweeps up the glass from the broken window, he recalls his own Boston childhood, and he suddenly gets an idea. A few days later - with singing children, jingling bells, and bags of "snow" - Mr. Pierpont introduces the delighted churchgoers to the charms of a northern Christmas In this terrific match of John Harris's entertaining text and Adam Gustavson's endearing illustrations, readers learn about the unexpected origins of a Christmas classic that was written during a Savannah heat wave. Harris's story also includes many interesting connections with Savannah, Unitarians, and freed slaves all playing a role in the story behind the song.

Book excerpt: The fascinating history of bell music The carillon, the world’s largest musical instrument, originated in the 16th century when inhabitants of the Low Countries started to produce music on bells in church and city towers. Today, carillon music still fills the soundscape of cities in Belgium and the Netherlands. Since the First World War, carillon music has become popular in the United States, where it adds a spiritual dimension to public parks and university campuses. Singing Bronze opens up the fascinating world of the carillon to the reader. It tells the great stories of European and American carillon history: the quest for the perfect musical bell, the fate of carillons in times of revolt and war, the role of patrons such as John D. Rockefeller Jr. and Herbert Hoover in the development of American carillon culture, and the battle between singing bronze and carillon electronics. Richly illustrated with original photographs and etchings, Singing Bronzetells how people developed, played, and enjoyed bell music. With this book, a fascinating history that is yet little known is made available for a wide public.

Book excerpt: "In detailing his recovery from the accident and his roundabout climb back onstage, Bell shines a light in those dark corners of the music business that, for the lone musician whose success is measured not by the Top 40 but by nightly victories, usually fall outside of the spotlight. Bell's prose is not unlike his lyrics: spare, beautiful, evocative, and often sneak-up-on-you funny. His chronicle of his own life and near death on the road reveals what it means to live for one's art."--BOOK JACKET.
